It was a tragic week both in real life and in Port Charles. Will Cyrus claim another victim? Can cooler heads prevail between Willow and Michael’s loved ones for the sake of the children? It’s time to discuss that and more in this week’s General Hospital commentary for the week ending January 10, 2025.
My dearest readers, I am writing you with a heart so heavy I can barely form sentences. The fire on General Hospital was filmed long before the actual city it was filmed in went up in flames. ABC rightly warned viewers that they may not want to watch this week because it hits too close to the devastation in Los Angeles. I used to live in L.A. and I spent over 25 years living in Southern California. Watching this glorious city go up in flames is the most shocking sight imaginable.
Heartbreaking reality
Watching street after street of burned-out neighborhoods has me gutted. Our own Cameron Mathison lost his home, but thankfully he and his family escaped with their lives. I was all set for a week of hating Drew on GH, but Iโm so heartbroken for Cameron that I canโt muster up any rage for the character he portrays. I mean, he lost everything.
Sadly, Cameron story was lived by thousands of other Angelinos whose names I do not know, and whose faces I donโt recognize. My heart aches for all of them. I grew up in the church. My dad was a pastor. I spent much of my adult life working in full time ministry. But right now, my faith fails me. It seems like God isnโt responding to the millions of prayers to spare the City of Angels. Iโm so sad. The only thing I know for sure right now is that firefighters are angels on earth.
But my mission here is to talk about General Hospital, and so I shall.
Michael’s shocking and tragic exit
We have known for a while now that Chad Duell intended to leave General Hospital, but I doubt that any of us anticipated that his end would be so brutal and fiery.
I had guessed that Michael would leave with Sasha and their new baby, or that ELQ would send him to their offices in Jakarta, or something that would take Michaelโs character out of play only to return for a few months later with a new face. Possibly Robert Adamson who has filled in as Michael several times lately. But today, at the end of Fridayโs episode, we saw Cyrus injecting a syringe filled with Digitalis into Michaelโs IV. So, are we supposed to think Cyrus is attempting to be some angel of death trying helping people escape pain? Oh hell, no. I reject that plot twist as fiercely as the one where Heather was only bad because of a hip implant.
Another mob war on General Hospital
I was wrong about how Michael would leave the show. General Hospital went big and turned Michaelโs exit into a major mob war storyline. Before Jenz Sidwell showed up on Spoon Island with Lucy, I suspected Cyrus was the bad guy. Lucy is such a blabbermouth, she keeps telling Sidwell everything he needs to know about everyone in town without him asking a single question.
Itโs clear now that Jenz is making himself all cozy at Wyndemere that he is planning to take over Port Charles. Apparently, his plan included leveling the current Don — Sonny — by way of a bomb. Those gutted out penthouse scenes were impossible to watch this week. The real-life scenes like this kept creeping into my brain as I watched, and I kept tearing up.
When Lucy pointed out Sidwellโs view of Port Charles from his balcony, he got an evil smile when she pointed out Harborview Towers. He most certainly planted the bomb.
Collateral damage — again
But as always happens with these things, Sidwellโs plan went awry; he missed. Sonny doesnโt even have a paper cut, while Michael is covered in third degree burns. It happened to Sonny’s first wife Lily and their unborn child, to Connie Falconeri, to Michael when he was a kid, and to Morgan. The people who want Sonny dead never have a steady enough aim, and they always hit one of his loved ones instead. This would seem so unlikely except for the fact that there is an actual person who never ever pays for his crimes, so maybe thatโs who they modeled Sonny after.
A turning point
I think Michaelโs injury will be the turning point for Jason. When Jason reminded Sonny about their discussion of an exit plan, Jason noted that he didnโt want this to happen to Danny. Jason is extremely mindful right now that he is Dannyโs only parent. I thought to myself, โJack Brennan better get Jasonโs desk ready; heโs ready for the WSB.โ
But what about Sonny? Can he really let it all go? Heโs been in the mob his whole life. Did Sonnyโs heart attack actually scare him straight? What will he do? Run the bar with Kristina? Will he actually, devote his life to Sonnybucks, become a true coffee connoisseur and travel the globe looking for small coffee farms to partner with? Get deeper into the record label with Brook Lynn? Or will he go back to Nixon Falls and wipe the bar down with Phyllis and Ghost Lenny? I canโt picture Sonny as a non-mobster.
But I want that for Sonny. He got sucked into the mob at an early age and has felt trapped in that life since we have known him. Heck Sonny, go to Selina Wu, give her your territory. Let her hold all the poker games she wants at Curtisโ forgotten night club. Let her duke it out with Sidwell. Run as fast and far as you can.
Sonny’s future if the worst should happen
Sonny probably wonโt, but I donโt know what he will do if Michael dies. Sonny will not be able to live with himself.
I think itโs weird that the writers havenโt had Sonny and Nina in a scene together in eons. It would make sense that they would talk right now, donโt you think? It looked like they may have a scene next week, but will she be able to convince Sonny to give Michaelโs kids away to Michael’s cheating wife? I doubt it. Especially if Willow tries to muscle Carly and Sonny out of their sonโs health care decisions. I will seriously hate her forever. Whether she has the legal right or not, thatโs just evil.
A candle in the wind
I wish Nina would confess to Willow that sheโs had sex with Drew. Michaelโs assessment of Willow seemed spot on; Willow turns herself into the person her current lover wants her to be. Sheโs a chameleon, a candle in the wind as Elton would sing.
But I think it was Joss who truly nailed it. She pointed out to Willow that Willow cheated on Chase with Michael, she cheated on Micheal with Drew, and Joss predicted that Willow would cheat on Drew with someone, too because Willow is โa lying, faithless, skank.โ
I found Jossโ tirade to be extremely satisfying. Joss yelled all the things at Willow that I have been yelling at my TV this week. I mean my God, Michael sat by her side through cancer and has been supportive of anything she wanted. She wanted to be a nurse, then decided to be a spokesperson for a nonprofit, and then decided to be a nurse again. Throughout, Michael was continually supportive.
Think about this. Michael is a good-looking guy. Heโs kind, faithful, and he’s a good dad. Heโs rich as all get out and he adores Willow. But that wasnโt enough for her. She got a little itch for dreamboat Drew and tossed Michael away like Tuesdayโs trash. Willow has this reputation as an innocent angel which she definitely is not.
General Hospital’s illicit lovers
As Drew and Willow were in their hotel gleefully cheating and whining to each other about what victims they were, Michael was on fire. Sure, they didnโt know that, but they did know they were hurting him with their affair. Willow is making such reckless choices. I mean taking Michaelโs son to go be with Drew out of state without telling Michael? Dumb. Diane Miller will run rings around her. But back to Michael.
A poignant moment
Chad Duell and Steve Burton had this moment on Thursdayโs episode when Michael opened his eyes and was clearly in such severe pain. Michael and Jason looked at each other and said everything without uttering a word. My heart exploded as Jason remembered holding baby Michael so many years ago.
I donโt know why Chad Duell decided now was the time to leave General Hospital, but hey, maybe at Christmas I will see him in a Hallmark Christmas movie where he plays a guy in flannel who owns a Christmas tree lot.
Josslyn under pressure
I also want to highlight Eden McCoy this week.
Between Dexโs death and Michaelโs fiery accident, Joss is one big raw nerve right now. We watched her fondle Dexโs gun, probably imagining shooting the person who took him from her. If itโs Joss who ends Cyrus once and for all, I wonโt be mad about it.
But when Carly told Joss that Willow went to Washington, D.C. to sleep with Drew, and she took Wiley, I saw the rage of multiple heartaches rise up inside her chest and explode all over Willow. Nothing that Joss said to Willow was a lie, although she was probably crueler than she would have been under better circumstances.
When Nina arrived on scene and Joss called them โa bunch of lying liars,โ I laughed and laughed. A great set of scenes for the grieving Joss. I always love Trina and Joss scenes, too, and those two beautiful ladies grieving the loss of their lovers was sad and beautiful.
Then there’s Kristina
But now Iโm going to be mean about Kristina, so if sheโs your favorite, skip this section.
As her brother lay fighting for his life, Kristina is in her usual state, ‘What will happen to ME if my brother dies? Heโs the one who gets ME out of trouble! Heโs the one who listens to ME when I need to talk.’ I wanted to throw something at her, but Iโd never want to break my TV. She wasnโt all that concerned about Michaelโs kids potentially losing their dad, or about Sonny losing his son. It was all about her not having someone to bail her out.
Poor Molly took pity on Kristina and went to General Hospital to take care of her despite all the horrible things Kristina has said to Molly as of late. Ugh.
Kudos to Brad
In another outburst, kudos to Brad for pummeling Cyrus with a steady stream of insults. Kudos to Portia too for finally banning a serial killer from General Hospital. But with Cyrus gone, that means no more killings which will make Liz look even more guilty because if the suspicious deaths stop while she is on leave, they will assume she had something to do with it.
Will anyone ever put the Cyrus piece together into the puzzle? Oh man, did you see the look on Cyrusโ face when Portia banned him? Iโm afraid for Trina.
Sasha’s future
Do you want to hear my prediction/wish for Sasha? Jason will find out that Sasha is pregnant with Michaelโs baby, and he will get a place and take her in. She can cook for Jason and Danny, and Jason will protect Sasha and her new baby. The two of them will develop feelings for each other, and then about a year from now Michael will come back and want Sasha and the baby, and she will have to choose. I do think Sasha would be safe to confide in Jason about her pregnancy.
Maybe on the ride home from the hospital, Sasha will break down and confess. I enjoyed Jason and Sasha’s scene today.
Another high point
Also, I loved the scene with Maxie and Felicia. Felicia made a point of expressing her love to Maxie and telling her how much she values her beautiful daughter.
I think that’s one of the hardest things for me since my mother died. She used to call me, talk to me, and tell me she loved me every single day of my life. My mother cared about every minute detail of what was going on with me. She said her friends used to ask her what we talked about every day, and she would tell them, โWe say all the things we won’t be able to say when we are gone.โ She had Feliciaโs lesson down pat.
Sonny and Carly’s enduring love
But I digress. Carly and Sonny in the chapel moved me. To me, Sonny and Carly will always be the endgame. If this is how they get here, sobeit.
I am so glad I havenโt seen Natalia at all so far this year. I hope sheโs gone on tour with Blaze never to return. Sonny telling Carly they would walk together through Michaelโs recovery as a family made me smile.
This can’t be the end for Michael on General Hospital
I hope Sonny and Carly get the chance to keep that promise, but if Cyrusโs drug does the trick, there may be no recovery for Michael and that will break my heart.
Not just for the senseless end to a great character, but because Michael has many stories left to tell. Heโs in the midst of ELQ intrigue, the end of his marriage to Willow, having a child with Sasha, and being the father of two kids he worked hard to have and keep. I want to see all that, even if it has to be with a recast.
Hopefully, the writers havenโt killed Michael. I want Jason to catch Cyrus walking out of Michaelโs room, beat the crap out of him, save Michael, clear Elizabeth’s name, and Michael goes off to a burn rehab for a bit.
What will happen tomorrow dear readers?
Will Lulu do a YouTube travel video about how to immediately access your old passport and get your hands on funds to buy an international airline ticket with no advance notice after waking up from a long coma? Will Lucy ask Jenz to pencil her in as his date for General Hospital’s next Nurseโs Ball? Is Drew in for a left hook punch from Sonny for bullying Carly while her son lay critically injured in a burn unit? (I hope so.) Can Cyrus please get the knockdown beating he so richly deserves? Will Willow regret crossing Carly now — or will Carly make her pay later? Will L.A. studios survive to even make more movies, TV and soap operas?
Oh, dear readers, I hope so. But today, I have to wonder.
I will tune in tomorrow as long as there are tomorrows. Even when I am brokenhearted.
Love to you all.

Michael’s exit could be interesting. What will happen with his Aurora and ELQ stock? Jason has always let Michael have proxy over Jason’s ELQ stock and Michael probably trusts Jason more than anyone. Wouldn’t it be interesting if Michael has named Jason to have control of all Micahel’s stock? Jason would control both ELQ and Aurora. He’d be in a position to enact revenge for Michael… legally! Can you imagine Drew’s face if he found out that Jason controled Aurora?
I would be over the moon if that happened! :). Excellent idea.
Oooh yes please ๐
Spot on! I definitely think MIchael was right. She went from the Cult/Shilo to Chase. From Chase to Michael. Michael to Drew. Willow definitely needs to find herself and in order to do that, Drew needs to be wiped off her perview. Nina needs to confess, let the chips fall where they may, but Willow needs to open her eyes and see her pattern. Then, she needs to get herself into therapy. She’s dragging her children into her confused love-life and that’s not healthy for them. For all her preaching about “My kids! I’ll do anything to protect my kids!”, she’s really not. She’s destroyed their home, alienated their father, is taking her son on trysts with her lover. How is that healthy?! Girl needs some serious Kevin Collins assistance – STAT. And Nina is defintely not helping. She’s gone go-ho Mama with Willow when five seconds prior, you couldn’t stand her guts because of pseduo-daughter Charlotte. Nina needs some assistance as well, cause she’s not acting motherly at all.
I agree completely. Nina never helps, she always makes things worse! She has the absolute worst instincts. Maybe Kevin Collins offers a family plan and they could get therapy together. ๐
Carly and Nina in therapy would be priceless.
This post is so on point. You would think that Willow would remember Nina thinks Nelle just needed more love (or whatever) and could have been reformed and take a step back when that’s the person who is defending you. I don’t know what’s wrong with that girl. Maybe she just doesn’t understand anything other than being put on a pedestal. People keep calling her out with completely valid criticisms, and she’s just not getting it.
I think the choice of Sidwell as the next GH villain and Sonny rival came out nowhere. Selina Wu doesn’t even have a high stakes poker game any more that he can sit in on. The lead in to this scenerio is quite poor.
Agree!
Dear Tamilu – You are a kind person. CM has lost his home; and he has been on TV sharing this fact. You are kind to not jump all over his character who is the most unaware persona on daytime TV at the moment.
Please allow me to help you out – “This….is family” was the most self serving all about me moment next to Krissy lamenting that her brother would niot be there to take care of her. I digress. I am beginning to think the character of Drew did suffer brain damage to believe he had screw his nephew’s wife and mother, win an election, and then believe he can get away with it because he and Willow are in love. And ….he’s Family. While Curtis is getting up there with Aunt Stella as far as jumping into other peoples’ problems…Curtis was correct at the hospital – Leave! What are you doing here? Go! One can wish he would hear the siren call of the Congress convening…..
Nothing like drama for CD’s exit – third degree burns over 40 % of his body and now Cyrus has loaded his IV with digitalis. FV promised the role would not be recast (oh dear – that can be taken two ways) and CD wants to return after his break. The mention of long term burn center gives me hope – as long as Willow has her head out of her (rear).
and then there is Josslyn – given this young woman an emmy – she has some great material. That take down of Willow, and NIna, was Emmy worthy. “Why thank you, and Willow is just like you” was the ultimate comeback. NIna was speechless. And now Brennan has her doing his work for him? Is this a covert test to see if Joss is agent worthy? She fell for it – breadcrumbs indeed.
And I love the mystery of who set up the incendiary device? Cyrus, or Jenz. I am leaning towards Jenz, as he is a man on a mission of revenge and takeover. He lost his diamond mine, so hey! east coast mobster is worth looking into. What surprises me is the WSB has no idea he is in PC – wandering about in the Public without a care. That is a slip up on the part of the writing team. The WSB looks sloppy, and that is not the image they had been showing.
and finally – the comic relief of Alexis and Ric is a joy. It is a nice balance to all the horror going on in ICU, and LA County.
The only thing Joss left out was comparing Willow to Nelle. I had forgotten about Shiloh , as I never cared for the story, but when you add up Willows past of being in a cult, being fired as a teacher, giving up her first born child, bouncing from Chase to Michael to Drew and Nina’s history, Diane should have an easy case. But, it is a soap.
Thank you! I agree with your points completely. Alexis and Ric are so good together, I hope one of these days they remember why they fell in love way back then and come to an understanding. Maybe Alexis will try and seduce Ric just to keep Ava from having him! Hard to say where this is all heading. I love your idea about Josslyn becoming an agent! Sure, medical school is all well and good, but she has the smarts and drive to figure out mysteries, too. Maybe she can take on Sam’s role and be a P.I. with Spinelli. I wonder what cool nickname he would give her???
You forgot – Joss is now in environmental studies. She decided medicine wasn’t for her.
I absolutely LOVED the xmas decorating truce/scene with Alexis, Ric, and eventually Molly. I wish it had been longer! I love these two actors together, and how Molly ‘fits’ with the two of them all these years later.
Yes, I know that TPTB and the writers have had Ric do some truly despicable things in the past…but honestly, so have at least 75% of the characters we’re supposed to love unconditionally, at some point.
One of my all-time favorite GH scenes was way back when Alexis and Ric married due to convoluted circumstances, and Alexis proposed a marriage strictly of convenience (although there was clearly more to their feelings.) I remember Ric’s heartbreaking and passionate response about how he grew up in just such a cold household and could never do that, and knowing how much Alexis had suffered so horrifically growing up it truly felt like two lost souls finding each other.
I would love to see these two find their way back to each other, think of the feistiness, comedy, and passion potential!
Tamilu and Liz masters, what do you think of the argument that willow was justified on fridays episode because of what Diane did on Thursday? Some people say that willow has a right to do what she needs to do to get her kids back.
Excellent point! It’s like the hospital staff are as incompetent as the police department…go figure.
I disagree, because Diane only did what she did because of Willow leaving the state with Wiley and not telling Michael. I doubt Diane would have taken such action otherwise. If Willow keeps Sonny and Carly from their son and he dies, God help her. They will blame her and there will be no place she can hide to escape their wrath.
I don’t know if this was ever addressed, but I don’t think General Hospital ever informed the police that Sam and Dexdied due to digitalis. They still seem to be handling it as an internal problem rather than a crime. So even if Joss catches Cyrus for stabbing Dex, that won’t link him to the other murders.
I don’t think they’ve reported it. We don’t see any police presence at GH and Cyrus is STILL wandering the halls of GH. Even with a face mask you can recognize this guy.
There are loose ends all over the place! You’re right, I don’t think the cops know about these three suspicious deaths, only the internal hospital investigation. And now, soon to be four, and with Liz on leave, they won’t be able to blame her for the death this time!
GH has gone from incessantly dragging the Sasha character to making Dante lose two of the most important people in his life within weeks of each other. There is nothing fun about GH now.
Iโm also distracted by the wildfires. I went to college in LA. There was so much to do, so much to see, something always going on. It was like the whole world was open to me, and it started my love affair with big cities. LA will always hold a special place in my heart, and it hurts to see what is happening there. I also had a brief experience being displaced in an apartment complex fire a decade and a half ago. My situation was relatively easy. I had plenty of options of new places to live, no home to rebuild and great insurance. But what a tiring experience it was. Your life is on hold until itโs settled, and itโs a constant demand on your time. I was on the phone with my insurance agent every day for weeksโand he was nice, helpful. My heart goes out to the people who are going to have a much longer road with their houses, their businesses, their neighborhoods, their local schools all gone. So, yeah, I donโt have the heart to rail about Drew either.
I will give Willow no such grace. Whoever is telling Katelyn McMullen to play all of her scenes with absolutely no hint of guilt or remorse, that person is not her friend. The show is going to such lengths to make her unlikeableโthe kicker being having her in bed with Drew while Michael was on fireโIโm thinking they may very well let this story arc play out and then send her and Nina packing. What other avenue is there for her? The only other eligible man on the show in her age range is TJ, and please, please do not do that to him. Maybe Cody, but indications are he will get involved with Lulu.
I do want to spend some time talking about what a good job (in my opinion) the show and Eden McCoy have done with Josslyn. The character tends to get a lot of flak for being hard charging and judgmental, which may very well turn stale if sheโs still that way in another decade with what will certainly be a longer list of her own mistakes. But remember how Julie Marie Berman was such a great Lulu because she was everything you would think Lulu would beโyou could see Luke in her, you could see Laura and the cherry on top was that she looked exactly what youโd expect Lauraโs daughter to look like. I think the same applies to Josslyn. Sheโs got Carlyโs bulldog nature, her fierce loyalty to family. But thereโs a little more compassion, a little more integrity. A cool head in a crisis and a tendency towards heroism that she obviously gets from her dad. Physically, Eden McCoy is the perfect look. Sheโs got great understanding of her character, and she is always, always in character. I would say sheโs one of the best actors on the show, not just the best young actor. She was terrific both in the quiet scenes in Dexโs apartment (I am worried about her having that gun) and reading Willow the riot act. Unfortunate that her stupid sister in law is so far gone nothing anyone says to her penetrates.
Lastly, I think itโs funny weโre all so occupied with Michael, Willow, et al that thereโs no time to mention the somewhat unsurprising reveal but also somewhat of a bombshell that Brooklyn has a kid, LOL. Who certainly must be Gio. And most likely also Danteโs son. I donโt know if I have too much to say about it either. The recreated history part I canโt judge until I see if the end result is worth it. I do not particularly like the light this will put Lois in however. Her strength as a character has always been her honesty and no nonsense attitude. To embroil her in this many lies if she turns out to know Gio is her grandson, well, I donโt like it.
Kathie, I completely agree about Eden and the richness she brings to her character. She is completely authentic and believable in every scene
Liz masters and Tamilu, I have another question. Someone pointed out to me that because of Michael and Curtis taking aurora out from under drew by making the stock price go down, investors lost retirement money. Can you say something that would make me feel better about that part?
I live in Northern California where we are no strangers to wildfires, and have felt sick to my stomach all week at the ongoing devastation in LA. I’m not a big praying person but have found myself praying with everything in me that the incredibly dangerous dry winds that are forecast to return somehow lessen and calm. Praying for a miracle, I know, and in the meantime trying to figure out the best way to help. I’m a lifelong SF Giants fan sending all my love to LA.
I also can’t find it in me to comment on the character Cameron plays, other than to say to the writers: Can you please remember that you’re supposed to write soap villians/flawed characters that we LOVE to hate (not just hate?) There’s no finesse or nuance at all to a lot of what they have been serving up, it’s just depressing (and so very unsexy to boot.) And having Carly railed at in the most deliberately cruel way possible while her only remaining son may die, and told it’s HER fault on the very day of the event, is just disgusting.
Joss’ scene with Willow, and then with Willow and Nina, was by far my favorite thing in recent memory on this show. Soooo cathartic!
I’ve been so incredibly bored with yet another fertility-challenged storyline, made worse by the decision to have Gio be Brooklyn’s kid. Aside from the insult to us the viewers and it coming out of literally nowhere and being beyond inconsistent with character history…who cares? So boring.
If they kill off the character of Michael, rather than just have him leave the canvas for a while, it will be the laziest, least imaginative move yet in a series of them. I did find it potentially hopeful that they did not write it so that Michael’s face is burned! (If they do recast, I hope it’s not the actor who has occasionally filled in, he really doesn’t have the same energy, seems more AJ-like.)
I know that soaps, and other TV and movies are “just entertainment.” But I’m also aware that they are livelihoods for so many, many people in the devastated LA area, on and offscreen jobs. So I hope that the industry will keep the jobs going as much as possible and I am here to support that too!
Leslie Charleson has passed away.
