General Hospital Commentary: Assassin’s Creed

I love soap operas. I have since I was a kid, and this week’s General Hospital is exactly why I fell in love with this particular show. There was so much happening this week that I hardly know where to begin. There were several revealing scenes and plenty of dropped clues, betrayal, and treachery to go around. Will Marco survive a visit with Cullum? Jason had Cullum in his sights, but he failed to pull the trigger.

Jason made a vow to kill Cullum before Jason and Britt skedaddled from Port Charles. The plan was to secure enough medication so Britt could keep her symptoms at bay while Brick arranged for a sample to be replicated. The game was afoot, so Jason went to his super-secret storage unit where he keeps his assassin wares including a rifle with silencer and scope. It is a huge gun. He assembled it for us to get a good look at, while throughout the episode his thoughts drifted over recent conversations that had led him to that moment.

Afterwards, Jason disassembled the high-powered rifle, put it in his duffel bag and left to take care of business. I wonder if he drove over to the building across from Jack’s office on his motorcycle or the snazzy neon bright sports car that he tools around in. Whatever the case, he certainly didn’t bother to stop and change from his usual dark garb into something less conspicuous for a broad daylight hit perched atop a bright white fire escape. He stood out like a billboard sign with flashing lights.

Marked For Death

In the end, Jason didn’t fire a shot. He was too distracted from his mission fighting the urge to kill Brennan. It’s time for Jason to retire because the one time he really needed to eliminate a threat, he didn’t. Now, Cullum is paying turncoat Marco a visit armed with a knife. More on that in a bit.

Jason’s failure will have ripple effects for sure. Britt has her hands on two vials of medication, but Pascal is onto Marco. No doubt it’s what prompted Cullum to seek out Marco. Jason can’t save Marco, but will Jason be able to get away from Dante in time to catch up with Britt and leave town? Who knows. Britt and Lucas picked the absolute worst place to meet up, Rocco is lurking in the shadows, and both Cullum and Pascal are two steps ahead of everyone.

Monday can’t get her fast enough!

Now, let’s talk about Marco.

Marco desperately tried to redeem himself because he loves Lucas that much. But it’s clear both Lucas and Marco were in over their heads from the start. Their plan to steal the vials of medicine was slapped together and doomed from the onset. Who steals two vials of anything from men who see murder as a viable solution to their problems without a solid plan? Marco made no effort to cover his tracks, but it would have been easy to do. Lucas works at a hospital. Did it ever occur to him and Marco to get a picture of the labels so that Lucas could give Marco two vials of saline to replace the stolen medication? If nothing else, it would have bought them time.

I hate sloppy writing, and this felt sloppy. Pascal had busted Marco before Marco made it to the mainland.

I’ll Be Seeing You

I knew that something big was about to happen when Marco and Lucas said goodbye. Something about their parting felt final. Like it was their last goodbye. A few scenes later, and Marco was sitting in Alexis’ office doing paperwork when he got a text from Lucas. Moments later, Cullum entered the office hiding a knife behind his back. Is this the end for Marco? I’m almost certain that it is. First, the quick turn around with Marco when Lucas found out that Marco was in league with Sidwell, and now betraying his father in such a blatant way. Lucas is a fool if he doesn’t think the missing vials will be traced right back to him. They were in a safe not sitting out for all to see.

The question is if Sidwell knows what Cullum is up to. Did Pascal go straight to Cullum or did he tell Sidwell about his discovery, and Sidwell alerted Cullum? Sidwell is evil, but is he that evil? I don’t think so. Sidwell appears to genuinely love Marco. Pascal is now a dead man walking, and my gut tells me that Cullum will attempt to somehow frame Sonny for the murder.

Steve Burton is taking a brief hiatus from General Hospital, so Marco’s death will likely be the catalyst for Jason going underground. I really hope he takes Britt with him, but I have a sinking feeling that might not be possible.

I’ve been watching General Hospital for decades, so I know Sonny’s history. I watched it firsthand. Josslyn has good reason to dislike Sonny, but I don’t get the hatred or her determination to take Sonny down. The fixation doesn’t make sense especially since it doesn’t extend to Jason or even her wicked uncle Jerry Jacks. It’s also frustrating that no one ever bothers to correct her about Morgan’s death and who is to blame. It’s why it’s so hard for me to take Josslyn seriously as a spy. She’s such a terrible agent. Josslyn doesn’t follow orders – having gone rogue a couple of times now – and she couldn’t catch a clue if it was handed to her giftwrapped.

If Josslyn was even half as competent as she thinks she is, she would have picked up on the massive clue that Britt dropped on her this week.

A Slip of The Tongue?

When Josslyn questioned Britt about Faison, Britt said, “What I do know is this – my father is dead. The only thing left of him is his brain in a jar, four kids and my Huntington’s…” Excuse me? Four kids? I’ve never known General Hospital writers to make a mistake like that, so this isn’t a case of Kelly Thiebaud misspeaking and no one catching it. That was a clue. A clue that Josslyn should have picked up on immediately. I sure did, and so did many viewers.

I only know of three Faison children: Nathan, Peter, and Britt. Some on social media have suggested that Faison spoke of another son whom Faison referred to as “Sonny,” but I couldn’t find anything to corroborate that. There’s also a possibility that it was a nickname for Peter/Heinrik. All reliable sources list three children for Faison.

Fourth Faison

I do believe the addition of a fourth Faison offspring is recent. Given Nathan’s arrival, many of us can’t help but wonder if Nathan had a long-lost identical twin, and it’s Nathan’s twin who is posing as Nathan. Is that why there was a DNA match?

Nathan and Lulu had their first date. It didn’t go as Lulu had planned since James played third wheel for a while, but at the end of the night Nathan and Lulu ended up in bed. I’m not a fan of this pairing for a number of reasons. I’m over the Maxie thing in large part because I’m certain the man claiming to be Nathan is not Nathan. More on that shortly.

My biggest issue with Nathan and Lulu’s romance is that it went from friendship to romance in the blink of an eye. It was like a switch was flipped and suddenly they had these big strong feelings for each other that they could no longer deny. Nathan and Lulu were fighting everyone to just go out on a date. I could understand if they’d been dancing around an attraction for months, gave into their passions, and then suddenly Maxie woke up. But a kiss in a snowstorm? Nope. Don’t buy it. That’s how teenagers react to crushes, not grown adults with children and relationships under their belts.

Double Trouble

I realized why our General Hospital writers were in such a rush to get Nathan and Lulu in bed when Cullum inexplicably showed up on Lulu’s doorstep the morning after. Nathan’s visceral reaction to seeing the duplicitous director, the obvious silent exchange between the men as they stared each other down, and Nathan’s visit with Dante when Nathan insisted that they find a way to keep Cullum away from Lulu spoke volumes. Nathan knows exactly what Cullum is up to.

Did Lulu sleep with Nathan’s identical twin? There have been subtle clues for months that the man we know as Nathan is in fact not Nathan. His lack of desire to find out where he’s been for seven years, Britt’s reaction to James meeting his father, Nathan messing up something as basic as the chain of custody in a case, and that story he told Lulu about his father forcing him to memorize the periodic table as a punishment all point to an imposter. Oh, and his lack of skill swinging a bat. Individually they can be dismissed as nothing, but combined they paint a damning picture.

The Real Nathan

The biggest clue that this man is not the real Nathan was his reaction to Maxie. The real Nathan would have gone to her bedside. He wouldn’t have moved on — with her best friend no less — in just a few short months. The real Nathan would have wanted to reconnect with Maxie because she was the love of his life. He would have fought for her if she’d chosen Spinelli.

A twin twist explains why Nathan did none of those things. NotNathan was never in love with Maxie. What it doesn’t explain is why he’s in Port Charles and what his connection is to everything that’s been transpiring on Spoon Island. Was NotNathan coerced into cooperating like his sister Britt or is he a willing participant in the plot to resurrect Faison’s final crime against humanity? I can’t wait to find out.

Love is definitely in the air these days. Some of the pairings are great (looking at you, Emma and Gio) and some are not so great (Lulu and NotNathan). Here are the romances I’m keeping an eye on.

Romancing Elizabeth

Elizabeth is one of my favorite characters, so I’ve been frustrated by the lack of storyline and romance for her. Franco died on March 09, 2021, and since then Elizabeth has been pretty much single and backburnered. There was a brief dalliance with Lucky, but that was over when he decided to pack up and jet off. Becky Herbst is one of the most underutilized actors on the show, so I’m delighted that she’s finally getting some screentime.

Ric and Dante are both sweet on General Hospital’s top nurse, and I’m curious to see who will win her heart. I’m rooting for Dante mainly because Ric has a bad habit of self-sabotaging. Something about loving Liz always brings out the very worst in him. He swears that he’s turned over a new leaf, but that hasn’t been tested yet. As much as I love Ric, I don’t trust him.

Pretty Woman

Michael and Jacinda are going hot and heavy, but there have been signs that Jacinda hasn’t quite cut ties with her past life as she has led Michael to believe. I’m not sure Jacinda is the right woman for Michael. She’s nice enough, but she seems more like a rebound relationship than someone I can see Michael growing old with. Luckily for Jacinda, there’s really no competition. Willow has moved on to torturing Drew, and Michael seems to be related to all the other eligible ladies in town — except Justine. Currently, Justine only has eyes for Sonny.

This is the soapiest romance on canvas right now because it has the potential to get messy quickly.

Afternoon Delight

I love the chemistry between Laura Wright and James Patrick Stuart. Those two know how to bring the heat to a love scene and their characters are well-matched. More than that, I can’t wait for Nina to find out that Carly and Valentin are lovers. It might be petty, but I see it as karma for Nina’s relationship with Sonny in Nixon Falls. The only difference is that Carly isn’t taking advantage of Valentin’s situation. He knows exactly who Carly is.

Brook Lynn and Chase are on track to adopt Delilah’s newborn daughter. They’ve named the baby Phoebe and are now going to request to foster her while the police search for Phoebe’s next of kin. I’ve been watching General Hospital long enough to know when the writers are setting things up for a soapy plot twist.  To quote Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park, “Oh, yeah. Oooh, ahhh, that’s how it always starts. Then later there’s running and, um, screaming.” Trouble is coming.

Delilah might have dropped out of thin air, but there was a reason for that closeup of her tattoo. The writers intend to revisit it, and given all the mystery around Delilah’s appearance in Port Charles, it’s likely not going to be good for Brook Lynn and Chase.

Dawn Of Day

Those who watched General Hospital when Willow first appeared in Port Charles, might have noticed a similarity between Willow and Delilah’s situations. Both were young pregnant women, both had a mysterious past and no family connections, and both sported a tattoo of a unique symbol. Was Delilah running from a new Dawn Of Day cult leader? Shiloh liked to mark his disciples with a tattoo, especially the young women who were initiated into his circle of trust – or whatever he called it. Has someone taken Shiloh’s place in the DOD organization?

To my knowledge, Shiloh is dead. I know that it doesn’t mean much on a soap, but in this case, I don’t see the need to resurrect that particular sexual predator. Willow is going to have enough trouble with Sidwell and Drew.

Some quick thoughts about other things going on in and around Port Charles.

Safety First

I chuckled when I noticed that Jason’s super-secret storage unit didn’t even have a padlock on it, much less a security camera outside monitoring who is standing in that tiny alleyway. There’s more security on the employee lockers where I work than on Jason’s storage unit. 🤣

Danny’s Dangerous DNA

Alexis should have her memory checked because she seems to have forgotten that Sam was a self-proclaimed danger junkie. It’s what drew Sam to Jason in the first place. Listening to Alexis whine to Tracy about Danny getting his penchant for danger from Jason infuriated me. Given Alexis’ recent history, she’s the last person who should be in charge of Danny. I hope he stays put at the Q mansion.

Police Commissioner Dante Falconeri

Unless Dante has an arrest warrant, he can’t force Jason to do squat. And if he does have an arrest warrant, then Alexis had every right to act as Jason’s attorney. I expect better from Dante. Shame on Dante for dragging Jason away from Danny’s game. Danny is going to be so hurt and disappointed that Jason missed his game. I hope Sam haunts Dante’s dreams.

Meet Me at Pier 55

Why would Britt meet Lucas on Pier 55 rather than somewhere far away from the boat launch to Spoon Island? Also, why drag her suitcase with her? If I’m going to a clandestine meeting, I would have left my luggage in the car even if it’s on wheels. How is she going to explain that suitcase if she should run into Sidwell or Cullum? The odds are high since they use Pier 55 to ferry back and forth to Spoon Island!

We love reading what other fans have to say about the show, so please scroll down to the Comments section and share your thoughts. It’s at the bottom of this (and every) column.

Liz, I’m usually on your side, but I can’t agree with your assessment of Sonny. Loyal and protective? What he did to AJ and the way he treated Carly and Michael after Nixon Falls seem to contradict that. — Ryan

I don’t think Sonny is a very good person, but he’s not evil. He is protective and extends his generosity and care beyond just his immediate family. More to the point, there’s a lot of inconsistency and hypocrisy in Josslyn’s attitude towards him. She had no problem with his line of work and did not blame him for what happened to Morgan during the years she lived under Sonny’s roof. When she broke with him, it was over the betrayal with Nina, not because he was a criminal. — Kathie

I was hoping you would go in on Olivia.

    • Liz Masters

I am so freaking annoyed with her. Imagine Olivia, who slept with 3 mobsters, had children with two of them, judging Jacinda. hypocrite!!
Love how Michael threw Bobbie in Olivia and Ned’s faces. Olivia needs to take a seat.

      • Ryan

I was also annoyed with all of the digs that Olivia and Ned were making at Michael. Implying that Michael was paying her to date him and then actually saying that to Tracy later on. Also, the fact that they continued to make those digs after he brought up Bobbie was infuriating. Plus, they acted like Michael slept with “the help” when he slept with Sasha. Technically, that’s true, but everyone knows that Michael and Sasha had a relationship and friendship long before she started working as their cook. And frankly, I thought it was cruel to throw that in Michael’s face given that he’s not even able to see Daisy right now. Michael is much more civil than I am. I would have told Olivia to shut up and warned her not to imply I’m an irresponsible father again. Finally, even though Tracy wasn’t nearly as bad, what was she talking about when she accused Michael of taking advantage of Jacinda? That’s not true. He really cares about her.

        • Liz Masters

I see Tracy’s point though. I think Jacinda is a rebound relationship, and Michael will eventually move on. Jacinda is falling hard for Michael, harder than he is for her, so she will be devastated if their relationship ends.

          • Ryan

How do you know that jacinda is falling harder for Michael than he is for her? He went to the metro court to kiss her in front of everyone.

      • Ryan

Maybe Tracy is trying to say that Michael’s relationship with Jacinda is just a rebound, but she should just say that. Oftentimes, people do genuinely have feelings for their rebound or they think they do. Tracy’s making it seem like Michael is deliberately using Jacinda and I don’t like that.

        • Liz Masters

I love the relationship between Tracy and Michael. She genuinely loves him and is deeply protective of him. I think that’s why she’s trying to be careful talking to him. She doesn’t want to upset him by using terms like “rebound” because it will put him throw up a wall.

          • Ryan

What did you think of the offensive way that Olivia and Ned talked about Sasha? As much as I love Michael, he should have stood up for her.

          • Ryan

Do you believe that Michael is deliberately using Jacinda?

        • Liz Masters

I don’t know for certain that Jacinda is falling harder for Michael than the other way around, but the way she talks, the way she lights up when he’s around, and the fact that she was so reluctant to trust him in the beginning. Now, Michael is being the perfect Prince Charming and sweeping her off her feet. It just feels a bit too perfect, like the writers are setting Jacinda up for a big fall.
          It’s a soap so I’m suspicious…
I do believe that Michael genuinely cares about Jacinda. He’s in this relationship for the right reasons, but at some point, I think he may outgrow it. He is in a different place in life than Jacinda. He has two kids who are his absolute priority.

          • Ryan

That’s fair. I just wish that Tracy could have verbalized it the way you just did.

          • CeeGee

I’m not so sure about Jacinda, she seems to like Michael well enough (or at least the way he treats her) but she also has a pattern that seems to be increasing of hedging her bets. She’s kept her options open with Ezra, took money from Kristina to leave town even though she didn’t, and is now demanding bribes and kickbacks from Crimson designers and advertisers. I don’t see her as a good long term partner for Michael, for reasons that have nothing to do with her former occupation. She’s not the person Michael wants to see her as…

          • Kathie

I agree with CeeGee. Jacinda is no naive 20 year old. She’s got A LOT of experience with men. I’m sure she’s seen plenty post breakup of a major relationship. She’s got to know what a rebound relationship is and how unlikely it is to last.

  2. JDF

Cullum and Joss run into each other at Bobbies’ and Cullum engages her in conversation. But, Cullum is with Brennan! Every one knows that Brennan is WSB, so wouldn’t that blow Cullums’ cover as the caretaker at Wyndemere? It kind of tells me that he knows every thing about Joss.
Joss tells Britt not to tell Cullum that Joss is WSB. Why would Britt do that? Joss has to get over herself.

Marco is still blaming Sonny for Natalia’s death, but Marco previously detailed to Lucas how his mother dealt with adversity by drinking herself into a stupor. So how is Sonny responsible? According to Marco, Natalia was just following an established pattern of behavior.

What happened to Nathan’s bullet and surgery scar ?

I didn’t notice a lock on Jasons’ storage unit which houses his arsenal of weapons. He could not have been more visable on that roof top. Not exactly being careful.
I’m glad that he didn’t take the shot, though I have no idea how Brennan could be blamed in that scenerio. Of course, I knew that he wouldn’t take the shot because it is too early to get rid of Cullum. But once again the WSB does something that they would not be able to do in the real world by issuing a warrant for Jason. Warrants have to be issued by a judge and a judge is not going to issue a warrant to a non government organization. Dante should have told Cullum to shove it and that he has no jurisdiction in PC.

Why don’t people lock the door or lower the blinds when they are having sex on a soap? If they did, no one could walk in on them. It’s kind of like discussing secrets in public places. If they did it in private, no one could over hear them. Can’t have that.

    • Kelly

The Brennan and Cullum meet-up at the bar really stood out to me too. Cullum must know that Joss is Carly’s daughter – didn’t it even come out when he talked to her at Bobbie’s? So he would know that Joss knows her mom’s boyfriend and that he’s WSB. Maybe the fact that Joss didn’t ask him, the supposed lowly Wyndemere groundskeeper, what he was doing at a bar with a WSB agent caused Cullum to realize she’s not who she says she is?

  3. JDF

So right about Alexis being so wrong saying Danny has Jasons’ adventurous streak. Danny is just like Sam. Sam was not just “adventuous, she was reckless. Jason was never reckless. Sam also had a long career as a con woman and ironically criticized Jason for being drawn to danger when she was way worse.

    • CeeGee

Agree! I do hope Danny lives with Alexis while Jason is away, though. As much as I adore the Tracy of the past several years, I don’t love her way of treating any kids with Quartermaine blood like property. Given Jason’s history, I would think that would be the thing that tips the balance for him (plus the likelihood that Danny would get to spend a lot more time with Scout that way, even though Scout isn’t actually living with Alexis now.)

      • Kathie

Am I the only one who thinks Jason is a crappy parent for considering leaving Danny to run off with Britt? I understand Britt is in a dire situation, but, hello, Jason and Sonny have a criminal organization that can stash people in safe houses with bodyguards. Jason does not need to go with her. That part is for his and Britt’s pleasure. Which would be fine except it’s clear that Danny needs supervision. He doesn’t get it from anyone else at the Qs and that’s certainly not Alexis’s strength. Jason has run off on rescue missions, what, 3-4 times since Sam died. While I’m mostly glad Danny doesn’t resent this–I think ALL the kids on the show are best off accepting their parents for what they are rather than being angry with them–it’s kind of sad how the kid just accepts this as par for the course.

I also realize this is being setup for Steve Burton’s absence. But we have not previously given Nikolas, Lucky or Jason a pass for being absentee parents because the actors were not on the show. It’s what happens on screen that counts, not the actor’s contracts

I’m also very worried about Rocco because I don’t think Britt’s going anywhere and something happening to him would explain why not. That kid also needs more close supervision. He’s sweet and well intentioned, but his judgement is not great. Dante needs to start tracking his phone or something. Rather than waiting for something to happen and blaming someone else for it. Which he is totally going to do.

  4. CeeGee

My favorite favorite moment this week by far was the “You are enough” moment with Cody and Molly. It felt like Molly has been waiting for years to hear and feel that, and the scene was played so incredibly well by both actors, it gave me all the feels!

And I am rooting for Ric. Rick Hearst is so great in this role, he makes a dark character turning toward the light so compelling, where in a lot of cases it might make the character boring. He’ll always have an edge and his demons, but in this actor’s hand he’ll always be interesting!

  5. Missez Premise

TPTB seem to like making characters turn into Total Tools.
    This week it’s Agent Barbie.

Dear Liz- thank you again for another wonderful column with food for thought. I am gald you are happy with viewing. I am at the point I am rolling my eyes.
Jason “The Hitman” Morgan is unable to take a shot.
There is no trust between Father/Son et al at Wyndemere, as Cullum visits Marco with a very large knife behind his back.
Nathan and Lulu hit the sheets faster than most of us can blink after the date with so many things going wrong that I cannot image that they did not see the Universe telling them “NO”.
    Lucas is unlucky in love.

I honestly believe that Cullum is the fourth Faision child – the casting is amazing. He is a creep of the first order.

Yes! about Britt leaving with her luggage from the pier. Could she be more conspicuous? She could just throw a few things in a backpack or gym-bag, go to work, get the vials from Lucas, and leave from the hospital parking garage and no one would suspect a thing. Meanwhile, I want to see more Carly and Valentin not being able to fight their attraction. And lots of Alexis doing anything.
