My View From Beyond the Gates: Baby, I’m So Happy For You

Baby, I’m So Happy For You: A Beyond the Gates commentary by Soap Central founder Dan J Kroll for the week ending April 17, 2026.

It was week of wall-to-wall good news. CBS announced that Beyond the Gates was picked up for another two years, Anita Dupree learned that her tumor had shrunk, Kat and Eva temporarily buried the hatchet over some birthday cake, Nicole mostly patched things up with BFF Vanessa and had a moment of nostalgia with Ted, and Bill and Dani continued to thrive as sort of friends.

Yes, it was a great week for everyone and I could not be happier. Well, it was a good week for everyone except for Lynette Wise.

I am going to do something a little different this week. Instead of focusing first on the key storylines of the week, I want to take a few moments to discuss the episode of Beyond the Gates that aired on Wednesday, April 15, 2026. It’s an example of the what the show does so well. It takes moments that have been building for weeks and months, tosses them into one of those plastic Shake-n-Bake bags, jiggles things around, and then watches as magic happens. This is why instant gratification is never as good as anticipation.

In the span of twoish segments of show, Beyond the Gates touched on several of its long-running questions: Are Bill and Dani getting back together? Will Nicole and Ted be able to repair their marriage? Can Eva and Kat ever get along? The answers are apparently no, maybe, and yes.

My ears perked up when Bill ended his phone call with Dani by saying, “Baby, I’m so happy for you.” What made it even messier was that Bill wasn’t alone when he said it. New wife Hayley was by his side, Bill’s daughter was across the table from him, and town pariah Leslie Thomas was at a nearby table. And then there was me on the other side of the television reaching for my remote so I could TiVo it back to make sure I heard Bill correctly.

Sister, Sister

Later, Eva happened upon “Kat Day,” the internationally observed holiday to commemorate the birth of one Katherine Richardson. Things were fraught as Kat accused her half-sister of crashing her birthday party for the second straight year. That’s become par for the course when the two women are in the same room together. After Eva broke the news (or ruined the surprise) that Anita was responding positively to her chemotherapy treatments, Kat stunned the entire gathering by inviting Eva to join the birthday celebration. It was a remarkable moment. I rewatched the scene a few times just to take everything in.

Give the Woman Her Flowers

Later, Ted showed up Dani’s house with flowers for Nicole. It was keeping with the tradition he had of giving flowers to Nicole on Kat’s birthday as a way of thanking her for their daughter. “I will never stop being grateful for the gift you gave me on this day many years ago,” Ted said softly with a smile. This may have been the most thoughtful and sincere thing Ted has done since we first met him. It even had me jumping on the bandwagon with folks who would like to see these two get back together. I can’t help but think if this version of Ted showed up months ago, he and Nicole might have been able to work through their issues and remain married.

An Isolated Instance or a Hint of Things to Come?

It’s unclear what the writers are really planning for Bill and Dani. All of this will-they-or-won’t-they teasing is actually fun from a viewership perspective. I don’t want to see them reunite, but I do love watching Karla Mosley and Timon Kyle Durrett in scenes together. They have amazing chemistry whether it involves Dani ridiculing Bill’s child bride or the two bonding over family heartbreak.

I’ve said for months that I’d like to see Kat and Eva get to a place where they can exist in the same room without taking shots at each other. I caught a lot of heat for that, since it seems like I am the only person in the known universe that likes both Kat and Eva. I know this for a fact because part of the mission of that recent around-the-moon trip was to have the astronauts search for others who like both characters.

Ted and Nicole getting back together is the most likely of the three things to actually happen. I didn’t always want that to be the case because Ted was really, really hard to like in the days and weeks that followed the anniversary party. Now, though, we’ve seen glimpses of what Nicole must have liked in the man. Poor Shanice might have yet another rebound relationship end badly.

It looks like the Lynette Wise story has come to a close. Oh, Lynette. We hardly knew ye.

I will make a confession – and since this is a safe space, I feel like I can do that – but it never occurred to me that the best way to deal with the threat that Lynette posed was to kill her. I don’t mean to sound nonchalant about something so… final.  I spent the last few columns wondering if Lynette would expose Hayley or if Hayley would find a way to turn the tables on her former partner in con. And the answer was there all the time: Randy.

It looks like Lynette helped raise Randy’s body count in two different ways. We got a little love in the afternoon between the two… and then Randy added another hash mark to his murder tally.

Side note: There have been a lot of murders on Beyond the Gates. We’ve been so busy praising the actors and creatives that we somehow missed this murdapalooza that’s been taking place right underneath our noses. Let’s see… there was KKKenneth, KKKenneth’s brother, Doug McBride, and now Lynette Wise.

Here’s another confession – more of a musing, perhaps. When Randy met with Lynette and pretended that he was turning on Hayley, I wondered to myself, “Could Randy really flip?” I can’t be the only one that questioned if one schemer would turn on another, regardless of any blood bond that they might have.

I’m from the “no body, no death” era of soap opera, so in my mind there is still a chance that Lynette is somewhere out there leading yet another con. If that is the case, I look forward to seeing the lovely and talented Dominique Madison again someday soon.

Smitty has become careless. Scratch that. Smitty has become reckless. His desire to blow the lid off of the “red market” blood theft ring has him making mistakes, careless mistakes that could get him killed. His off-script actions already put Jacob in harm’s way.

We know that Nicole knows that Smitty was the person who accessed her office computer without authorization. She just hasn’t come out and said it. First, she dropped by the townhouse to ask Smitty why he’d dropped by the hospital. A couple of episodes later, Nicole was pressing Martin for details about what his husband was up to.

In all my years of writing, I’ve never worked on a dangerous undercover story. I can’t say for certain how people should carry on in that sort of situation. I have to imagine that breaking into your mother-in-law’s computer, disregarding your work partner’s orders, and being overly cocky are not approved techniques to getting the job done.

Blood Will Be Shed — and Stolen

If you’re a regular reader of my column, you know that I’ve been worried that someone in this “red market” story might get killed. Jacob has always been at the top of my “worried about” list, but now that he’s been beaten up by Ren… I think Smitty surges ahead on the list. He’s gone rogue and he made a point of turning down Martin’s security detail. That just spells trouble in my book.

Do I think he’s going to end up sharing a cloud with Lynette Wise? No, but I can definitely see him getting seriously injured.

Meanwhile, the whole thing has just fallen apart. Jacob is still having secret sex romps with his wife. We still don’t know for sure if we can trust Marcel Malone. (Drac)Lia is now making veiled threats to Ashley. I’m pretty sure this mission should have been aborted weeks ago, but… it still keeps limping down the road. And I am certain someone else will get hurt before this thing is over.

Congratulations to the cast and crew of Beyond the Gates on their recent two-year renewal. Until the time of the announcement, Beyond the Gates was the only scripted series on CBS waiting for word of its fate. A lot of fans worried that no news was bad news.

I had been told by sources that CBS was (and is) very happy with Beyond the Gates and had no intention of ending it. The show’s ratings have been solid – they’ve been running higher this year than last and they are higher than what The Talk was doing when it occupied the timeslot. Plus, Beyond the Gates does well with streamers on Paramount+.

Keep in mind, there is really no date that soap opera renewals are announced. In fact, ABC has never made any such announcement. CBS handles its soaps a bit differently because they are not owned outright by CBS. There are other production companies – like Procter & Gamble and the NAACP, in the case of Beyond the Gates – that need to be involved in all decision-making processes.

Timing Is Everything

News of Beyond the Gates’ renewal came just a day after the 15th anniversary of ABC announcing that it was pulling the plug on the long-running soaps All My Children and One Life to Live. In the two years prior, CBS axed As the World Turns and Guiding Light. There was also word that ABC wanted to drop General Hospital and NBC had also been rumored to want to jettison Days of our Lives.

For more than a decade, the daytime landscape consisted of just four soaps. The last time a new soap was launched was waaaaaaay back in the late-1900s. Okay, Passions in 1999. We had been told by network executives that soaps were a dying breed. In fact, even Oprah Winfrey weighed in by saying that “for all intent and purpose” soap opera’s time had come and gone.

Beyond the Gates making it to television was a miracle in and of itself. Its renewal is a testament to the hard work of the show’s cast and crew, the network’s commitment to providing scripted television, and to the passion that fans still have for soapy drama.

Here are some of the thoughts and observations about other things happening on Beyond the Gates.

Head Games

In last week’s column I commented that nothing happens on a soap without reason. That has me more than a little worried about Vernon mixing up the names of Sharon and Tracy. It even caught Dani’s attention. Mix-ups happen in real life, but on soaps… it’s usually a sign of bad things to come. Sorry, Dr. Montgomery, telling me (and Vernon) to “not jump to the worse case scenario” is not going to prevent me from doing exactly that. Here’s hoping that Vernon’s memory issues really are stress related.

The Duprees and Their Toes

Also in last week’s column I talked about how cringeworthy it was (at least to me) that Martin was asking grandfather Vernon for sex advice. I even called the section “Grandpa’s Pipe Game” because it made me hilariously uncomfortable. And, if you recall, I labeled myself a hypocrite for being amused by Anita talking to Dani about her “toe curling” sex life.

Well, folks, this week we got funny and cringe sex talk all in one sitting. This time around it was Chelsea teasing Naomi about their mother’s bedroom activities. Chelsea seems okay with the idea of her mom getting’ it on. Naomi? Not so much. It was a really fun, off-the-cuff discussion between two sisters that felt very relatable to me.

Naomi’s unease was on full display later when she sorta kinda blabbed that her mother was having an affair with Bill – in earshot of Andre. Andre let her squirm for a bit before telling her that he was just messing with her. The squirming resumed when Naomi left the room for only a few moments and returned to find her mother sitting in her stepdad’s lap.

Are We Outta the Woods?

Anita finally got some good news this week: her tumor is responding to treatment. Fans were ecstatic and immediately started looking ahead to Anita’s next non-cancer storyline.

While I, too, welcomed to news, I seem to be the only one who wasn’t convinced that Anita would recover. I looked at the facts about Anita’s rare, aggressive form of cancer and the numbers weren’t so great. Still, I wasn’t sure if Beyond the Gates would go there and see the Dupree matriarch succumb to the disease. Or maybe they would as part of an intentional path to show that this show is different.

Beyond the Gates is still a soap, so it doesn’t “have” to follow all the rules of reality. But it also isn’t the type of soap that verges on science fiction. For example, I don’t think we’ll ever be seeing Beyond the Gates reveal that Anita didn’t really have cancer in the first place because she was an unknown twin swapped into place to protect the real Anita Williams Dupree from a harmful biotoxin that a rival girl group planned to use on her to prevent the new Articulettes’ album from being released.

Comings and Goings

There have been some changes to the Beyond the Gates roster. Alex Alegria (Tomas Navarro) has been dropped to recurring status. The actor is an original cast member and had been on contract since the show debuted in February 2025. Jon Lindstrom (Joey Armstrong) has been upgraded to contract status. He had been recurring since the show premiered. Newcomer Lami (formerly David Lami Friebe, who plays Izaiah Hawthorne) has also been upped to contract status. Lami first appearance in October 2025.

Accordingly, Lami and Lindstrom now appear in the show’s opening credits, while Alegria has been removed.

Meanwhile, multi-soap vet Ashley Jones has joined the cast of Beyond the Gates in a yet-to-be-disclosed role. Eagle-eyed fans spotted Jones in photos from the show’s renewal party. Pressed for details, a Beyond the Gates’ spokesperson confirmed Jones’ addition, but would not say who she’d be playing or when she’d make her first on-screen appearance.

Jones is best-known for a six-year run as Bridget Forrester on The Bold and the Beautiful. She also appeared as Megan Dennison on The Young and the Restless and Parker Forsyth on General Hospital.

An actor by the name of Darrex Brady recently posted video of his dressing room at the Beyond the Gates studio. (It’s room 220, if you keep track of such things.) He will be playing a character by the name of “Jaylen.” That’s all the information I have at the moment – no last name, no first air date.

As the Soaps Turn

I love that Beyond the Gates isn’t afraid to acknowledge the world around us – both real and soapy. You can always count on BTG writer Jamey Giddens to sprinkle into the show as many soap references as possible.

When Hayley was waxing nostalgic about her childhood, she talked about window shopping at the Fenmore department stores and aspiring to one day own a dress from Barbara Ryan Originals. That was a cute nod to the famous clothing line on As the World Turns. There was also a mention of The Bold and the Beautiful’s Spectra Fashions designs.

Over Before It Started?

Are we beginning to see signs of the demise of Madison and Chelsea? Chelsea and Madison are still very much in love, but it was a little weird to see Chelsea comment about how her relationship with Madison could tank future ChelseaKat deals. I’m sure this was more of an indictment of Madison’s mom, Willow, but it’s never good when you talk about all the bad things that your relationship might cause.

BTG: Behind the Graphic

In case you are wondering what this week’s header image is all about, I am here with the explanation. The tiara represents “Kat Day” and the gold balloons are a nod to the balloons Vernon gave to Anita to celebrate nearing the end of her chemotherapy. King Tut was mentioned by Dani, see the Lines of the Week section below. The photo? That’s a picture of Colleen Zenk, who played Barbara Ryan on As the World Turns. Since her clothing line was mentioned, I thought she needed a little shout-out in the column.

Quick Takes

Has anyone else memorized the phone numbers of all the unsaved contacts on Jacob’s burner phone? I did because I want to know who is sending him messages.

Didn’t Martin say that he had given up on running for the Senate? I am 100% convinced that “the truth about that night” is going to come out during the big crossover event with the Young and the Restless.

Nicole being cold — arctic, even! — when Hayley tried to butter her up with compliments was everything I needed.

I liked seeing the origin story of Ninessa… Vancole… er, Nicole and Vanessa’s friendship.

Randy and Hayley had so many close calls this week. They were nearly spotted together on at least two different occasions. I was certain that their connection was going to be exposed, but… I was fooled and fooled again.

The Beyond the Gates writing team seems to be having a little too much fun. Here are some of the lines of dialogue that tickled my funny bone or that I found memorable over the past week.

“The last time I trusted the cafeteria’s eggplant parmesan, I spent half of my shift praying to Saint Pepto.”
Ashley’s not-quite-ready-for-Yelp review of Garland Memorial’s food service.

“Every time you walk in the door you prove that money can buy everything.”
Joey’s comment to Leslie when she complained about the rich ladies at Fairmont Crest.

“I put ten toes down on her being busy with Andre. Or ten toes up..”
Chelsea’s response when Naomi wondered why Dani hadn’t responded to her text messages.

“FOMO is supposed to be for people you actually like.”
Eva to momma Leslie as Leslie eavesdropped on a nearby table.

“I don’t need all those fancy degrees to take all your money.
A grumbly Hayley, to herself, after Bill corrected her pronunciation of the word “rapprochement.”

“You know I love a dose of hot mess with my morning coffee.”
Dani when Naomi said she had gossip about who Bill night be having an affair with.

“It’s ancient history, buried like a mummy. In fact, King Tut would have a better chance at resurrection than Bill and me.”
Dani laughing off Naomi’s insinuation that her parents were having an affair.

“You have impeccable taste.”
“I wish I could return the compliment.”
A shady, unbothered Nicole as Hayley tried her best to win her over.

“The road to love is paved with cringe and honesty.”
Andre’s relationship advice to his Uncle Ted.

“Imma Jet2 you on a permanent holiday.”
Ren when Jacob claimed his smile was the result of looking at Instagram memes.

“Joey would never hurt me intentionally.”
“Oh, girl, that’s definitely not going to age well.”
Vanessa’s defense of Joey to Nicole, and my out-loud response to the television when she said it.

Can Eva and Kat get along? It seems a lot of viewers don’t care — they don’t want them to even be around each other. Other, though, see potential.

While it looks like Lynette is really, truly gone… not everyone believes she is dead.

Meanwhile, it seems I am not the only one to notice the chemistry between Karla and Timon. But putting Dani and Bill back together? That doesn’t seem to be a popular option. One viewer wants Bill to be reminded over and over and over about the mistake he made.
