It doesn’t matter how long a soap character thinks about their decision before making it. The decision invariably creates problems. So why even bother thinking? Just let the drama flow! Have you ever mulled over a decision so long that you ended up not making a decision? I suppose one could argue that not making a decision is actually making a decision, but I will leave the psychoanalysis to Nicole Dupree.
I often feel like I overanalyze things when I watch the soaps. It’s probably the byproduct of having run a soap opera web site for three decades. You need to look for clues in order to stay one step ahead of the competition. Oftentimes, I didn’t even need to look for clues because they were sent to me directly – like casting notices. If a show announces that an actor has been hired for a role, there’s no surprise when that actor shows up playing that role a few weeks down the line.
Then And Now
Now, having been removed from covering the world of soaps for two years, I have a different appreciation for them. I still stumble across spoilers on social media, as I am sure we all do from time to time. But for me, not knowing what’s about to happen has made my daytime viewing a lot like my primetime and streaming viewing. I can watch and formulate my own ideas about what might be about to happen. I am still pretty good at predicting what will happen when I watch a show (daytime, primetime, and otherwise), but not always.
For example, I long suspected that Nicole would choose Kial as her one and only. On the flip side, while I was certain someone would die in the “red market” story, Derek wasn’t on my top ten list of likely victims.
The same can be true of the characters on the shows we watch. Some are far more astute (Hi, Kat!) at figuring things out and others (Oh, Jacob…) need far more clues than they should to put two and two together.
An Affair?! No, I’m Just Trying To Kill Someone!
Like Detective Katlock, I love a good mystery. Our paths diverge when it comes to true crime podcasts. Kat loves them and can’t get enough of them. Me? I think they are basically recipes for other criminals-in-waiting to learn how to get away with their dirty deeds.
That said, my interest in the Bill poisoning has suddenly been reignited, mostly because it now seems like just about everyone in town has been roped into the mystery. Watching Chelsea, Dani, Kat, and Naomi put their heads together to try to make sense of Hayley and Randy’s connection was so much fun. They were sooo close to figuring it out, but they were stuck on infidelity and couldn’t quite get over the hump to murder.
Along the way, Jacob, Andre, Mona, Caroline, and even Anita got pulled in. What’s been particularly fun about all of this is that everyone seems to have their own little nugget of doubt about Hayley. Individually, none of these raise the suspicion level. Well, Anita’s bringing up Hayley and Kyle Abbott’s closeness might have. Added all together, though, they form one intense spotlight shining on all the sketchy things that Hayley has done.
Random side note. I just realize that the whole Bill situation is a really a “true crime” situation for Kat and the gang because it’s reality in their real world, but their real world is just fiction to us. I think I just discovered the sound of one hand clapping. Mind blown!
Look What the Kat Dragged In
I’ve said it many times before, but Colby Nixon (Kat Richardson) is such a shining star. If Beyond the Gates were ever to create a spinoff or standalone series based on Kat’s detective-ing, I’d be there on Day One. It was perfect dramedy when Kat wandered into Orphey Gene’s and stumbled upon the Sammy/Randy mystery. First, it was Deanna chatting up Hayley’s supposed side piece. Then, before Kat could process everything, in walked Mona – and she knew Randy, too.
The look on Kat’s face made me laugh. It was a combination of a dozen different emotions. She was intrigued, confused, amused, relieved… and eight other emotions that I won’t bore you with. It was almost as if Kat was questioning how everyone else in town seemed to know the mystery man that she and her family had been chasing.
Till the Wheels Fall Off
One of the highlights of the week was Dani finding Randy at Uptown and telling him that she knew what he and Hayley were up to – and that she was fine with it. Soaps are always at their soapiest when a character says, “I know what you’ve done” and the other character in the scene spills the beans, unaware that the first character was talking about something else entirely.
Randy managed to keep his cool, though, it was pretty clear that he was initially worried that the jig was up. Even when he breathed a sigh of relief after finding out that Dani believed he was having an affair with Hayley, he knew he wasn’t completely off the hook because he had now been tied to Hayley in a way that went above and beyond the role of “Good Samaritan.”
There is still a little bit of a mystery surrounding whether or not Bill and Hayley have some sort of prenuptial agreement. It’s funny because I saw fans on social media debating this long before it popped up on the show. It seems like a given that Bill would have some sort of legal protection in place. He’s a top lawyer, after all. Even the most brilliant people do dumb things, so I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility that Bill was thinking with his penis and didn’t craft a prenup.
While not a legally binding agreement, we did learn that Hayley and Randy are planning to evenly split the $10 million that Hayley will get when Bill croaks. You might find this next statement a little strange, but I honestly didn’t think that they’d be splitting it 50/50. I don’t know what I thought the split would be, but it definitely wasn’t this.
Wee-Bill Wobbled and He Did Fall Down
It might not matter in the end if Bill’s latest medical crisis ends up being his last one. The week concluded with Bill taking another fall. I know we are supposed to assume that Hayley’s bosom poison is the reason, but what if it’s something else? No matter what actually felled Bill, I just know Hayley is going to be ticked that she wasn’t around to see Bill collapse.
Since Timon Kyle Durrett (Bill Hamilton) isn’t big on social media, there have been no insta-clues about his future with Beyond the Gates. I’ve been so focused on wondering how Hayley would get out of the mess she’s created for herself that it never occurred to me that she might not have to. If Bill were to meet his maker, Hayley might not have to wiggle out of her con. She could play the grieving widow and have years of future story before someone figured things out.
I can’t imagine that Beyond the Gates would actually kill off one of its more popular leading men, so this is all probably just wasted characters on a web page. Still, in the alternate universe where Mona is the Impaler, I would love to see how things would play out if Hayley really did kill Bill.
Kill Bill or “Kill” Bill?
There is also the possibility that Bill does know what Hayley’s up to and stages his death to expose her. Bill could then gaslight or haunt Hayley to get back at her. That would require a lot of commitment from the show. They’d need to remove Durrett’s image from the opening and be sure not to add his name back into the credits before he shows up on-screen. And since I mentioned screentime, I would not want to see a “Ghost Bill” or any sign of Bill until the show made the big reveal that Bill was not dead.
I am not sure how long the show would need to do that for maximum effect. It would need to be at least a couple of months. If Bill were to “die” next week, I’d be fine with holding off the reveal until the end of November Sweeps (which, of course, is no longer a thing, but it will always be a thing to me.).
Friends In High (Low?) Places
I don’t know about you, but I was shocked when Bill showed up at the casino because he needed a “friendly ear.” No shade to Joey, but I don’t think his ear – or any other part of his body – is particularly friendly.
I keep waiting for Bill to open up to someone about his suspicions of Hayley. I really want him to be aware that Hayley is up to something. And I agree that Bill’s pride is an issue here, but there’s a difference between not wanting to admit that you’ve been “had” and knowing that you’ve been had. Since Bill and Joey aren’t really close friends and have something of a complicated relationship, Joey wouldn’t be the worst person to open up to. There’d be no judgment on Joey’s part – though I am sure there would be at least a few jokes made. Plus, Joey might have even offered to help Bill “take care of” his problem.
Of course, Bill didn’t reveal any suspicions that he might have had about Hayley. What he did do, though, was ask Joey to keep an eye on his girls in the event that his mystery illness should prove fatal. Joey wasn’t the only one perplexed by the request. Obviously, Bill would want someone to look out for Chelsea and Naomi… but Joey?
Here, Hold My Communion Wine
That wasn’t even the oddest encounter that Joey had this week. Mona showed up in the VIP to play a hand of cards “for Randy’s soul.” The game did not go anywhere near how I expected. I wasn’t sure which way the Beyond the Gates writers were going to take things. Would it be overly tense, with Mona being devastated when Joey pulled an Ace from his sleeve at the last minute? Maybe Joey would go full-on boss and use scare tactics to frighten the little “church lady” away. Nope. Instead, Mona took Joey for quite the stack of casino chips. In keeping with what we know about Mona, she planned to tithe part of her winnings to help the church with some of its programs and missions.
I’ve said repeatedly now much I love seeing Karan Kendrick (Mona Wilson) and this week did nothing to change my desire to see more of her. I also really, really liked the exchange between Mona and Joey. Before anyone even thinks it: No, I am not advocating for Joey and Mona to become a couple. What I do want is for the writers to find more ways for these two characters to share more scenes together.
Making Mimosa Of Bad Situation
There’s another mystery on the canvas that Kat has yet to set her sights on: that bottle of Champagne and what it has to do with Andre’s past. I think enough clues were dropped this week to be able to put the pieces together.
Here’s what we know. The Champagne was sent by someone from Andre’s past who he seems to wish he did not have a past with. That person is now in the Washington, D.C., area and wants to see Andre. What I say in this section is all speculation on my part and is not intended to be any sort of spoiler, but as I always say if you’d prefer not to even have a hint of what might happen, feel free to skip ahead to the next section.
In an odd coincidence, Heather Armstrong decided to fly back from London to the DMV to have dinner with her brother, JoJo. First, Joey doesn’t look like JoJo. Second, the minute that Heather revealed her nickname for Joey, I was typing a tweet that was going to read, “Who is Heather? Boz Scaggs?” Before I could get the tweet done, Heather shared that the nickname was, in fact, inspired by the Armstrong siblings’ musical preferences and the Boz Scaggs song of the same name.
There Are No Coincidences
In a coincidence that was even odder, Heather somehow wandered into Uptown and found Vanessa and Dani with their heads together. Heather immediately recognized supermodel Dani and asked for a selfie with her. Seems innocent enough, right? Wrong! Nothing on the soaps is innocent.
I thought that the Friday cliffhanger this week was going to be Andre receiving the selfie photo on his phone with an accompanying text that said something like, “Look who I ran into today.” While that didn’t happen on Friday, I do expect it to happen soon because I am convinced that Heather is the person who sent Dani and Andre the bottle of Champagne.
While I still strongly dislike the decision to make Heather the Impaler, the reason for Heather’s out-of-the-blue appearance makes more sense if there was some other story brewing for the character. That said, I still think Heather could have been added to the canvas without the need to also make her the Impaler. As I type this, I almost think it would have been better to keep the identity of the Impaler a mystery and simply end the story. It could have been revisited at a later date when a better reveal could have been crafted. And, if the show was intent on making Heather the Impaler, it could have been done at a later date, too, because it seems that Andre already knows that Heather was a bit of a sketchy character.
2-Become-1
It has been interesting to see Nicole traverse this post-marriage dating life. It’s funny how many people were initially scandalized by the idea of a professional woman choosing to date more than one man at a time. To be fair, the telling of the story has been a much more modern version of the torn between two lovers soap saga.
In the past, a way too large share of love triangles has involved an ex-lover that had come back from the dead – usually arriving just in time to stop the “I do” portion of a wedding. Another good chunk was made up by a woman being torn between two brothers. I don’t have my soap abacus handy, but I’m pretty sure that at least 75% of those stories were told on The Bold and the Beautiful.
But here, Nicole went into her relationships with Kial and Carlton at roughly the same time. Neither man was her “main” man and both knew that Nicole was dating someone else. Interestingly, Kial and Carlton were both okay with that – or at least that’s what they’ve both said. I call that “interesting” because men on soaps rarely project the kind of machismo being shown here. They typically toss around ultimatums and whine a lot, just in a lower vocal register. Here, Kial and Carlton both claimed to be okay with Nicole dating someone else because both felt that they were ultimately going to be the man that Nicole chose.
The Choice Was Already Made
And now that I’ve taken a two-paragraph detour, it turns out that Nicole wasn’t really torn between two lovers after all. There was no light bulb moment of epiphany. What there was, though, was a shocking gut punch that I don’t think anyone saw coming. After weeks away tending to some work matters, Carlton returned and wanted to catch up with Nicole. She felt the same, but wanted to get a good night’s sleep first because she was exhausted. Exhausted from having sex all night with Kial.
Fast forward a bit and Kial dropped by to check on Nicole and suddenly she wasn’t quite so tired. No, she was looking forward to spending the night with Bachelor #2 because she had gotten accustomed to having his arms around her at night. Then things got awkward… Carlton saw Nicole leaving with Kial.
The following day, Carlton bumped into a more-rested Nicole and things seemed back on track until Leslie showed up and blew up yet another of Nicole’s relationships. LSD (that’s Leslie/Sherry/Dana for new readers) swooped in and noted that “Kial gets nights and poor Carlton… is relegated to, uh, brekky-breks.”
Ouch.
You can never really know what someone is thinking, so I can’t be too hard on Nicole here. It sounds like Kial is hard enough on her. BUT ANYWAY. I don’t know if Nicole knew that she’d made her choice or if she was somehow in denial about Kial (and Carlton). It seemed to me that she knew she’d made up her mind when Anita told her as much, but maybe she’d hadn’t and just needed to hear someone say it aloud. I’ve known it for some time, so I could have told her long ago.
Rethinking Carlton
It also turned out that Carlton wasn’t quite as okay as he led everyone to believe. In what was one of the more powerful scenes of the week, Carlton talked about how after years of dreaming about what it would be like to have Nicole as his significant other, it was like déjà vu to see her choose to spend her time with another doctor that he worked with.
In past columns I’ve talked about not liking Carlton, or rather being turned off by what I saw as overconfidence. The Orphey Gene’s scenes completely changed my opinion of Carlton, thanks to a really great performance from Robert Christopher Riley (Carlton Fitzgerald). Carlton seemed vulnerable and, dare I say human. Ditto for the scene where Tyrell asked Carlton for dating advice about Jessica. Carlton realized that he was not happy and needed to do what was best for him – even if it broke his heart.
I know that there are a lot of people on social media who are not happy gatekeepers at the moment because they were pulling for Nicole and Carlton to make a go of things. I am hoping that they can see through their disappointment and acknowledge how well acted, written, and directed the breakup scene was. From zooming in on Nicole and Carlton holding each other’s hands and seeing Carlton pull his away to Carlton pledging that he would always be in Nicole’s life, it was a really, really strong scene.
Perhaps I Was A Bit Hasty
In my most recent column, I may have mentioned that I didn’t see Noah posing any trouble to Nicole and Kial’s relationship. I might have spoken typed a little too soon. Now that Leslie has been in Noah’s ear and telling him that both Nicole and Anita are horrible people, I’m not so sure that Noah will be quite as thrilled about his dad’s new woman. Honestly, I am not sure what grown-ass Noah could do to cause trouble.
California Dreamin’
Oh, young love. I did not have a teenage love. And as the only child of an only child, I never had the chance to experience that teenage love firsthand. We’ve known for a few months now that Jessica was planning to break up with Tyrell at the end of the summer. I don’t think we’ve known the degree of attachment that Tyrell has to Jessica.
I guess it shouldn’t be a surprise considering Tyrell and Samantha’s upbringing. While they’ve reunited with their biological mother, I can’t imagine that they’d ever fully get over those feelings of abandonment.
I felt bad for Tyrell when he revealed his plans to fly to Los Angeles every weekend to be with Jessica. It all made perfect sense to him. It might make more sense to me if Tyrell were about a decade older. I’m not sure where he thinks he’s going to get the money to be able to afford a flight from the DMV to LAX that often. I know kids nowadays get some crazy allowances, but not airfare crazy.
… And Then Comes…
In what was an interesting story decision, rather than have Tyrell curl up in the fetal position and cry about his breakup with Jessica, Tyrell became even more insistent that he and Jessica were “end game.” Before you think I am completely poo-pooing teenage love, one of my neighbors – who I also went to high school with – is married to her high school sweetheart and I haven’t been in high school since… well, it’s been at least a few weeks.
I’m worried because Tyrell is one wedding dress and a cake knife away from turning into Alison. Okay, I don’t think he’s quite at that level, but that doesn’t mean that he’s not on the verge of spinning out of control. Will he unenroll from Banneker? Will he go but end up failing his classes?
Jessica is already in a California state of mind, so I don’t foresee her having a change of heart. There’s a zero chance she decides to trade her West Coast college for something in the DMV and I don’t think she’ll suddenly decided that she wants to have a long-distance relationship.
The only thing I can possibly think of that would change things is if Jessica were to find out that she’s pregnant.
Beside, Behind, and Beyond The Gates: The Speed Round
Here are some of the thoughts and observations about other things happening on Beyond the Gates.
A Really Slow 360
It’s been somewhere in the neighborhood of 360 episodes since Beyond the Gates launched and the show has yet to give Vernon a storyline of his own. Instead of being the Leading Male that I know Clifton Davis (Vernon Dupree) could be, he’s been something more of a Supporting Actor. There’s nothing wrong with that. I’m just surprised that he’s had very little in the way of standalone story. I suppose when you are married to someone for so long, your lives do become somewhat intertwined that it’s tough to tell where one ends and the other begins.
Most of Vernon’s recent “highlights” have involved telling Leslie off. This week continued the trend. In spite of disliking Leslie, Vernon has shown remarkable restraint when it comes to Miss LSD, but we might be reaching a breaking point. Vernon blasted Leslie’s constant need to tell everyone that she has money and that she uses it for “good” purposes. When the conversation started to get a little more heated, Vernon wisely chose to walk away – but Leslie wanted to continue the debate.
LSD And Me
Interestingly, a few days later, the shoe was on the other foot. Leslie summoned Ted to a meeting at the country club because she wanted him to wave a magic plastic surgery wand and get rid of Eva’s surgical scar. Ted tried to explain that he could not do that for a variety of reasons. Leslie refused to take Ted at his word and immediately jumped to the conclusion that Ted didn’t care about Eva. Leslie has reached some outlandish conclusions in the past, but this might have been her most ridiculous.
In this scenario it was Leslie who wanted to walk away, but Ted wouldn’t allow it. Before he caught himself, Ted raised his voice and ordered Leslie to sit her behind down. It was one of the few times that Ted has shown that level of anger. I thought it might get Leslie to see the error of her ways, but that was just delusional thinking on my part.
As for Eva and her scar, I am sure that a lot of viewers don’t get it. It’s “just” a scar, right? Not really. “Just” a scar is the scar you get from a sporting injury or weird kitchen mishap. Eva’s scar is a reminder that she nearly lost her life. You could silver lining it, I suppose, as a reminder that she cheated death, but I think that’s easier said than done.
Finding Her Voice
I think we’ve all long suspected that Anita’s next storyline would involve her struggle to regain her singing voice. There have been numerous mentions that the cancer treatments had affected her voice, though we’ve never been told if the side effect was something that would be permanent or not. The idea of a singer losing their gift is heartbreaking and I cannot even begin to imagine what that would do to Anita’s mental health.
Beyond Beyond
Congratulations goes out to Beyond the Gates breakdown writer Jamey Giddens. Jamey was recently announced as one of the new co-head writers for The Young and the Restless. Jamey has also served as an Emmy-winning writer over on Days of our Lives and he’s found success in primetime as well. I’ve said for a long time that Jamey’s love of Y&R would make him the perfect person to script out drama in Genoa City. Thankfully someone at the show finally realized that and he and Dan O’Connor are now hard at work to turn things around at TV’s top-rated soap.
We also learned this week that Jamey also co-wrote one of the two planned All My Children movies for Lifetime. If you know anything about me, you’ll know that my love of AMC is what eventually led to the creation of Soap Central waaaaay back in the 1990s.
Super Speed Round
Does Randy know what really happened to Doug?
I chuckled when Eva and Izaiah both tried to get Noah out of having a meal with Leslie. Ooh, they tried and tried, but he was just not picking up what they were putting down.
I still really like this Naomi versus Tomas story. I’m actually looking forward to seeing more of Tomas!
If you’re wondering what happened to last week’s column and podcast, wonder no more! I decided to take last week off to enjoy a little extended vacation. I wasn’t able to do that when I was in charge over at Soap Central, so the ability to be able to decide that I wanted to spend time doing something else for one week out of the year was… a nice, albeit weird, thing.
Beyond the Gates: Lines of the Week
The Beyond the Gates writing team seems to be having a little too much fun. Here are some of the lines of dialogue that tickled my funny bone or that I found memorable over the past week (and haven’t already mentioned in this column).
“I need hydration and to be fed for this conversation!”
Anita when she learned that her family was speculating about Hayley stepping out on Bill
“She can chew gum and open her legs at the same time.”
Dani on Hayley’s ability to multitask.
“Bill’s little Gizmo turns into a wet Gremlin.”
Dani on Hayley’s ability to be the less-than-sweet bride that Bill knows.
“Wear her all the way out!”
Dani’s advice to Randy, who she believed was carrying on a secret affair with Hayley.
“I’ve seen videos of you walking catwalks in your heyday, heels higher than my monthly Saks bill.”
Vanessa’s response to Dani saying that she clumsily left her sunglasses at Bill’s house.
“Well, if it isn’t trouble in couture.”
Mona’s zinger of a greeting to Kat at Orphey Gene’s.
“Loyalty comes with fine print.”
