So Much For Our Drama-free Day: A Beyond the Gates commentary by Soap Central founder Dan J Kroll for the week ending October 16, 2026.
There are certain things you never say in real life, things that could jinx an otherwise perfect day. Things like, “What could possibly go wrong?” or “Nothing could ruin this day.” The same applies for soaps. Of course, on a soap opera you could also add something like, “There’s no possible way that my ex-wife who was tragically killed in an elephant accident could ever come back from the dead and ruin our wedding day!”
Okay, maybe I’m just being overly dramatic.
But look at Anita and Vernon’s meal at the country club. They just wanted a little quiet time together. Then Anastasia showed up with a request to break up Tyrell and Chessie, Smitty was arrested, and Martin’s political career hung in the balance. Nicole just wanted to show up at the hospital for a normal work day, but her world was rocked by news that her ex-husband had gotten engaged. Hayley simply wanted a stiff drink so she could think about all the rich men she didn’t murder, and a parade of people marched up to ruin her daydream.
There’s no such thing as a drama-free day on a soap opera. And if you think you’re having one, oooh, you better watch out.

Jagged Little Pills
Poor, Smitty. Heโs the least likely person to commit murder and here he is being charged with a murder-adjacent crime. They do say itโs always the quiet onesโฆ
I was really hoping when Jacob and his fellow officers showed up with a search warrant that they wouldnโt find anything incriminating. But the minute Jacob started thumbing through the books, I knew something bad was about to happen. Sure enough, a random pill bottle was hidden behind some books. Within seconds Jacob knew that the pills were the same ones that killed Lia. I have no idea how he was able to jump to that conclusion so quicklyโฆ but he did.
Did the bottle have a label on it? If so, it would seemingly also have had a patientโs name on it. If there was no label, has Jacob committed to memory every brand name and generic medication so that he can identify them on sight?
I think we have all jumped to the same conclusion: someone planted the pills in Martin and Smittyโs home. The question is who?
All roads lead to Heather, but I canโt imagine a world where sheโd do the dirty work herself. Weโve never seen Heather in Martin and Smittyโs home, so itโs not like she dropped by for a visit and planted some incriminating evidence while she was there. It would have had to have been one of her goons or possibly one of the many minions that she’s threatening and blackmailing.
An Inside Job
After the police search, it was mentioned very much in passing that Martin and Smittyโs housekeeper had been dispatched to clean up the mess. This was the first time we had ever been told that the couple had a housekeeper. Itโs not unusual for them to have one, but it is unusual that it was mentioned. Maybe Martin and Smitty hired someone to help out once Smitty went back to work. Whoever this person is, they are at the top of my suspect list.
Other possible suspects would have to be people that are in the Richardson-Smith orbit. Almost everyone that has been in the home has been family, so I canโt imagine any of them deciding that framing Smitty and torpedoing Martinโs political career would be a fun thing to do on a random October day.
The only other person we have seen in the home regularly that is not a family member is Shonda, Martinโs campaign advisor. I suppose she could be behind the planted pills, though I struggle to come up with any scenario that would make sense of that theory. Thereโs been no change in the way Shonda has been acting, so there are no overt clues that sheโs up to something. Weโve never seen her in weird or awkward conversations with anyone that would set of warning bells. Has she been blackmailed off-screen? Maybe? That would be even less appealing than having the never-before-mentioned-or-seen housekeeper be the dirty deed doer.
A Hard Pill To Swallow
That leaves only one other possible explanation โ and itโs not one that I think any of us want to consider. What if Smitty really did give Lia the drugs that eventually killed her? I suppose he could have been unaware that the purple pouch contained drugs. Maybe he was told it was some contraband food item, though Smitty seems way too straightlaced to smuggle something into a jail. And if he did, Smitty doesnโt seem dumb enough to hide the drugs in his own home. Heโs had more than enough time to ditch them or hide them somewhere else.
Staying on the outlandish theory that Smitty really did do what heโs been accused of doing, what would the motive be? Iโve only come up with two possible explanations: heโs a psychopath or heโs the one being blackmailed. I said I had explanations, not that the explanations I had made any sense. The blackmail idea doesnโt seem to hold up because the outcome is the same. Smitty doing what the blackmailer said โ deliver drugs to Lia โ ends with Smitty being arrested. Not doing what the blackmailer demanded leads to planted drugs and Smitty being arrested.
While equally unbelievable, I will admit that the idea of Smitty being a psychopath is kind of hot. We think of him as a former stay-at-home-dad to two kids who moonlights as a Clark Kent look-alike. All the while we were unaware that he was really Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde.
Yeah, itโs so outlandishly ridiculous that I canโt even spend any more time trying to concoct a story that would make sense of it. If someone really wanted to frame Smitty, they could have had Lia choke to death on one of his Tide Pods.
Another Day, Another Mystery
Who planted the pills isnโt the only mystery surrounding Smitty. Thereโs also the who leaked police video that needs to be discussed. For this, there are only three possible scenarios: Elon Hawthorne, Marcel Malone, or someone we havenโt met yet.
Letโs start with the low-hanging fruit: Marcel. Iโm sure Leslie would have something spicy to say about her manโs low-hanging fruit. Ugh. I didnโt need that imagery in my head. La-la-la. Bunnies in Halloween costumes. Baby goats bouncing around a pasture. Sorry, Iโm just trying to cleanse the palette.
We already know Marcel is crooked, so itโs not that far a leap to think that he could also be on Heather Armstrongโs payroll. If he knows that Heather is the Impaler, then Marcel would also know that working with Heather puts him in direct conflict with Joey. What I canโt decide is if Marcel would risk Joeyโs wrath. I suppose itโs possible that Marcel doesnโt know the identity of the Impaler โ just that he does โhisโ bidding.
Atwitter Over Elon
Now letโs talk about Elon. Heโs not nearly as sketchy as Marcel, but he has been known to exist in that gray area. It seems unlikely that the Chief of Police would be the bad guy. He has ties to the Duprees and has always seemed to go to bat for them.
Until recently.
If you remember, this week when Vernon asked for Elonโs help with making the charges against Smitty go away, Elon pushed back and said that he needed to start putting his own family first. Hmm. That was an interesting response. It seemed out of character to me. Now that got my sudsy, soapy brain working in overdrive.
How did Jacob get the video of Smitty at Uptown? If I remember correctly, Elon gave it to him. And who showed Jacob the paperwork that eventually led to the search of Martin and Smittyโs home? Elon. Who else was present when Smitty was led away to processing? Elon.
What would make Elon do all of these things? I donโt know. The only thing I can think of is that Heather/the Impaler/one of Heatherโs goons threatened to harm Elonโs family. Elonโs past less-than-legal shenanigans were to protect Vernonโs family. That takes me back to the odd statement Elon said about needing to look out for his family. If itโs a choice between helping Smitty and Martin or a Hawthorne, Elon is obviously going to choose blood.
Another Day, Another Mystery: Part Two
If Marcel and Elon are just red herrings, that would mean that someone else filmed the video and sent it to Heather. We really donโt know any of the other police officers and detectives, so thereโs no point in speculating who it might be at this point.
To me, the best choice for drama is having Elon be the one whoโs working with Heather. Heโs not a major character, but Elon is linked to so many characters on the canvas. The fallout would be epic.
There was a moment that got me in my feels. When the Duprees regrouped after Martinโs disastrous press conference, Smitty assumed that they had all gathered to try to figure out how to salvage Martinโs campaign. Thatโs when he was told that they were all there to help him. Yes, itโs 2026 and yes, Maryland is a liberal state, but itโs rare to see that show of support for a gay character on an American soap opera. Moreover, this was supporting the spouse of a family member โ not the family member themselves.
That does make me wonder: where the hell are Smittyโs parents? I know the news is still relatively fresh, but I would think that theyโd have texted or phoned. Maybe they are in another part of the world at the moment where itโs sleepytime. Theyโd better reach out by next week or Iโm done with them.
Did I Unintentionally Uncover A Clue?
Here is something that could be something of a spoiler โ or a big nothing burger. Back on May 23, I made a random post on Twitter promoting this column that asked, โWhere are Smitty’s parents? Shouldn’t they have been at their granddaughter’s debut? Is it possible they have an issue with Martin and Smitty’s relationship? Are they just too busy?โ I didnโt tag any performers โ just the showโs #BeyondtheGates hashtag. Brandon Claybon (Martin Richardson) swooped into the thread and posted a GIF of Jimmy Fallon dancing and the caption, โsecret, secret, Iโve got a secret.โ
Could this be a hint? Beyond the Gates tapes about fiveish months ahead of airdate. So the material that is airing now would have been filmed right around when I made my tweet. Hmmโฆ Look out, Katlock! I’m coming for your sleuthing crown.
Why So Serious?
In and amongst the drama of Smitty getting arrested, there was a bit of levity courtesy of โ who else? โ June and Leslie.
While Naomi and Jacob were trying to have a quiet, uneventful meal at Orphey Geneโs, the leaked video of Smittyโs arrest started making the rounds. June, one hand on her hip and the other holding her mobile phone, stormed over to Naomi and Jacobโs table and promptly let Jacob have it. She asked if he was responsible for โone of my baby daddies being perp walked.โ
Over at the Bowman Hotel, LSD (thatโs Leslie/Sherry/Dana) was giddy from watching the video of Smittyโs arrest. She was so tickled that she needed to share it with her festie (faux bestie) Hayley. At first, Hayley wanted nothing to do with Leslie or the hot, steaming cup of tea that she was serving. Eventually, Hayley came around and also took some delight from watching a member of the Dupree circle fall from grace. Hayley and Leslie cackling and name-calling reminded me a lot of Statler and Waldorf, the two grumpy old men on The Muppet Show.
Later, when Hayley showed up at Orphey Geneโs during Martinโs hastily arranged press conference, Vernon sauntered over to intercept her. Hayley explained that she just wanted to pick up her to-go order, but Vernon didnโt care. Evil Vernon reemerged, told Hayley to go to a drive-thru fast-food joint, and pretty much scared the bejesus out of her. Evil Vernon is scary, but the whole exchange made me chuckle.
Hard Hearted Hayley, The Vamp of the DM-VA
Speaking of Hayley, she had quite the week. In addition to being shooed out of Orphey Geneโs, Hayley had run-ins with Bill, Heather, Vanessa, and Joey. Poor Hayley just canโt seem to catch a break. Letโs break down another bad week in the life of a homewrecking almost-murderer.
Thereโs something about Hayleyโs phone encounter with Bill that felt a little off to me. Is it just me or did it almost seem a little weird about that call. Before Hayley could say a word, Bill jumped in and told her that her divorce settlement had been wired to her account. Hayley tried to say something, but the conversation turned to all of Hayleyโs personal items that had been boxed up and readied for her. Still, Hayley was trying to say something and it wasnโt in her standard sassy attitude. Am I a crazy person or did it almost seem like Hayley had called Bill to wish him happy birthday? Before you say that, yes, I am in fact a crazy person, rewatch the scene.
On top of that, Hayley would later tell Heather that Bill was twice the man Andre was. Hayley no longer had any reason to say anything nice about Bill or defend his masculinity. Soโฆ why would she praise him like that?
Somebodyโs Watching Me
Since I mentioned Heather, it seemed like Heather really wanted to be Hayleyโs friend when she sidled up to her at the bar. Hayley didnโt really want small talk with a stranger and sort of blew Hayley off. Until, that is, Heather let it be known that she knew who Hayley was, and that she knew everything about her. That seemed ominous, but the conversation quickly went back to light and fluffy โ at least on Heatherโs part. Hayley tuned her bar mate out and stared at her mobile phone.
Things took a left turn when Vanessa showed up and nearly started a bar brawl. Like Chelsea before her, I think Vanessa was in over her head on this one. Heather stepped in before any punches landed, but Iโm pretty sure Hayley would have won a physical battle. She won the verbal sparring that served as an appetizer for the almost-main course. Vanessa called Hayley a โskankโ and pretty much told her she could go to hell. Hayley fired back by saying that she never had a pay a man for physical attention. Ouch.
Heatherโs attitude then turned frigid toward Hayley. I donโt think it was the fact that Hayley had been ignoring her. No, I think it had more to do with Heather needing to show that she was Team Vanessa in order to score some points. Had Vanessa not shown up, I think things might have gone very differently.
She Works Hard For the Money
I have to wonder if thatโs how Heather operates. She finds someone in a state of need and then swoops in to trap them. Lia was an upstanding doctor until she was swindled out of her life savings by Lynette Wise. Grayson was a lab tech with a close relationship with his mother. Then, his mom became sick and Grayson needed to find a way to pay for his ailing motherโs medical bills. Hayley had been running a successful con until her plot was exposed. She ended up with ten percent of the payout she expected. Could Heather seize the moment and point Hayley to another mark only to ensnare her in the Impalerโs web of deception? Or is Heather trying to be nice to Hayley so that she can find out whatever dirt Hayley has on Joey?
I got a good laugh out of Heather gushing that she was “sitting across from a real-life criminal mastermind.” Heather gets a lot of witty and clever lines.
Something else that is funny, but not in a funny ha-ha kind of way is that I realized Heather is the new Hayley. Hayley swooped into town to snatch Bill from Dani, kill him, and steal his money. Heather has swooped into town hoping to snatch Andre from Dani. She doesn’t need his money, but Heather has implied that she could harm Dani. You’d think they’d be fast friends considering they are cut from a very similar cloth.
Youโre The Victim. No, Youโre The Victim!
Over the past two weeks, Iโve gone back and forth on who I think might end up the victim in a whodunnit. First, it was Heather. Last week, I thought it might be Hayley. Now Iโve swung back over to Heather. Why the switch? If Hayley gets involved with Heather, she would be another suspect on an already long list of whodunniters.
Of course, Hayley could still end up hacked into pretty little pieces floating on the surface of the Potomac River. At least if Joey has his way. Something that I like about Joey is that he has a certain panache and flair to his murderous deeds. Before threatening to whack Hayley, he compared her to a beautiful landscape painting by Ertel that his friend Trevor Two-Toes used to own. That was the manโs name. I just report the facts as they are delivered to me. He detoured slightly from his story to ask Hayley if she was familiar with the artist. He asked because he said he didnโt know if any of Hayleyโs previous conquests liked art. Joey rejoined his story and explained that Triple T crossed him so he made the man destroy the painting. He concluded with, โ[Itโd] be a shame to destroy two beautiful works of art in one lifetime.โ
Love Bites
The Richardson family tree didnโt just have legal drama, they also had love drama. Nicole, who used to have Richardson attached to her name, was stung by the news that Ted and Shanice were engaged. Tyrell was stunned when Jessica returned to the DMV and said that she wanted him back in her life.
Young Hearts
Iโll start with Tyrell because teenage love is far less layered. Tyrell has been dating forโฆ maybe five minutes. Itโs funny to see that he’s already involved in a love triangle. I feel none of the angst that heโs going through. I kind of view his story as more of a rom com than a drama.
This is the part where I admit that I was wrong. Back in my August 7, 2026, column called โAnalysis Leads to Paralysis,โ I wrote there was โa zero chanceโ that Jessica would decide to โtrade her West Coast college for something in the DMV.โ I dug the hole deeper by suggesting that Jessica might return home after learning that she was pregnant.
Technically, my โzero chanceโ comment dealt specifically with Jessica deciding not to go to California in the first place. And it still hasnโt been proven that she is not pregnant. Soโฆ maybe I am sorta kinda right. But seriously, I did not expect her back on the canvas so soon.
Who will Tyrell choose? I tend to learn more toward Jessica because she was Tyrellโs first love. She was also his first heartbreak, so thereโs that. Maybe heโll come around when Jessica explains that she only broke up with him because she was worried about him making bad decisions to try to continue seeing her.
You Were the Longest Chapter of My Adult Life
His grandmother also made a choice. Hers was that her marriage of however many years was all a lie because Ted cheated on her. Grab your pitchforks and torches because what I say next is not going to be popular. I think that was a terrible decision. Yes, Ted was absolute garbage for turning to another woman when Nicole was going through such a difficult time. I donโt think that Nicole and Tedโs entire marriage was a lie. There was just a whopper of a lie that was carried through their marriage.
I believe that Ted loved Nicole. I donโt think that was a lie. Thereโs been no indication that Ted regularly stepped out on his marriage like Bill did to Dani. Before you race over to social media to zap off angry tweets to @danjkroll, once is more than enough. There has also been no indication that Ted was a bad dad to Martin and Kat. While Ted lied on a daily basis by not admitting his affair, I think the claim that Ted never loved Nicole is a bit overblown.
It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye to Yesterday
On the topic of lies, I think Ted and Nicole are both lying to themselves about not still loving each other. In the same way that I accuse Nicole of overreacting, I think we can all agree that Ted never even tried to save his marriage. He sent a few piddly floral arrangements to Nicole and then holed up in a hotel room for months. By the time Ted showed any signs of wanting Nicole back she and I were both over it. As a result, Nicole pushed through a divorce and no one really had to face their feelings.
Itโs that lack of true resolution that I think hit Nicole so hard. The man who barely lifted a finger to try to piece his marriage back together had moved on with a new woman barely a year later. I donโt believe that Ted loves Shanice. I think Ted knows that he messed up and heโs using Shanice as a stand-in for Nicole โ and thatโs a big mistake. There is no other woman like Nicole Dupree no-longer-Richardson.
Thatโs What Friends, Not Knives, Are For
I loved that Dani was there for Nicole as she worked through her emotions. Itโs been a while since Iโve said this, but as an only child this is what I always imagine having a sibling might be like: a built-in best friend. Soap operas have seen many combinations of siblings over the years โ two brothers, two sisters, one of each. I think that Dani and Nicole might have the most special relationship of any soap siblings Iโve seen.
Nicole wasnโt the only one who didnโt take the news of Ted and Shaniceโs engagement well. There was also Carlton. I donโt think that he so much cared about his best budโs engagement, but he was hit hard by Nicoleโs reaction to it. I think it also served as a reminder that others had found love, but he has not.
Carlton tried to drown his sorrows at Uptown, but he got waylaid by Horny, Homicidal Heather. A little later, she went full-on Benihana on him by slicing open his shirt with a really, really sharp Ginsu knife. I will admit that I laughed when Carlton yelped that the shirt Heather had sliced and diced as โexpensive.โ Sir, you are on your back and Joey Armstrongโs sister is hovering of you with a stabby-stabby stick. The shirt is the least of your concerns.
Beside, Behind, and Beyond The Gates: The Speed Round
Here are some of the thoughts and observations about other things happening on Beyond the Gates.
This Is Why They Don’t Ask Me To Write Beyond the Gates
Earlier in the column I joked that someone could have used a Tide Pod to frame Smitty for murder. While I was being silly, I also conjured up another rejected product placement: Leslie disguises a neurotoxin as a Febreze bottle and an unwitting Nicole takes out half of Fairmont Crest when she tries to freshen up her living room. Pretty sure the kind folks at Procter & Gamble would veto these story ideas with the quickness.
Out of the Mouths of Babes and Bitches
There have been oodles of television shows and movies that featured mean kids bullying other kids. I guess it shouldn’t be a surprise that some snotty kids would also live on Beyond the Gates. After the video of Smitty’s arrest was leaked, a pair of girls from Samantha’s debutant class sashayed up to Samantha and asked, “What’s it like having a crackhead for a mom and a murderer for a dad?”
An old 80s/90s PSA ended with the line, “I learned it by watching you!” That explains where the kids learned how to be so rude, but adults should know better. Anastasia reached back into her old bag of insults to explain why she, Anita, and Vernon needed to split of Tyrell and Chessie. Anastasia “worried” that Tyrell was destined to be a drug addict because of June’s past struggles with substance abuse. She pretty much freaked out as she imagined a world where Tyrell and Chessie had a child of their own who might become an addict.
Swipe Left On Poison
Chelsea signing her father up for an account on a dating app was funny enough, but when Bill realized that all of his potential matches were 80-years old and up, it became even funnier. Chelsea said that older women were perfect because they wouldn’t be able to outrun Bill if they tried to murder him.
In case you’re wondering what Bill wants to do on a date, his profile claims that he likes “exploring new restaurants and coffee spots” with someone who values “good conversation, a sense of humor, and making the most out of everyday moments.”
A Baby Makes Three
In a little real world Beyond the Gates news, Jen Jacob (Ashley Morgan) shared on social media that she and husband Jesse Ruben are expecting their first child. โMom and dad are entering the chat,โ the actress wrote in a caption that accompanied an ultrasound image. The little one is expected to make their debut in March 2027.
Coming Soon to A Fairmont Crest Near You
It looks like some familiar faces will be hitting the DMV next week. Grammy winner, Tony nominee, and former Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kandi Burruss will be making an appearance as Kalista Kilroy. Emmy-winning lifestyle maven Tabitha Brown is also making a stop in the DMV. She will play the role of Tia Allen.
Holy Hoosegow, Batman!
I donโt necessarily want Smitty to go to jail, but poor Lia was shipped off to prison and died there โ and we saw none of it. I am not trying to live out my Oz or The Practice/Boston Legal fantasies through Beyond the Gates, but I do feel like this is one case where having these two sets would make the story more complete. There have been several times now when a courtroom would have worked in story. As for the jailโฆ itโs a soap. People are bound to be arrested. Sooner or later weโre going to need to see a jail cell on screen.
If you ever watched the 1960s Batman series, youโll remember that they always used to ask a series of cliffhanger-inspired questions at the end of episodes. Well, I have my own series of questions, so I guess you can call me BatDan. Will Smitty actually be sent to jail? If so, will we get to see a jail cell? Will the charges against Smitty be dropped before we see an actual courtroom set? None of these questions and more will be answered in this column because this is the end of this week’s column. Be sure to tune in next week… same Dan time, same Dan channel.
Beyond the Gates: Lines of the Week
The Beyond the Gates writing team seems to be having a little too much fun. Here are some of the lines of dialogue that tickled my funny bone or that I found memorable over the past week (and haven’t already mentioned in this column).
โIt feels like every time weโre gonna be okay something more cray-cray than the last cray-cray thing happens..โ
Samantha summing up her life and the timeline that we all seem to be living in.
โI donโt have the flu, Martin. Iโve been charged with a felony.โ
Smitty’s response when Martin gave him a glass of juice to keep his strength up.
โI wish I had never heard of the Impaler.โ
Smitty with the understatement of the year.
โLove doesn’t have a timetable. If it feels right, you just go with it.โ
Ted explaining his engagement. It’s not exactly Keats, but I guess it’s still romantic.

I was so annoyed when Jacob arrested Smitty based solely on the fact that the pills he found hidden in Smitty’s house “looked” like the ones Lia had taken, yet no tests had been done on them yet. I don’t recall Jacob having a background in medicine or pharmaceuticals. The fact that the video of Smitty being arrested at the station was clearly taken by a police officer means that the department should be taking Smitty’s allegations of being set up more seriously, and not only looking into that video, but also the department leak.
I didn’t even consider the fact that the housekeeper could have been paid by Heather to plant those pills in Smitty’s house, but that’s a good theory.
I don’t know about Shonda. She seems very ambitious in the political field and framing her candidate’s husband would not help Martin in any way, and therefore hurt her career.
I definitely don’t think Smitty did it because Heather seems too smug about what’s happening to Smitty, so she’s clearly involved. There’s no way that an investigative reporter and their curiosity would not have checked that purple pouch before giving it to Lia, so I don’t see it being an accident either.
If he’s being blackmailed into it in order to protect Jacob, Elon could definitely be a suspect for both the person who took the video of the police station and who’s helping to frame Smitty. As a seasoned cop, he certainly could break into the Richardsons house without it making it look like it was broken into.
