My View From Beyond the Gates: Birds Of A Hateful Feather

Birds Of A Hateful Feather: A Beyond the Gates commentary by Soap Central founder Dan J Kroll for the week ending October 2, 2026.

What do you get when you cross two attempted murderers, a carjacking, a pair of sibling crime lords, and a town full of people seeking revenge? No, it’s not the start of some really twisted riddle — it’s the past week on Beyond the Gates.

I don’t know what the breakdown was, but I’d bet that more than half of the Beyond the Gates audience suspected that Hayley would somehow end up with a “Get Out Of Jail Free” card. I don’t think that very many people knew how she’d get the card. If it’s any consolation, Hayley’s new bestie-in-wait also tried to kill someone — twice! — and she didn’t end up in jail either.

Then there’s the mobster formerly known as the Impaler. We already knew that robbery, blackmail, and murder were part of Heather Armstrong’s arsenal. Has she now added carjacking to her repertoire? I suppose even crime lords need to develop new talents.

With some much drama in the DMV, it’s kind of hard being… well, everyone. Will all the mayhem result in someone snapping and doing what Hayley and Leslie were unable to do?

If youโ€™ve been reading my column for any length of time, youโ€™ll know that I spent a good amount of time trying to figure out how Hayley would wiggle out of her legal predicament. And if you are a new reader or donโ€™t check in every week, hereโ€™s a link to the spot in last weekโ€™s column (โ€œA Full Circle Momentโ€) where I discuss it. Iโ€™m pleased to say that while none of the scenarios I conjured up hit the mark, I was right that Hayley wasnโ€™t going to see the inside of a jail cell. Others suggested that Hayley would end up pregnant and my leading theory was that Billโ€™s pride would have him pay Hayley to go away.

She Ain’t Ready — Or Maybe She Is

As it turns out, Hayley was a much better con than I think we all gave her credit for. She seemed sloppy and careless, especially when it came to the dosing of Billโ€™s food and drink. What we didnโ€™t see was Hayley being suspicious of the secret meetings Bill and Vernon kept having. She was so curious about what the two men were talking about that she planted recording devices everywhere.

Thanks to that, Hayley learned all about what happened โ€œthat nightโ€ on the dark, rural road. So, when Bill called Hayley every name but her own and explained how he planned to make sure she rotted in jail, a nonplused Hayley told Bill, โ€œThatโ€™s not how this ends.โ€ She told Bill that he was more than entitled to have her sent up the river. If he did, though, sheโ€™d take down the entire Dupree lineage with her.

I have to say, it was a brilliant bit of writing to have kept Hayleyโ€™s secret recordings a, well, a secret. The show easily could have tipped us off months and months ago. If they had, though, it would have radically altered the fallout from Hayleyโ€™s arrest. Weโ€™d have known that she had that information in her back pocket and that hospital confrontation would have been less juicy. The way it played out, when Bill learned what Hayley had on him, we were all learning it for the first time, too.

Easy, Breezy, Beautifulโ€ฆ Killer Girl

I do need to interject something here. How in the world did Hayley just waltz into Billโ€™s hospital room? Was no one alerted that Bill was nearly murdered? Were no guards stationed outside his door? Did no one in the hospital see the half-pint homicidal hussy walking through the corridors? Shanice doesnโ€™t miss anything on that floorโ€ฆ yet she didnโ€™t swarm to intercept the petite poisoner? I find that hard to believe.

I admit that I do feel a little bad for Bill, but maybe not in the way that youโ€™d think. Bill blew up his own life. I feel no sympathy for his side-piece-turned-wife breaking his heart. That said, I donโ€™t think anyone deserves to be murdered โ€“ even an adulterous, pompous ass. To watch Bill process everything in real time was really quite fascinating. He nearly lost his life because he couldnโ€™t keep his penis in his pants. And now heโ€™s poised to part with a million dollars and however much he spent on the house in St. Barts. All because Little Bill wanted to go spelunking.

The question is: Will Hayley really get to collect the reward for all her hard work? There are enough players involved in the coverup of โ€œthat nightโ€ that Hayley could easily be snuffed out like one of the torches on Survivor. If Randy is really Hayleyโ€™s only relative, heโ€™d be the only one who would know if Hayley went missing. The powerful people that are part of keeping the secret could very easily make it look like Hayley stiffed Randy and took off on her own.

Maybe death wonโ€™t become her because she could have sort of โ€œin the event of my deathโ€ arrangements with a lawyer that would result in her secret recordings being made public.

Death Doesnโ€™t Become Her

If Hayley isnโ€™t โ€œunalived,โ€ she will always loom large as a potential threat. I canโ€™t see Bill or the Duprees or even Joey being okay with that. Whatโ€™s to stop her from making more demands down the road? I also cannot imagine Bill being okay with the idea that Hayley would be free to run a con on another man (or woman, this is 2026.)

I know Bill is an expert lawyer will an astronomical hourly rate, but can he really legally prevent Hayley from remaining in or revisiting the DMV in the future? No matter what sort of hidden clauses he hides in the divorce papers, there really is no way to assure that Hayley wonโ€™t release her recordings even after Bill forks over the money.

Is there a way that the threat Hayley poses can be neutralized without actually โ€œneutralizingโ€ Hayley? I suppose someone could find her tapes and destroy them. Maybe Joey offers Randy a huge chunk of cash to turn on Hayley. Maybe Lynette isnโ€™t as dead as everyone thinks and she returns to somehow turn the tables on Hayley.

That brings me to another question: If Bill and the Duprees somehow get rid of the incriminating evidence that Hayley has, would Bill change his mind and agree to cooperate and send Hayley to prison? I canโ€™t imagine a broke, outwitted Hayley sticking around the DMV. There doesnโ€™t seem to be much story in that, aside from Hayley turning to Leslie and the two town outcasts teaming up. That could be comedy gold.

If she doesnโ€™t stay in the DMV, the pint-sized, penniless pariah could still make a beeline, as I previously suggested, to Genoa City to reunite with Kyle Abbott.

M Is For Murder, Mystery, and Mayhem

Rewinding a bit, though, it wasnโ€™t just Hayleyโ€™s future that Iโ€™ve been thinking about lately. Iโ€™ve also been pondering a whodunnit mystery with Heather being the one who gets knocked off. What if itโ€™s actually Hayley who gets clobbered with a candlestick in the billiard room? There are definitely enough suspects.

Everyone involved in covering up what happened โ€œthat nightโ€ in Virginia might be willing to take extreme measures to keep it a secret. That puts Bill, Elon, Joey, Marcel, Martin, Ted, and Vernon on the suspect list. Then you have to add in everyone that was told about what happened. Anita, Dani, Nicole, and Smitty would all need to be added.

If you count people that might be wanting revenge for what Hayley did to Bill, that would cover Caroline, Chelsea, Kat, and Naomi.

So far weโ€™re up to 15 possible suspects before we ever come up with the list of people who might have more vague reasons for wanting Hayley to pay. That could easily include Randy (because Hayley reneged on her promise to split her windfall 50/50), Samantha and Tyrell (if they were to learn that Hayley planned to hurt their Pops), and Tomas (to score points with Bill).

Screenshot this and tell your friends because I am going on record now as saying that Lynette Wise might be the one to do the dirty deed if Hayley is, in fact, offed. Why? Because we all believe her to be dead. Death is the perfect alibi for a crime. Lynette could sneak back into town, whack Hayley, and disappear into the night. Meanwhile, she could potentially frame someone else for Hayleyโ€™s death โ€“ and maybe even her own.

Overkill?

Attempted murder is nothing to laugh about, but there was a moment in the Hayley saga that really got me chuckling. When Leslie showed up unannounced at Hayleyโ€™s door for a little bit of bonding, Hayley wanted no part of it. Leslie didnโ€™t care. She was determined to become Hayleyโ€™s BFF. Annoyed, Hayley grumbled that she really wished she had another bottle of poison so she could take care of Leslie.

That irreverent humor was absolutely what was needed in that moment. I donโ€™t think Hayley meant it literally, but the way that the comment seemed to be directed to the audience was perfection.

Not-So-Sweet Caroline

My new favorite person is Caroline Lee. If you remember, back when Caroline found a collapsed Bill in the hallway at work, I questioned if there was more to her relationship with Bill than met the eye. I didnโ€™t believe then โ€“ and I donโ€™t believe now โ€“ that anything untoward took place. Does Caroline have some sort of mini-crush on the man that has taken such good care of her? Possibly, and I donโ€™t think thereโ€™s anything wrong with that.

This week, though, we learned way more about Caroline than we have in the past 19 months. While chatting with Naomi, Caroline claimed that she never really liked Hayley. Do I fully believe that? No. Do I believe that career-minded Caroline knew that if Bill liked someone, she needed to like that person, too? Absolutely.

When Hayley showed up a little while later, the Caroline we knew went off the rails. First, she warned Hayley to keep an eye on her drink because someone might poison it. Next, when Hayley said that she actually did like Caroline and suggested that they could keep their friendship on the DL, Caroline replied that sheโ€™d โ€œrather have a flock of vultures pick [her] eyes out.โ€ Then, for the piรจce de resistance, as Caroline left Uptown, she warned Hayley to watch her back.

Where has this Caroline been?! It was unexpected, funny, and totally cheerable. It also made me want to see more of Ellie Wang (Caroline) as the story unfolds.

But It Worked on the Wicked Witch of the West

The Orphey Geneโ€™s spat between Chelsea and Hayley was probably the first real โ€œcatfightโ€ in Beyond the Gates history. It was also one of onlyโ€ฆ. three?… slaps in Beyond the Gates history. If I am remembering correctly, the previous slaps heard โ€˜round the DMV were Dani slapping Hayley at the end of the first episode in the series, and Anita whopping Leslie in the foyer of the Dupree home. Along the way weโ€™ve had Nicole strangle Leslie and Chelsea biting looney Alison.

I was a little tickled that Chelsea thought she could beat Hayley in a one-on-one. Yes, the adrenaline was pumping, but that only goes so far. Hayley is allegedly from Philadelphia and my Philadelphia ladies know how to scrap. You heard Randy say that Hayley was known to keep a razor blade tucked inside her mouth. I donโ€™t think that type of warfare would reside even in the deepest recesses of Chelseaโ€™s mind. But it was cute that she thought she could get the upper hand.

Keeping It Classy

Not every fight needs to be physical. A perfect example is Anita showing up at Leslieโ€™s hotel room after finding out that Leslie had bailed Hayley out of jail. There were no slaps, thrown water, or even any raised voices. It wasnโ€™t even fully confrontational. Yes, Anita did let it be known that she did not approve of what Leslie done. But then she hit her with a much more subtle knockout punch: she heavily implied that Barbara would not have approved of Leslieโ€™s actions either.

Not that Leslie needs another person to squabble with, but I definitely enjoyed seeing her give Anastasia a hard time. I am thinking of putting together a villain chart and ranking all of the Beyond the Gates characters from most loved to least loved. Itโ€™s gonna be hard to figure out the lower end of the chart.

I do think Leslie earned some points when she referred to Anastasia as โ€œAnast-nausea.โ€

In one of the clunkiest story twists in recent months, Vanessa was carjacked โ€“ off-screen. Iโ€™m not advocating for violence on television, but there was absolutely no drama involved in whatever happened to Vanessa. We didnโ€™t see her get into car. There was no menacing figure lurking nearby. There were no police or ambulance sirens. It didnโ€™t need to be an entire action sequence, but a few seconds of peril would have gone a long way.

Instead, we got one of Joeyโ€™s goons starting to make the reveal and then a scene switch to Andre sharing that Vanessa was in the emergency room because sheโ€™d been the victim of a carjacking. I like Vanessa and was concerned about her welfare, but there was little time to feel worried. Seconds after Andre broke the news, Vanessa was moved out of the emergency room because she wasnโ€™t emergent.

This Has Heather’s Fingerprints All Over It

I didnโ€™t even bother to do a social media poll about the attack on Vanessa because I knew that nearly everyone would agree that Heather was behind it. But why? Because Vanessa didnโ€™ t want to have brunch with her? That seems a bit excessive, but then again, Heather doesnโ€™t seem to be the most measured person.

What I struggle with is how being carjacked will make Vanessa want to start spending more time with Heather. There doesnโ€™t seem to be a correlation. Maybe the staged carjacking wasnโ€™t about Vanessa at all. Perhaps it was Heather sending a message to Joey. Again, though, I donโ€™t understand the goal. Will Joey suddenly be fearful of what Heather can doโ€ฆ and back off from telling Vanessa to stay away from Heather? That seems a little nuts.

I do like that instead of hiding away in fear, Vanessa has become determined to find out who ordered the carjacking. She opened up her laptop and started googling “Lachlaw Holdings, LTD.” The “LTD” part is a big clue because that means it’s not a U.S.-based company. It’s not exactly a smoking gun that will point to Heather, but it is something that will eventually make a connection.

There was a really, really powerful moment that took place in the midst of all of this strangeness. When Joey was ordering his minions to fan out to find Vanessa (and Heather), he was asked who should be looking. โ€œEVERYONE!โ€ Joey yelled. It was a single word, but the delivery was chilling. It showed yet again why Jon Lindstrom (Joey Armstrong) is such an important part of the Beyond the Gates canvas.

Here are some of the thoughts and observations about other things happening on Beyond the Gates.

Do As I Say

It was a little ironic that Andre scolded Dani for putting herself in danger by confronting Hayley. You know, considering that he hasn’t told his wife that her new BFF is a murderess.

Also, I know Bill is back to full health, but I winced when he started drinking that whiskey in his office. Do we know if the liquor was replaced with fresh liquor? I’d hate for some of Hayley’s bosom poison to still be floating around.

Dovetails

There may be concerns about the pacing of Beyond the Gates’ stories, but there is one thing that I think we can all agree on. The show has done a really, really good job of weaving together its stories. We all suspected “that night” would come back into play, but I don’t know back then that we expected it to be in the Haley’s a con story.

And everyone was annoyed when Andre claimed that he was “camera shy” for not wanting to be in the Forrester campaign. Nothing more was said… until Heather showed up.

A Different World

It would have been fun if someone had mentioned that the quarterback of the team opposing Banneker University “used to be a photographer.”

In a parallel world, Cornell Young IV plays Shaquille Johnson, the quarterback of the fictional Hillman College on the Netflix reboot of A Different World. Young played a photographer at Bill and Hayley’s almost-wedding.

BTG: Behind the Graphic

If you are wondering what the header art for this week’s column is all about, you don’t need to resort to blackmail to get answers. The Banneker pennant is showing a little school spirit for Homecoming. The mimosa is what Hayley was drinking when she was confronted by Caroline. The vulture also figured into that same scene when Caroline said she’d rather have a flock of vultures peck her eyes out than to ever be friends with Hayley. The decanter of whiskey is what Bill chugged down in his office. And Randy talked about things not being sunshine and kittens.

The Beyond the Gates writing team seems to be having a little too much fun. Here are some of the lines of dialogue that tickled my funny bone or that I found memorable over the past week (and haven’t already mentioned in this column).

โ€œMaybe youโ€™ll get out before crowโ€™s feet settle in and your bones turn too brittle.โ€
Bill, to Hayley, as he relished the idea of sending her to jail.

โ€œSometimes the good Lord needs a little help.โ€
Chelsea, in trying to explain why she started a fight with Hayley.

โ€œ[You’re] Taking 100 steps back for every one step forward.โ€
Anita, sharing her disappointment that Leslie had bailed out Hayley.

โ€œThereโ€™s a differences between the way things work and the way you work things.โ€
Bill, trying to explain why he was going to get the charges against Hayley dropped.
