General Hospital Commentary: New Jack City

Viewers got a shock when Jack Brennan changed overnight as Charles Mesure exited and Chris McKenna took over the role. Will the recast change course for Jack and Carly? Meanwhile, Sidwell has an unexpected connection to Natalia, and the walls are closing in on Cyrus. Let’s discuss that and more in this week’s General Hospital commentary for the week ending February 07, 2025.

Dear readers, I canโ€™t deny my disappointment that Charles Mesure opted to leave GH. I adored his version of Jack Brennan, and the chemistry he had with Laura Wright. Carly and Jack seemed like an inevitability, but many of the romances on General Hospital these days are taking way too long to get anywhere.

Jason hasnโ€™t had a love interest since he returned. Ric and Ava hold promise, but we are only one kiss in on what could be. Liz and Lucky finally started to get somewhere this week, but their reunion is moving at a snailโ€™s pace. It also continually gets interrupted. Jordan and Isaiah seemed like they had some serious relationship vibes, but then Brick shows up in town. Suddenly, it all feels uncertain which direction the writers are going. Trina and Kai were starting to get some sparks, and then the writers decided to cripple Kai.

Joss is mourning Dex and on the hunt for his killer and Dante is mourning Sam. Although we are hopeful that he and Lulu will reunite eventually.

Maybe new Jack (Chris McKenna) will grow on me. We havenโ€™t seen enough of him yet to form an opinion. On the downside, he doesnโ€™t have the sexy Aussie accent, and I havenโ€™t yet witnessed the Jack Brennah swagger. But I have an open mind, and I hope in the coming weeks he captivates me and makes me fall for him in the role. I really want to like him. I want him to be a new love interest for Carly and for everyone to be wrong about him using her.

In other news, as you know, I have been whining about Natalia for quite a while. But today, we got a clue about her past. I didnโ€™t know why she was still in town after Blaze left, and I didnโ€™t understand why the writers would blow up two promising couples like Dex and Joss or Cody and Sasha but keep Sonny and Natalia together who have never captured my interest as a couple. But perhaps the writers have been playing the long game.

When Sidwellโ€™s goon called in to report to Jenz today, he was reporting not on Sonny but on Natalia. Jenz seemed surprised to hear Natalia was with Sonny. Is Jenz her husband? Her ex? Why is he tracking her? Is he Blazeโ€™s dad? How does Natalia play into his orbit? Now Iโ€™m interested. Perhaps the writers had a plan all along, or perhaps they made this up on the fly, but either way, it at least gives Natalia a reason to be kept on the canvas.

Another name that perked up my ears was Austin Gatlin-Holt. Is it possible that Austin is still alive and not as dead as we thought? There is reason for hope, since soaps rarely mention names of presumed dead characters without reason.

If Roger Howarth shows up in town and is in cahoots with Cyrus by choice or coercion, I wonโ€™t be mad. But Iโ€™m still mad about the destruction of Liz and Franco. The one time that General Hospital did a redemption story where a serial killer became a good guy, and it worked.

Unlike Cyrus. Itโ€™s clear that Cyrus is going to die soon, because about a dozen people in Port Charles want him dead. Top of the list are Lulu, Josslyn, and Danny, and Trina, Portia, Curtis, Laura, Martin, Lucky, Liz and many others No one would shed tears if he died. Maybe Austin will return to kill Cyrus and become the town hero and get his job back at General Hospital.

Liz and Lucky discovered another patient who had a mysterious heart attack and died after being visited by Cyrus, and I suspect the Turning Woods list will turn up even more names. Itโ€™s weird that it has taken a hunt for a serial killer to help Lucky and Liz reconnect, but I donโ€™t care about the howโ€™s and whys, only that they are reconnecting. When Liz told Lucky that she canโ€™t be anyoneโ€™s angel and he told her that he only needed her to be herself, my stone-cold heart melted a little.

My heart melted even more when Lucky pulled Liz into his arms to dance. I screamed, โ€œYes, finally!โ€ at my TV. But before I was able to get too invested, Ric came knocking at the door and interrupted them. The General Hospital writers are super big fans of interruptions. Readers, if I was in the arms of my One True Love and he was about to kiss me and someone knocked at my door, you can bet I would finish that kiss before I went to the door.

Sure, Ric was there to share the happy news that Liz was cleared of murdering her patients, and was free to go back to work, but even so, I am weary of that tired tactic of slowing down plots.

Okay, letโ€™s talk about Sidwell. So, he was in some part of the world where there were no laws, so he couldn’t be held accountable for the horrible things he did. He then comes to the town of the people that he kidnapped and tried to murder, but he can’t be arrested because there are no laws where he came from? This doesnโ€™t make sense to me. The people he held hostage are all in the town he just moved to. Canโ€™t they still go to the cops and say, โ€œHey, that new PC resident held me hostage and tried to kill me, and I have four other witnesses in town that will tell you the same.โ€ Has Anna called Robert and Holly and told them Sidwell is in town — or that Sasha is knocked up?

Speaking of which, is it just me or is Cody getting to be super annoying? Why would he go blab all over town that Jason was the father of Sashaโ€™s baby just because he saw them talking? What a tool.

That might work to Jason and Sasha’s benefit though. If people think Jason is the father, they wonโ€™t be speculating that it might be Michael. I like the idea of Jason playing along and pretending heโ€™s the baby daddy until Michael gets home, to protect Michaelโ€™s baby and Sasha. It’s easy for me to imagine them setting up a cozy little home. Sasha could help Danny grieve for Sam, and they could be a happy little family. That is, until Michael comes home and then it all blows up, maybe after the baby turns one. I mean we have to fall deep in love with them so we can be destroyed when Jason gets his heart broken again.

Maxie has been advising half the town, but is anyone listening to her? She advised Emma to consider that Anna was a spy and stop trying to sneak around. Maxie advised Nina about the Drew and Willow situation. Maxie is trying to be a friend to Drew, Willow, Nina. Lulu, Brook Lynn and the trouble is, and trust me I have been there, their interests donโ€™t align. Being Switzerland is hard. You know a situation isnโ€™t good when Carly and Nina are contemplating partnering up. I swear though, they would be the best allies. Can you imagine having those two she-devils as your enemy? Drew better run to D.C. and hide.

Drew gets worse by the day.

Itโ€™s hard for me to remember when I liked or cared about Drew at all. He was an honorable and good man, now heโ€™s scheming and plotting and sneaking around like a deranged stalker. One thought I have had is, is this the real Drew? Do you recall after Drew came home from Pentonville everyone was talking about his temper and about how much he had changed? Was there some switcheroo in prison?

Are there triplets instead of twins with Jason and Drew? Thatโ€™s the only thing that would make sense as to Drewโ€™s complete turnaround in character. Maybe itโ€™s an undead Shiloh in a mask back to torment Willow. I donโ€™t know, but the Drew we see today bears very little resemblance to the guy who showed up in Port Charles in the Billy Miller era, and even the early Cameron Mathison era. Something has shifted.

Something has shifted in Dante, too and itโ€™s understandable. Danteโ€™s fiancรฉe was murdered, heโ€™s been kicked off the case to find her killer, his brother Michael is in a burn ward after a terrible accident, and his ex-wife just came out of a yearโ€™ long coma. Our beloved Dominic Zamprogna should be submitting scenes for Emmy consideration because he is absolutely nailing Danteโ€™s unraveling.

Dante is on the edge of losing it every single day and we are watching him try to hold it together minute by minute.

Alexa Havins is doing a magnificent job of capturing the fierceness and tenderness in Luluโ€™s heart. When a character is recast, I always hold my breath waiting to see if they can capture the magic of the character, and I feel like Alexa has definitely done that. She has a vibe similar to Julie Marie Berman and to me, her Lulu feels like classic Lulu, and I embrace her wholeheartedly.

I appreciate the scene when Lulu told Dante how much she appreciated Samโ€™s generous heart, and the willingness Sam had to put her life on the line to save Lulu. Loved that she gave Dante permission to talk about Sam with her, to remove those walls and fears for him, to give him a safe space to share his grief and loss. I know it will take time for those two to find their way back to one another, but building a friendship is a great start.

Another heartfelt scene I loved this week was with Alexis and Sonny. Nancy Lee Grahn and Maurice Benard have always had chemistry, and even in their mutual grief over Sam, they were mesmerizing on screen together. Alexis told Sonny that she hates this world, and that her grief was too heavy to carry. Sonny assured her that she didnโ€™t have to carry it alone and that he would walk with her through it. A genuinely precious scene.

But will Sonny be around to keep that promise? If he doesnโ€™t heed the medical warnings and get a pacemaker to deal with his heart issues, he wonโ€™t be around to protect anyone. Is there anyone who can get through to him? Maybe Carly, but she doesnโ€™t know.

I have a feeling that Ms. Wu and Jenz are going to be duking it out over Sonnyโ€™s territory while he is in the hospital. But will it be General Hospital or one far away from Port Charles?

Will Portia get tired of Brad blackmailing her and just admit her sins? Are Ms. Wu and Jenz destined team up to be a supervillain couple? Will General Hospital ever hire security guards who are alert enough to notice and keep a banned serial killer out of the hospital? Can Lucas forgive Brad after a few more trips to the gym and bicep flexes? Will Drew be more careful about leaving his clothes in Willowโ€™s sofa cushions the next time he has his way with her? Will Tracy overhear that Sashaโ€™s baby is Michaelโ€™s? (I hope so.)

Who else in Port Charles will begin a story with โ€œI was at a random bar in Mogadishu?” Will Joss drop out of medical school and become a WSB agent since sheโ€™s actually pretty good at it?

Only tomorrow knows dear readers and I will tune in tomorrow as long as there are tomorrows.

    Charles Mesure had charisma in spades. This is a case in which the actor made the character. New guy is like a milque toast accountant. No chemistry with Carly. Charles Mesure looked the part of a spy and had an edge that made Brennan interesting. No Aussie accent either! This ain’t going to work!

    It was very interesting that Sidwell was having Natalia followed and not Sonny. As for Sonny, what’s with this putting off getting medical attention? He needs a pacemaker. That is an out patient procedure that apparently takes an hour and can be done with local anesthesia. It’s not like he’s going to be in the hospital for a week and vulnerable.

    • Humor Me

      I get why he is putting it off – he knows that his enemies will perceive any medical treatment as a sign of weakness. And the next attack will be more lethal. Sonny is stil in denial concerning his own health – but he knows from experience about being down and being attacked.

      Completely agree about missing Charles Mesure in the role of Jack Brennan. All due respect to the actor, but if the role had to be recast, the casting folks majorly missed the mark on this one. He just doesn’t have the vibe, those “grey zone” roles need a very special mix of natural devilish charm and the ability to turn believably menacing on a dime while still having you kinda rooting for them and swooning a bit.

      In just a couple of episodes I lost all interest in Jack Brennan as a love interest for Carly and am now very bored when they’re onscreen together (same with Jack and Joss in the spy-in-training plotline.)

      So now waiting for a real romantic storyline for Carly but pleeeeeease not Sonny, never ever again, so beyond tired of that endless loop!

    • Kam

      I agree, Charles Mesure made the character of Brennan. I second I heard, “The character of Jack Brennan is now…”, my heart sunk before I even saw who the recast was. Now I will no longer be as interested in Brennan and his storylines. I am familiar with Chris McKenna from the few months he played a cop on the Young and the Restless, during the time when Steve Burton was on the show. I never liked McKenna’s character on Y&R, and while I have nothing against him personally, I don’t see him as Brennan.

    • Tamilu

      I am in total agreement. I am willing to give the new guy a chance, but as of now, I’m bored. ABC should have offered Mesure more money or whatever it would have taken to keep him. Or at least replace him with another sexy Australian. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Cody misinterpreting the encounter between Jason and Sasha reminded me of Mr. Furley on “Three’s Company” overhearing the middle of a conversation and jumping to the wrong conclusion.

    • JDF

      I don’t even know why they have the Cody character. Outside of being the village idiot when they need one , he serves no purpose. Yet, they put considerable resources into the character. They’ve rewritten numerous
      histories to fit him in, they built a new set and acquired horses so they can house him and give him a job, but he just seems to be a tool for advancing ridiculous story lines.

    • CeeGee

      Definitely mad about the deliberate squandering of the Cody character and feel so sorry for the actor! Still holding out hope that the writers and PTB will have him pull his head out of his butt and become worthy of a story with Molly. Despite the lines he’s forced to say, those two are very entertaining onscreen together and I totally buy the chemistry!

  3. Noelle Cosentino

    I am so incredibly bummed about the Jack recast. Chris McKenna isn’t doing it for me. I am not feeling any chemistry between Jack and Carly now. What a complete shame and disappointment.

  4. Humor ME

    Dear Tamilu –
    It is amazing that the departure of Charles Mesure has generated as much shock and disappointment as when Burt Ramsey was outed as Mr. Big. I feel sorry for the actor CMcK. The resemblence is there, but that is it. I am wondering if TPTB / Casting are furiously searching for someone who looks like CM and has that sparkle of chemistry with LW. I am thinking of the search for the replacements of HP/ LA Davis Girls. The simmilarities are the same.

    • JDF

      Ah, Mr. Big! Remember him marching in that parade? It was hilarious.

    Thanks for another great column Tamilu (and Liz too for last week if you are reading these comments!) I have been reading and enjoying the moments of respite from the Real News the past few weeks but haven’t had the energy to post until this week. Thank you for all the work and energy you continue to write these for us!

    I have continued to hold out hope that the show will bring Roger Howarth back since the day he left. My dream would be to have him back as Franco but I’ll take him as AGH if that’s the only option…as long as they turn that character into someone worthy of his amazing abilities!

    As for Dreeeew (as I’ve been thinking of him for weeks) and Dreeeewlow, I wish they’d hurry up and get to the only acceptable way out of this icky mess, which is clearly, as you write, some reveal that his brain (or whole self) has been washed or swapped or otherwise hijacked. And then Willow can go get the treatment she so clearly needs.

    As for Nina, she obviously isn’t willing to do “anything” to save Willow and her grandchildren from Dreeeew. If that were true, she’d woman up and give Willow the truth about the mom and daughter two-timing, lying snake, even if it did cost Nina her current place in Willow’s life. So please, Carly, count to 10 and get thee as far as possible from Nina’s brilliant ideas.

    As for Elizabeth, who I love, my heart’s wish is always and forever for Franco to return to her (or another character Roger plays), but if I can’t have that (or not yet), I’m good with the Lucky rematch to move itself right along. Or Ric (but I’d honestly love to see Ric and Alexis find a way back to each other, as the rascal but heartfelt (but still salty) version of Ric we’ve seen at moments over the years.

    Lol, probably many unpopular opinions there (I also want to see the Carly-Jason rekindling happen) but…the heart wants what the heart wants!

    • Jane

      I agree with everything, except that last bit about Carly and Jason. Please no! I like them as best friends, but not lovers.

      • CeeGee

        I understand Jane! I figured I might not get much support on that one ๐Ÿ˜Š. I’m still not over how they (re)built up those romantic feelings again, all the way to very convincing I love yous and getting married, and then had Sonny burst in right before the wedding night love scene. I felt cheated!

  6. Jillharvey

    The transition was an epic fail. Nothing/no one compares to CM
    Better to have had him disappear or be killed off. This was very disappointing and hurtful to all involved viewers and actors on the part of the show.
    One loveShine on. Etc., etc.

  7. Jane

    Thanks for the great column, Tamilu! I always enjoy your take on our favorite soap!

  8. Kam

    As far as I understand it, if someone commits a crime somewhere else, they can still be arrested for it in the place they currently reside in. However, they would likely have to be transferred to wherever the crime occurred so they can be tried there because that is where the jurisdiction lies. In the case of a crime committed where there are technically no laws (I’m not really familiar with this, so this is just speculation), I would think that where were they currently reside, the person that they committed the crime against could probably at least get a restraining order against them, especially if there were witnesses to the crime. Then again if they were never convicted or tried for the crime because the place it happened had no laws, I’m not sure if even a restraining order would be possible. I would think that the offender could at least be on a watchlist, so that any crime they do commit in a lawful place would immediately be flagged.

    • CeeGee

      I have been wondering the same thing!

  9. Missez Premise

    Greetings Citizens of Earth!
    Rando Thoughts jotted down as I viewed the Week’s Shenanigans.
    Sorry if I’m repeating myself at times, just, that’s how it sometimes rolls.
    Omg omg omg.
    TPTB Hate Us and We Can’t Have Nice Things.
    Jack Brennan.
    We LIKE him!!
    So, Recast!
    Bastards.
    WTAF.
    (I KNOW it was CM’s decision to leave.)
    However.
    This guy is Wrong Wrong Wrong.
    He’s not even Aussie.
    Not. Feeling. It.
    I mean, it’s not the Actor’s Fault but really.
    Couldn’t they get Sebastian Roche to fill in??
    Anyway…
    It appears as if NotJack (not to be confused with NotJagger Jingleheimer Schmidt), is testing Joss to see if she’d be useful to the WSB.
    ::Fascinating::
    Let’s get back to that later.
    ~~~
    I see Sonny has restocked his “Just For Mob Bosses” Head Polish just in time for his “Business Trip” to California with Mami Dearest.
    ~~~
    Madame Wu is Back!! About time.
    Love me some Lydia Look.
    Unfortunately, Cooty, the Village Idiot, is about to get himself in trouble again.
    As expected, Apropos of Nothing, Cooty announces to Madame Wu and EwDrewQ that Sasha is carrying Stone Cold’s Love Child.
    Which we all know she’s not, but who cares?
    Besides Village Idiot Cooty.
    Speaking of Idiots, EwDrewQ.
    Goes from Brillo’s Bed to a Meeting with Madame Wu (Oh, Hi, Cooty!! Are you here to Announce Something Really Stupid to Madame Wu and EwDrewQ??? Of Course you are!!),
    to an Ass-Kissing Session with Anna Devane at the MC …
    Dude, where’s your Tie??
    Oh, Carly has it, and we’re hoping she’s made a Drew Sized Noose out of it.
    Sadly, she fails to Strangle him at this point, but she does Thoroughly Rip Him a New One.
    So Drew, the Pillar of Integrity, repeats loudly to everyone at the Metro Court, Cooty’s Propaganda that “Sasha is Carrying Jason Morgan’s Bastard Offspring!”
    Not those words exactly, but, pretty much.
    This is like the World’s Worst, Longest, Stupidest Telephone Game.

    Has Stone Cold caught wind of this yet?
    Looking forward to Jason’s reaction.

    EwDrewQ is easily the Most Despicable Character on GH.
    After he shouted Cooty’s Slander of Sasha throughout the Metro Court, I was truly hoping she’d slug him.
    Matter of fact, I’d like to see a Conga Line form, everybody gets to slug EwDrewQ right in his Smug Jaw.
    ~~~
    Alert the Media! Loosely made me laugh!
    EwDrew: “Should my ears be burning?”
    LooseLips: “Your Whole Head Should be On Fire!”
    Seriously.
    I really hate that Maxi fell for his BS, too.
    “I can tell you’re a Great Dad!”
    Sure, Maxi.
    Just like Peter August was a “Great Dad”!!
    Remember him?
    Geez.
    ~~~
    Am I hallucinating, or do Willow (at the Gate House) and Alexis have the exact same pillow sets on their couches?
    ~~~~
    What’s with Smiley’s Dead Dandelion he had hidden in his Bible?
    (And… will Brad be his next victim?)
    He knows someone was messing with his stuff cuz Joss put it back wrong.
    It was in a middle page marked with a ribbon, and Joss just shoved it in haphazardly.
    She’s going to make a Lousy Spy.
    She’ll fit right in with all of the Other Lousy Spies in Port Charles.
    ~~~
    What I do love, not surprisingly, is Tracy’s Declaration to Sasha that she is behind her 1000%.
    Now there’s a Broad whose Support I would Treasure!!!

    Oh look! The Three Witches from MacBeth (Alexis, NotKrissy, and NuNuNuNuMolly) have come to “Boil and Bubble, Toil and Trouble” with Danny!!
    What a Trifecta!
    Poor kid, he thought he was having Snacks and Netflix at Grandma’s, not an Intervention!!!
    “Danny, Your Mom was Murdered.
    Okay, now we’ll ship you back to the Q’s!!”
    Now Rocco AND Danny know it’s Cyrus who killed Sam.
    (Because everyone- i.e. Dante and Chase- talks Loudly in Kitchens about Ongoing Murder Investigations).
    Who knows?
    Those kids (Rocco and Danny) just might be more successful nailing Smiley Cyrus than the PCPD Clown Squad!
    We’ll see.
    Perhaps Joss (soon to take over Sam’s Position as World’s Worst P.I.), and Scout can join them.
    All they need is a Funky Van and a Large, Goofy Talking Dog!
    Ruh-Roh!!
    ~~~
    I still don’t know why the hell Ninny doesn’t tell Willow about their “Anger Management Sessions” on the Carpet (and Various Other Places) at Aurora.
    Right, because she’s Selfish and doesn’t want to “Lose MY DAUGHTER!”
    ~~~
    Aha!! Finally!! Austin Gatlin-Holt is mentioned!!
    (I’ve already forgotten who mentioned him. Was it Lucky or Liz? That’s OK, the Writers have probably forgotten already as well.)
    We never DID find out who killed him.
    Funny how that works.
    A Doctor at GH is Shot in Cold Blood, and everyone just sort of forgets about it?
    ::Fascinating::
    ~~~
    I like the idea of Ninny and Carly “Working” together.
    We need some Lucy and Ethel Hijinx!!
    First thing Ninny needs to do, with or without Carly’s input, is TELL WILLOW about her “Rug Rash Rage Reggae” sessions with EwDrew!
    Yeah, I’m not holding my breath, either, but it’s GOT to be revealed at some point.
    I can’t wait to see Drillow’s reaction when it is.
    ~~~
    So why is Jenz having Natalia (Mami Dearest) followed?
    Was it to get to Sonny, or was that just a Stroke of Luck?
    I doubt that.
    ~~~
    Boy, Smiley is sure mad at a lot of folks.
    And what exactly does a Restraining Order do?
    NOTHING!!!
    The Crap Smiley had been spouting to people who call him out.
    What Hubris!
    Reminds me of Someone I Shall Not Mention…
      The image of a Dreeeew-slugging conga line cracked me up!
