My View From Beyond the Gates: A Full Circle Moment

Dani Dupree kicked off Beyond the Gates with a shotgun wedding and her life nearly ended because of a blast from the past. It truly was a A Full Circle Moment. A Beyond the Gates commentary by Soap Central founder Dan J Kroll for the week ending September 25, 2026.

Who doesn’t love a full circle moment, when everything loops back around and neatly wraps up with a little bow? I suppose when you are staring down the barrel of a handgun… maybe there are other shapes that you’re hoping for.

One of the constant ridicules that soap operas get from nonviewers (and even some viewers) is that stories never really end. They, like the Energizer bunny, just keep going and going and… well, you get the idea. Every now and again, though, the writers can surprise us in ways that we were not expecting. The challenge, though, is determining how long viewers will wait for things to wrap up.

Raise your hand if youโ€™ve ever grumbled, groused, or otherwise complained that the poisoning storyline on Beyond the Gates was dragging on for too long. You can put your hand down because I canโ€™t see you. This isnโ€™t Facetime!

I know that Iโ€™ve annoyed at least a few people over the past several months with my insistence that we all just needed to ride it out and trust that the writers had a plan in place. Iโ€™m not going to do the โ€œI told ya soโ€ routine because I donโ€™t think that it accomplishes anything. Instead, I want to take a moment to explain why I was so committed to being patient.

Beyond the Gates is still relatively new. The show doesnโ€™t have the depth of history, the years of characters and backstories that other soaps do. Because of that, the show also doesnโ€™t have any sort of track record for handling this type of long story and I wanted to allow myself to be patient to see how theyโ€™d handle it. Until now, the most long-term stories weโ€™ve been given are the dissolution of Dani and Billโ€™s marriage and Ted fathering Eva โ€“ and both of those stories happened off-screen. There is only 19 months of material that weโ€™ve seen with our own eyes.

Rather than dictating how fast I wanted the poisoning story to go, I decided early on to go for the ride and see how things played out. I figured it was a great opportunity to understand how the writers and executivesโ€™ minds work and what their visions are. It would also serve as a good measuring stick to gauge how all future stories might play out.

Wait For It…

The poisoning story absolutely could have ended months ago. Hayley could have been found out the first time she dosed Billโ€™s special tea. But whereโ€™s the fun in that? Along the way there have been close calls, people nearly drinking or eating poisoned items intended for Bill, accusations of an affair, an actual affair, and the discovery that Hayley has told some other fibs.  And letโ€™s not forget the hilarity of seeing Hayley prematurely celebrate Billโ€™s demise only to have to end up playing the doting wife by Billโ€™s bedside.

For me, the payoff this week was absolutely perfect. On TwitterX, I called the Wednesday, September 23, episode โ€œone of the soapiest episodes of the entire series.โ€ It had all of the elements of good, classic soap: someone breaking into a home and hiding, a villain unexpectedly pulling a gun, the heroine making a sassy joke while staring down the barrel of a gun, the police storming in at just the right time, the villain getting caught trying to destroy evidence, a completely unbelievable police interrogation, the husband of the heroine reaching out to the townโ€™s bad guy for help, a secret sex tape-slash-murder video, the ex-husband of the heroine in the hospital realizing how his life would have been different if he hadnโ€™t cheated, and actual cliffhangers.

Hayley also turned into the archetype soap, Scooby Doo, and James Bond villain. After months and months of keeping her mission a secret, she finally decided to confess everything while holding Dani at gunpoint. All the while, she reverted from sweet Southern Belle to thuggish ruggish bone from North Philly. I also loved that Hayley made a point of calling it a โ€œfull circle moment.โ€ Way back in the opening days of Beyond the Gates it was Dani who held Hayley at gunpoint. Proving that she is the ultimate winner, Dani even got to fire her gun before the police showed up. Dani 2, Hayley 0.

Even Leslie got a win. Having her in the police station munching on a doughnut while Hayley was arrested was one of the funniest moments in the history of soap opera. Love her or hate her, that moment was made all the better by LSDโ€™s antics.

It was a good solid hour (40ish minutes, in reality) of soap. Did everything make sense? No. Did it have to? No, this is a soap opera. Half the โ€œrealโ€ crime dramas they show on cable and streaming services donโ€™t make sense โ€“ and they are real life.

Murder, Kroll Wrote

If you read last weekโ€™s column (โ€œWhatโ€™s In Your Search History?โ€), you got to see first hand some of the things that Iโ€™ve googled over the years to help research soap opera storylines. One, which probably has me on a list, was what type of poison doesnโ€™t show up on a standard blood test. Back in July in a column called โ€œWhiplash and Dรฉjร  Vuโ€, I even waxed nostalgic about it.

If I remember correctly, old murder mysteries often used antifreeze as a poison. The claim was that it could be used in small doses over time and it wouldnโ€™t show up on blood tests or toxicology reports. Maybe too many people tried that and they added antifreeze components to blood tests to put the kibosh on murder by Valvoline.

Imagine my surprise and elation when the contents of Hayleyโ€™s vial turned out to be ethylene glycol. What is ethylene glycol? Itโ€™s an odorless, colorless liquid with a sweet taste that is toxic in high concentrations. Oh, and it just so happens to be one of the key ingredients in antifreeze!

Take a memo, Kat. That is how you solve a crime. And I donโ€™t even listen to true crime podcasts. Why? Because I think too many people watch them or listen to them to find out how not to get caught committing crimes. Iโ€™d like to take a moment to thank Jessica Fletcher for helping me to solve this crime.

Not So Fast

I donโ€™t want to get too cocky because even after the end of the Thursday, September 24, episode of Beyond the Gates, I was still convinced that something was up. It all seemed too easy. I was waiting for Bill to wake up on the floor and have revealed the previous two episodes to all be a dream or vision while he was having one of his seizures. Or maybe it was Hayley worrying about how her plan was not going according to plan.

Even before that, I was sure that Hayleyโ€™s mysterious vial would have something other than poison in it. When the result came back and I found out I was wrong, I was then 100% sure that Billโ€™s blood work would all come back clean. Obviously, I wasnโ€™t right about that either.  But it doesnโ€™t matter because I knew Hayley was having Bill slurp down on some antifreeze.

Now I am trying to figure out how she gets out of her legal woes. Does Hayley know a corrupt judge who will dismiss the charges against her? She had a crooked doctor in her pocket. Perhaps the search was unlawful and — hereโ€™s some irony — everything found will be the fruit of the poisonous tree. Or maybe everything will get knocked down because Jacob handled the detaining and questioning of his wife, mother-in-law, and step-mother-in-law. Or maybe Hayley will claim that her fake doctor told her the vial contained an herbal supplement that would heal Bill faster.

A Galaxy of Stars

In a week of strong performances, I want to take a moment to make sure that Timon Kyle Durrett gets a little love. Bill Hamilton might have been duped by a hot young thing, but Durrettโ€™s performance had me feeling bad for Big Bad Bill. While everything was going down at his house, Bill had a really candid and sweet conversation in his hospital room with Chelsea. I didnโ€™t expect the conversation to go that way. I thought heโ€™d flip out that Chelsea had found him and get himself so worked up that heโ€™d flatline again.

Instead, Chelsea took time to listen to her dad. When she heard Bill blame his health troubles for potentially making Hayley stray, Chelsea assured him that was not the case.

When Jacob showed up with a warrant demanding a blood sample, Bill raged about the illegal nature of how everything went down. He refused to believe that Hayley would try to kill him. Or maybe more accurately, he refused to allow himself to believe that Hayley would try to kill him. It wasnโ€™t until Dani showed up and the test results came back on Hayleyโ€™s boobie prize that Bill realized that heโ€™d been duped. In that instance, you could feel Billโ€™s regret. Heโ€™d blown up his marriage to Dani and the life heโ€™d had because he fell in love with Hayley and believed that sheโ€™d felt the same way.

Itโ€™s very clear why Durrett earned a Daytime Emmy nomination this year. Itโ€™s also clear that he will deserve another when next yearโ€™s nominations roll around.

I think Billโ€™s pride will be the reason that Hayley doesnโ€™t see the inside of a jail cell. Rather than see his name and likeness all over social media and news programs at the high-powered lawyer who was conned and nearly killed, I can see Bill refusing to cooperate in the investigation and letting Hayley run off to St. Barts with orders to never return again. His family will be furious, but it feels weirdly in character to me.

It also leaves open the possibility for Hayley to return in, oh, nine months or so with a little Hamil-ette.

To Spoil Or Not To Spoil

One of the joys I have found in my post-Soap Central life is that I can now watch the soaps for fun. I no longer have to know whatโ€™s coming up, whoโ€™s leaving a show, or anything else. I can sit back in the library, flip on the television, and watch the soapiness unfold. It has made things so much more enjoyable. Itโ€™s that โ€œdetachedโ€ viewing that has me not having any idea if Marquita Goings (Hayley Hamilton) is leaving the show. I know people love their spoilers, but if there had been an announcement that Goings would air for the final time on September whatever, the โ€œconclusionโ€ of the poisoning storyline would have been telegraphed and less entertaining.

Speaking of things that people have โ€œtelegraphedโ€ or at least thought that they have, thereโ€™s the seeming inevitability that Bill and Dani will get back together. In a response to one of my tweets this week, Emily Stern asked, โ€œAm I the only one who wants to see Bill and Dani together? I mean, they have to earn it, but Dani and Andre are a snooze.โ€ I donโ€™t think that Emily is the only one, but I still need some convincing.

Iโ€™ve said in previous columns that I wish Beyond the Gates had started a year or two earlier so that we could have seen what Bill and Dani were like as (mostly) happily marrieds. I think the pair has amazing chemistry, but I also think that too much nastiness has transpired to wish them back together. Would I wish for one of my real-life friends to get back together with the man whoโ€™d habitually cheated on them and bad-mouthed them all over town? I wouldnโ€™t. So why would I wish that upon Dani? Maybe because sheโ€™s fictional and messiness is fun to watch?

The thing that struck me this past week was that while Andre was chatting it up with Joey because he loves Dani and is worried about her safety, Dani was breaking into houses and cracking safes because she still loves her ex-husband.

I usually donโ€™t jump into other peopleโ€™s discussions on social media, but Brian H. Waters posted something that made me reconsider my policy. He said, โ€œStop lying to yourself Dani, you don’t love Andre!โ€ I didnโ€™t agree with this. I believe that Dani loves Andre. I just donโ€™t think it is the same type of love that she feels for her first true love and the father of her children.

If you are keeping track of such things at home, there are now two different sets of videos that have been teased but not shown to audiences.

This week, Andre called a back-alley meeting with Joey Armstrong. There, Andre revealed that heโ€™d had โ€œhung outโ€ and โ€œhad some good timesโ€ with Heather a few years earlier. Interestingly enough, Joey thought that Andre might be trying to con him at Heatherโ€™s behest. Unsure how to make Joey believe him, Andre whipped out his cell phone and pulled up something heโ€™d recorded during his time in Europe.

While we didnโ€™t see the video that Andre showed Joey, there were enough hints to be able to make an educated guess about its contents. The video appeared to have started off with Heather and an unknown person having sex. Andre urged Joey to keep watching because the big moment was coming. That reads far dirtier than it was in my head. Andre looked away in horror as Joeyโ€™s face became much more somber.

Roll Camera Two

The other mystery video is nearly a year old now. Itโ€™s the video that Joey showed Leslie at the casino to keep her in line. Again, the videoโ€™s contents remain a mystery to this day. Talk about keeping a secret. Will that video ever come back into play?

I am thinking that it might now that Leslie โ€“ yes, LSD โ€“ has bailed Hayley out of jail. If Joey doesnโ€™t like that Leslie is helping the woman who tried to kill Bill, he might just decide to roll that beautiful bean footage.

Here are some of the thoughts and observations about other things happening on Beyond the Gates.

Preferred Pronouns

It’s funny to me that everyone keeps referring to the Impaler with male pronouns. To be fair, we probably would be, too, if we hadnโ€™t already learned โ€œhisโ€ identity. Even Nicoleโ€™s professional analysis didnโ€™t even leave open the possibility that the big bad baddie could be a beautiful babe bitches be jealous of.

Doing Their Jobs

For the second week in a row, Tomas actually did something right. The minute he learned that Hayley had tried to kill Bill, he wisely dropped out of representing her. Obviously, it would have made no sense to defend the woman who tried to kill his employer, but let’s be honest… we’re talking about Tomas.

Detective Marcel Malone also deserves a round of applause. He has some questionable methods, but if it weren’t for his keen eye, Hayley might have been able to dispose of her bosom poison.

The Beyond the Gates writing team seems to be having a little too much fun. Here are some of the lines of dialogue that tickled my funny bone or that I found memorable over the past week (and haven’t already mentioned in this column).

โ€œA snake doesnโ€™t become a snake because it didnโ€™t get enough warmth. It was always a snake.โ€
Chelsea telling Bill that nothing he did made Hayley the way she is.

โ€œA reasonable person does things because theyโ€™re right. I do things because they make sense.โ€
Joey explaining how he operates to Andre.

โ€œWhoever told you that women like the strong silent type lied.โ€
Vanessa to Randy when he declined to tell her what he knew about Heather.

โ€œRolling in there with her crocodile tears and her cleavage.โ€
Dani was certain Hayley would get to Bill first and convince him that she was sweet and innocent.

โ€œEvery second I spend listening to Hayley’s pathetic lies I lose an IQ point.โ€
Bill after Hayley tired to convince him that Dani was really the one poisoning him.

โ€œI support women’s rights and women’s wrongs.โ€
Leslie explaining why she had to bail Hayley out of jail.

โ€œWell done.โ€
This wasn’t a quote from the show — it’s from me. The dialogue as a whole this week was sharp. Even the things that were not funny enough to make it into this section were still on point. This was an amazing week for the cast, writers, and crew of Beyond the Gates.

Wonderful column and congrats on the glycol call.
Leslie eating the donut needs to be included in the show’s emmy reel for 2027.
This week of shows was so good that Spouse sat down to watch with me on Friday after listening to me laugh for two days straight.

I was not expecting the poisoning storyline to wrap up this week. I’m so glad that it did. This was probably the first week in a while that I’ve been dying to see the next episode each time. Not only has it been revealed that Haley has been poisoning Bill, but we also couldn’t get a drag out of him refusing to believe it at first.

I’m curious as to what Haley is approaching Bill about in Friday’s episode that she’s convinced will save her from this mess. I’ve always suspected that when Bill has had his private meetings with Vernon or Joey and has asked Haley to leave the room, she stood nearby listening in. There’s a good chance that she might know about some of Bill’s shady dealings, including the Martin cover up.
