General Hospital Commentary: Fast Times In Port Charles

General Hospital Commentary: Fast Times In Port Charles

Ferris Bueller was right when he said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” This week, General Hospital took storylines that had been simmering on the back burner and turned up the heat. To high.  It was chaotic, soapy, and at times downright confusing. There’s a lot to unpack, so let’s start with the soap gods sending Brook Lynn and Chase a baby girl.

Last week, Brook Lynn and Chase decided it was time to adopt a baby. Chase’s career is in shambles, he’s foolishly convinced that Michael is guilty of Willow’s crime, and he might be in some legal hot water. There couldn’t be a better time to adopt, so Brook Lynn and Chase went all in.

Fast forward to a couple of evenings later when Chase and Brook Lynn happened to stumble across a heavily pregnant woman who was unconscious on the sidewalk. The young mother regained consciousness and quickly introduced herself as Delilah. Before we knew it, Delilah started having contractions, so off Chase, Brook Lynn, and Delilah went to General Hospital.

A sad turn of events

Of course, Delilah didn’t ask for family, the baby daddy, or provide the hospital with any basic information like her name, address, and insurance card. Nope, Delilah is too busy bonding with her new bestie, Brook Lynn. To no one’s surprise, I’m sure, Delilah died within minutes of giving birth. In the blink of an eye, it was all over.

I don’t know much about CPR on a premature baby, but I can’t imagine it requires a doctor to use both hands for compressions like the doctor did with Delilah’s daughter. That poor infant’s ribs. However, kudos to the prop department because that doll gave me a jolt. I did not expect to see a baby, much less one that looked as realistic as the doll that General Hospital used. Usually, we don’t see babies until they are old enough to hold a bottle.

And baby makes three

Brook Lynn was beside herself when she learned that Delilah had died. It was sad, but Brook Lynn’s reaction was completely overblown. The writing was cringy as Brook Lynn wept and vowed to watch over Delilah’s baby girl. A few minutes later, Brook Lynn and Chase were talking about names for the baby, so it’s clear that they will soon be making arrangements to adopt her. By soon, I mean Monday.

A tantalizing clue that spells trouble

Unfortunately, trouble looms. There was a moment before Delilah was prepped for surgery when the camera zoomed in on a tattoo on the inside of Delilah’s wrist. Obviously, a clue. Is Dawn of Day back in play? Another cult? Is the baby daddy a bad guy that Delilah was running from? Delilah’s purse was found, but there was nothing identifiable inside — according to Nathan. She did claim to be staying at a nearby hotel, but to my knowledge her room hasn’t been located.

I think it was a missed opportunity not to introduce Delilah earlier so that Brook Lynn and Delilah could develop a real friendship or even possibly have Delilah choose Brook Lynn and Chase to adopt her baby before she passed. This rushed storytelling sacrificed drama and instead gave us a painfully predictable plot. We can all see where this is headed. Delilah’s past will come knocking on Brook Lynn and Chase’s door and threaten to break up their happy new family unit. Maybe not tomorrow, but soon. Probably around the time a judge signs off on paperwork.

The cat is finally out of the bag. After months of biting her tongue, Carly confronted Josslyn about working for the WSB and finally learned the truth about why Josslyn joined the spy agency. Carly was horrified to hear that Josslyn, with Jack’s help, had tracked down Cyrus and avenged Dex’s murder. Joss is arguably one of the worst agents I’ve ever seen in action on General Hospital. Not only does she not know how to keep a low profile, but she has learned nothing from the spy business. Joss still sees things in black and white from her own skewed perspective.

Josslyn also continues to vilify Sonny and blame him for Morgan’s tragic death. Sonny isn’t without sin, but he’s a necessary evil. I had hoped that a year of living in shades of gray to maintain her cover, and a fling with Vaughn which led to his reassignment, had matured her. It hasn’t. She’s still playing checkers with chess pieces. So often, Joss comes off as a child pretending to be an adult.

Sonny the sinner

Sonny is bad, but he’s also the first line of defense against all the super villains that have flocked to Port Charles over the past three plus decades. He doesn’t act alone. That’s what Jason is for. Sonny gives orders and Jason carries them out. Yet Josslyn doesn’t appear to have an issue with Jason, other than he ratted her out to Carly. Nor does she have a problem using her connections to Sonny when it suits her. She’s always been quick to ask Jason, Brick, and even Spinelli for help. It’s only Sonny she seems to blame for all the ills of the world including Morgan’s unfortunate demise.

I really wish someone would tell Josslyn that Morgan died because Olivia Jerome had her henchman plant a bomb in Julian’s car, and it was Winston Rudge who detonated it even though Rudge knew Morgan was behind the wheel. Morgan had stolen Julian’s car earlier that night because poor Morgan was manic after Ava tampered with his bipolar medication. Sonny had nothing to do with any of that.

Josslyn is no saint

Josslyn might fancy herself a crusader of justice, but she’s done things too. Bad things. She’s a killer. She hunted Cyrus down and went to his cabin armed and ready to kill him. She can’t plead self-defense because he tried to turn the tables on her. Josslyn wanted vengeance not justice, and she’s very lucky that Jack was there to clean up her mess. No one forced Josslyn to follow the breadcrumbs that he laid out for her. Whenever Josslyn had a choice, she chose the same path that she condemns Sonny for being on.

Why does Josslyn believe she has a right to take out bad guys, but Sonny doesn’t? Sonny doesn’t peddle drugs or arm local gangs with guns. He gives generously to the poor and has built a bunch of wings at General Hospital. We don’t know what Sonny and Jason’s illegal activities are, but we do know that they keep the bad elements out of Port Charles. The drug pushers, arms dealers like Alcazar and the Ruiz brothers, rival mobsters like the Zaccharas and Smiths, Russians such as Karpov, and an assortment of villains including Faith Roscoe, The Balkan, and Helena Cassadine.

Sonny’s associates

What really burns my bacon is how Josslyn seems to give people like Jason, Brick, and Spinelli a free pass. Brick has been known to pick up a gun and provide Sonny and Jason with back up, and Spinelli does tech support when needed. Instead, she paints Jason as a victim who was manipulated by Sonny at a time when Jason was vulnerable. However, I watched back then, so I know that Jason made his own choices. He wanted to learn the ropes of Sonny’s world because Jason thrived as an enforcer. It suited him perfectly and he had zero regrets. I don’t see Josslyn talking about taking Jason down.

Life lessons

It’s for that reason that I can’t take Josslyn seriously. She sounds like a petulant child to me. I’ve also noticed that she never points that same energy in Jerry Jacks’ direction. Her uncle has repeatedly tried to murder countless innocent people in Port Charles and has done some truly heinous things in the name of world domination and money, yet crickets from Josslyn. It’s all about Sonny and only Sonny.

Josslyn is overdue for a much-needed life lesson. Sonny has always loved Josslyn and wanted nothing but the very best for her. No doubt he’s messy, but he’s also loyal and protective. I want Josslyn to understand that her desire to lock Sonny up would devastate many of the people she loves including Donna and Avery. Is she willing to risk losing them for the satisfaction of seeing Sonny go to prison?

In a perfect world, Sonny retires and Josslyn is left feeling bitter because she can’t fulfill her mission. It would serve her right. But this is General Hospital, and that wouldn’t be very soapy.

The stork is going to be busy at General Hospital. It seems Portia isn’t the only lady in Curtis’ life who is pregnant. Jordan might be with child too.

Nothing is more absurd to me than the idea that Jordan, a woman with one working kidney, would be lackadaisical about birth control. Kristina? Absolutely. Lulu, possibly. But Jordan? No way. Jordan is way too smart and responsible to be so careless. Pregnancy at Jordan’s age already comes with risks, but being a transplant recipient makes it that much more perilous. Especially with kidneys because the rejection rate for kidneys is 50% at five years. Jordan got her kidney from Ryan Chamberlain in June 2019.

It was hard enough to believe that Portia, a doctor, would forget to use protection with a new lover, especially when she was still intimate with her husband, but Portia was under a lot of stress at the time and was not thinking clearly. Jordan doesn’t have that excuse.

A recipe for disaster

Nothing good ever comes from two women being pregnant on a soap, especially when both women are pregnant by the same man. I don’t know what’s going to happen, but it’s almost a certainty that someone is going to be in trouble in one fashion or another.

Portia is further along than Jordan, so a baby swap is unlikely. However, there could still be a paternity twist in the works. Did Portia get her hands on the paternity results before Britt got them? Will Porita’s baby need stem cells from Jordan’s baby? Something similar happened when Kristina was a baby and Sam was pregnant with her first daughter.

Until then, Portia is happily living her best life for the first time in a long time. She didn’t lose her job or go to jail, Curtis gave her the house she loves, and she doesn’t have to live in fear.

Then there’s Isaiah. Loyal, protective, devoted Isaiah. Ever since Portia and Isaiah hooked up, Isaiah has been there for Portia. He’s been her rock, given her shelter when she needed it, and he’s even fought a couple of battles for her. Recently, he facilitated a reconciliation between Portia and Trina.

Life is good for Portia — or is it?

Too good to be true

On the surface, Isaiah is perfect. When he learned that he wasn’t the baby’s father, he was hurt but he remained determined to build a life with Portia. Isaiah had hoped it would be in his recently refurbished cabin, but Portia was never about that life. It was a nice getaway, but Portia likes her luxuries. Her home is a testament to that. Unlike Wyndemere, it’s flawlessly decorated. Elegant, fresh, and rich. Isaiah looked like a fish out of water standing in her living room.

Isaiah pretended to be happy for Portia, but it didn’t feel sincere. He immediately questioned where he fit in her life and home. He only seemed to perk up once he realized that she wasn’t cutting him loose. Maybe it’s because we know next to nothing about Isaiah, but I find myself constantly questioning his intentions. Is he a good change for Portia, or is he too good to be true? I honestly don’t know. He seems like a genuinely nice guy, but then he turns around and crosses boundaries that he shouldn’t.

Lulu knows a thing or two about crossing boundaries. It seems like suddenly, she and Nathan just can’t stay apart, and they are fighting everyone around them about an attraction that seems to have developed out of thin air. Things are moving at lightning speed between them too, which partly accounts for why I don’t see any chemistry between Nathan and Lulu. There was no build up here. One day Nathan and Lulu were commiserating about feeling like outsiders and the next they were locking lips in a snowstorm.

Lulu seems to think that Maxie choosing Spinelli makes Nathan fair game. Except, no, it doesn’t. Felicia warned Lulu that Lulu can’t have it both ways. If Lulu dates Nathan, then there’s a good chance that Lulu is going to lose her bestie, Maxie. That point was driven home during Friday’s episode when Lulu paid Maxie a visit at Deception and confessed her secret to Maxie.

If looks could kill, Lulu would have been six feet under. It was clear that Maxie sees it as a complete betrayal. Lulu, on the other hand, kept reminding Maxie that Maxie had picked Spinelli. But did she? Maxie made a great point when she said that Nathan was never really free to be with Maxie. Maxie had immediately sensed that something was holding him back, and she was right. It was Lulu.

Make it make sense

I still find it strange that Nathan is suddenly hot for Lulu even though – by his own admission – his memories had picked up where they had left off seven years earlier. If that’s the case, how does a man go from being deeply in love with his soul mate who was pregnant with his child when he “died” to crushing on his wife’s best friend in a matter of months? Not just that, but while his soul mate lingers in a coma.

Not once did Nathan go visit Maxie even though no one would have stopped him. Instead, Lulu and Nathan latched onto each other like barnacles. I’m with Liesl, it makes no sense. The kind of love that Nathan had for Maxie doesn’t just go away because he finds a sympathetic ear.

None of this makes any sense. Not one bit. I’m more convinced than ever that Nathan is not Nathan.

Willow is embracing her villain era. She’s changed her eye makeup, going for a smokey look accented with eyeliner and sharp hooks in the corners of her eyes. She’s also schlepping Drew around like her favorite Birkin bag for photos ops and to keep up the doting wife appearance. Meanwhile, Drew is glaring daggers at her, but no one seems to notice. I hate what Willow is doing to Michael, but I do take pleasure in seeing Drew suffer.

You reap what you sow, and Drew sowed a lot.

Thin ice

Willow is skating on very thin ice. Sidwell is calling the shots and supplying her with the medication needed to keep Drew locked in, but it’s not sustainable. At some point Willow’s house of cards will collapse, and when it does, she is going to be carted off to jail. Drew might not be able to say anything, but his eyes speak volumes. Willow is going to pay for what she’s done to him.

I can’t wait for that showdown. I have a feeling it’s going to be soon. Everything feels like it’s on warp speed.

Some quick thoughts about other things going on in and around Port Charles.

Charlie’s Pub

Kristina invited Michael and Jacinda to the newly rebuilt Charlie’s Pub. Sonny had quietly rebuilt it, and Kristina couldn’t be happier. I’m just surprised that they didn’t change the name. Why not Kristina’s Pub? Regardless, I’m delighted that Kristina is working again. It gives her purpose and a new set for all the folks to hang out in.

Forbidden love

Sonny and Justine did the deed. Not only was Charlie’s Pub reopened, but Sonny made sure to add a love nest/apartment upstairs, which Sonny and Justine christened when they made love for the first time. They agreed that it shouldn’t happen again. Sonny believes it would mark him for death, and Justine knows it will destroy her career. I like Sonny and Justine, so I’m interested to see where this goes.

Carly’s find

I cracked up when Carly found Sidwell’s safe behind that ugly painting and pulled out her phone as if busting into the safe was just a few taps away. Only on a soap. Also, why is Sidwell storing Britt’s medications in the turret room instead of in a more secure location like an office deep in the bowels of the catacombs? Speaking of the catacombs, is that where Cullum hangs (from a rafter) when he’s not making his rounds in Port Charles?

Afternoon delight

Speaking of Carly, things took a turn in her kitchen when she and Valentin came together in a passionate kiss. That led to another more sizzling kiss followed by a trip to the bedroom where they fell on Carly’s bed and Valentin trailed his hot lips down her body. I’ve loved this budding romance since the first spark when Carly gave Valentin shelter. Every Friday episode should end with Carly and Valentin burning up the sheets.

Dante and Elizabeth

Romance is in the air. It’s clear to me that the writers intend to explore a relationship between Dante and Elizabeth. Dante confirmed that when he watched Elizabeth walk away, smiled, and admitted that he intended to follow up on their conversation. I love Ric, but he and Elizabeth should never ever get back together again. It always ended in disaster in large part because Ric’s love for Elizabeth tends to be all-consuming and toxic. Yes, he claims to be a changed man, but that has not really been tested. I suspect it will now.

A silver lining

Despite how heavy-handed the writing was in regard to Delilah’s death I did love the scenes between Britt and Elizabeth in General Hospital’s locker room. It felt authentic. Both Kelly Thiebaud and Becky Herbst are wonderful actresses, and I wouldn’t mind more scenes like that between Britt and Elizabeth.

Happy birthday, Dan J Kroll, Soap Central founder and incredible human being

Today, March 6th, marks Dan J Kroll’s birthday. I’ve known Dan for two-and-a-half decades. He’s been my friend, my mentor, my boss, and emotional support for every one of those years. To say I love the guy would be an understatement. I respect him, admire him, and thank God every day for putting Dan in my life. Dan, (he’s reading this), I hope 2026 is a blessed year, filled with joy and good fortune. No one deserves it more than you. You are the best second husband, Internet father to the kids (it will be in the memoir that he’ll never write), and a generous and loyal friend. Happy Birthday! 🎈🎉🍰

We love reading what other fans have to say about the show, so please scroll down to the Comments section and share your thoughts. It’s at the bottom of this (and every) column.

As annoyed as I am with Chase, I hope he doesn’t die. Chase isn’t a malicious person, and I know that good guy is still in there somewhere. — Ryan

I could see Chase going either way. There’s no question he’s in a precarious position. With no family on the show anymore, he could be removed without affecting many other characters. But when Chase sees the light, he has proven himself to be a committed adversary. So, there may be a chance for him to redeem himself. I would prefer the latter if for no reason other than, we’ve already had Drew turned unrecognizable and Willow diabolical. Do we really want to see another character go down? — Kathie

It might be Dan Kroll’s birthday, but he still found the time to write a Beyond the Gates commentary: The Pungent Odor of Narcissism. The column talks about the big bombshell reveal about the blood and plasma theft ring, that AARP-adjacent basketball game, Hayley’s imploding plot, and more.

Happy viewing,

Liz

Liz, I’m usually on your side, but I can’t agree with your assessment of Sonny. Loyal and protective? What he did to AJ and the way he treated Carly and Michael after Nixon falls seem to contradict that.

    • Liz Masters

He’s loyal and protective to those he loves. What he did to A.J. was horrible, but he went to war with him because of Carly and Michael, and even Jason. To this day, I firmly believe that Sonny shot and killed A.J. because of years of hatred that Carly fostered. Ava just gave him the excuse he needed.

The Nixon Falls stuff was absolutely ridiculous. I hated it all, but he was in love with Nina and didn’t want her going to jail for keeping him hidden in Nixon Falls. Everyone acted badly. Michael filing those charges against Nina, using his influence to get them filed, was wrong too. I understood it, but it was still a stretch, and he knew he was forcing Sonny to choose sides. That’s what it was really about. That and punishing Nina for all the heartache she caused.

      • Ryan

But what about him sleeping with Nina and continually choosing her over Michael? I read your columns from that time period and you ripped into Sonny a lot for that. Also, what about the way he’s acting towards Michael now? Basically telling him to get over the pain that Drew and Willow caused him?

        • Kathie

I think that’s actually good advice on Drew and Willow. Except for the complication of the custody issue and the fact that Sonny–Sonny! who has seen it all!!–is as snowed by Willow as everyone else. Beyond that rather big elephant in the room, it doesn’t do Michael any good to dwell on those two. The best thing for him is to move forward with his life without holding onto a lot of anger.

And on the co-parenting with someone you don’t like, Sonny does back up his words with actions. He has numerous reasons to despise Ava, and she doesn’t have a parenting history that inspires confidence. Yet they have come to a point where they can co-exist for Avery’s sake. Sonny just hasn’t caught on that Michael’s situation is different because his ex is a complete wack job.

    • Kathie

I agree with you about Sonny not being loyal. He talks about loyalty and family first, but he has betrayed pretty much everyone significant in his life at one time or another. Aside from post Nixon falls, greatest hits would be: Lying to Brenda about his mob involvement even as he was an investor in her business and it put her life in danger (she was JUSTIFIED in wearing that wire!). He basically took Carly and Michael from Jason–regardless of whether you think Jason, Carly and Michael should have been a family or not, Sonny sleeping with Carly was a complete betrayal. He cheated on Carly more times than I can remember. Not only did he kill AJ after promising not to, he lied to Michael’s face about it and effectively desecrated AJ’s grave by having sex with his OTHER son’s girlfriend in the Quartermaine crypt.

That being said, I do agree with the general gist of what Liz Masters is saying. I don’t think Sonny is a very good person, but he’s not evil. He is protective and extends his generosity and care beyond just his immediate family. More to the point, there’s a lot of inconsistency and hypocrisy in Josslyn’s attitude towards him. She had no problem with his line of work and did not blame him for what happened to Morgan during the years she lived under Sonny’s roof. When she broke with him, it was over the betrayal with Nina, not because he was a criminal. If she wants to dislike him because he doesn’t walk the walk as far as loyalty goes, that’s fine. But don’t keep piling on other things she didn’t used to care about. I think a lot of the other stuff has to do with Dex, but there’s no clear line between Sonny and what happened to Dex. So I think that part of her anger is misplaced.

There’s also the anger with Sonny while she gives other people a pass. I found her outrage at Carly harboring Valentine borderline hilarious. She knows this isn’t Carly’s first time aiding and abetting, right? Carly does not care about following the law. She takes big risks and doesn’t really care that much about hurting other people outside of her inner circle. If Josslyn is going to be passing judgement on people’s ethics, she should be starting much closer to home even than Jason. Much less Sonny.

Incidentally, another character who annoys me when she gets high and mighty with some people while ignoring the crimes of others is Elizabeth. So by far my favorite scenes of the week were her extending her compassion to Britt. That was very fair of her.

  2. JDF

Great column Liz and great takedown of Joss. She has become nauzeating. Maybe they should hook her up with Chase.

  3. JDF

Never thought that we would see Charlie’s again. Thought it was gone like Jakes’, aka The Floating Rib.

Pregnant woman is found passed out on the ground. She’s found by BLQ and Chase. Did anyone NOT know what was going to happen next? Does anyone not know what’s going to happen to that baby? Who is Deliah anyway? Don’t tell me that Nina had triplets!

Jordan looks great, but she has a thirty year old son so this pregancy story just doesn’t fly. Did she have TJ when she was ten years old?

When Jordan mentioned that she had one kidney it reminded me that Joss has only one kidney. I would think that having only one kidney would preclude her from being a WSB agent. That would disqualify a person from joining the military and being a WSB agent is probably more dangerous.

I wonder who thought that taking Willows’ press photo next to a trussed up, motionless Drew was a good look? That was grotesque.

  4. JDF

I thought that Maxies’ return would throw some doubt on Nathan being Nathan, but at the moment it doesn’t seem like they are going there which continues to be mind boggling. How can there not be a single person who is not suspicious of Nathan?

  5. Ryan

I’m annoyed that it looks like Chase is getting a pass for his actions.

    • SFan

I agree. Chase is guilty of interfering with a police investigation and tampering with evidence. Isn’t that obstruction of justice? He could be arrested and put in prison for that. At the very least he should be fired. This isn’t the first instance of him disobeying orders and putting his career in jeopardy. I remember when he assaulted Valentin and was suspended for at least three months. He was just demoted for investigating Drew’s shooting on his own. Although he didn’t plant the key on Michael’s keyring, he compromised evidence and manipulated Nathan into getting a search warrant for Michael’s keys. He has proven that he can’t be trusted. He flat out lied to Dante that he’d let this go. We’ve seen nothing on Chase facing repercussions for this. This needs to happen and soon.

Random Opinions, which are Mine, jotted down during the Week’s Viewing.
I really thought that they were FINALLY going to bring up that Baseball Bat with Kai’s Fingerprints all over it when Kai was called down to the PCPD Clown Squad.
    But no.
Just some more Questions about Those Damned Keys.
Kai was smart in taking Wallow up on her offer, cuz, you know, Keep Your Enemies Close and all.
Not that he’s capable of doing anything Beneficial.
He’s obviously not THAT smart, otherwise he would have gone to Turner with THE TRUTH and Willow would have been convicted.

    Well Isn’t That Convenient!!
BLQ and Chase just found a Baby!!
Ok, so they stumbled upon a Pregnant Broad in Distress who just happens to look like Nelle.
    Very Contrived.
Fallen Broad (while still lying on the ground); “What Happened?”
Chase: “We found you Near the Park. You were Passed Out on the Ground.”
Fallen Broad: “Well I’m STILL Near the Park on the Ground, Einstein! No wonder y’all were Demoted!”

Jenz is a Bit of a Hoot as well.
You know ya have to admit that Jenz is a “Fun” Villain.
    Not too annoying.
    At least he’s Polite!!

And since when do Lulu and Charlotte just let themselves into Carly’s Kitchen unannounced?
What is wrong with these people?

You know that Tat is going to lead to the Baby’s Father.
You also know that Chase and BLQ are going to try top adopt that Rubber Baby Girl.
    Yep.
Then Tattoo Dad (another Shiloh?) will claim Said Baby, and Shenanigans will Ensue.
    I Predict.
But really, did anyone at GH notice the Dead Broad’s Tattoo?
That’s something both Police AND Medical Professionals should be looking for, especially in a “Jane Doe”, or rather, “Delilah Doe” Situation to assist with ID’ing Said Patient.

Not for Nothin, but years ago Spinelli used to call Carly, “The Valkyrie.”
Since Carly and Val decide to Bump Uglies (Yay Carly! Sleeping With The Enemy as Usual) you know folks will start calling them some Blended Name.
    Why not “ValCarly”?
    Get it?
    “Valkyrie” = “ValCarly”.
    Never Mind.

So, who REALLY wants to hear Tiny Trina Sing at Open Mic Nite?
    Nobody?
    I thought so.
