My View From Beyond the Gates: You’re My Kind of Toxic

Let’s be clear: soaps are not real life. That’s what makes the villainy, adultery, scheming, and shadiness so much fun. You’re My Kind of Toxic, a Beyond the Gates commentary by Soap Central founder Dan J Kroll for the week ending August 14, 2026.

Summer might be winding down, but things are heating up in and around Fairmont Crest. Dani Dupree is suddenly reclaiming the husband she once threatened to turn into a slice of Swiss cheese. We’ve learned the identity of the person texting taunting messages to Andre Richardson — though we still don’t know how they are connected. Heather Armstrong is suddenly trying to shoehorn her way into brother Joey’s life and he’s not at all happy about it. And then there’s Hayley Hamilton, desperately trying to grasp a $10 million brass ring from a husband that just refuses to die.

I never expected it, but it looks like Hayley Hamilton is on her way to EGOT status. Her performance when she came running off the hospital elevator demanding to see her husband was the most ridiculous, over-the-top, soapy thing Iโ€™ve seen in quite some time. What made it funny is that we, the viewers, knew that Hayley didnโ€™t care a lick about whether or not Bill was alive. But she had to sell her reaction like she did. And boy did she ever. She was ack-ting, baby.I laughed so hard that I needed to rewind the scene and rewatch it because I couldnโ€™t hear any of the dialogue over my cackling.

That wasnโ€™t the only moment of Billโ€™s hospitalization that had me cracking up. The exchange between Dani and Hayley was so juicy. I admit that I am a sucker for all of Dani and Hayleyโ€™s zinger-filled fights. Karla Mosley (Dani Dupree) was in it. She summoned her inner Katharine Hepburn โ€“ and even sounded like her at one point โ€“ to blast Hayley as a โ€œmehโ€ version of her. โ€œYou will never be Dani Dupree! You will never replace me in Billโ€™s heart,โ€ Dani raged before adding the whaaaaaat closer. โ€œI will always be here for my husband!โ€

Can You Please Repeat That?

Iโ€™m sorry, your what? Iโ€™ve never been married (or divorced) so I donโ€™t know how these titles work. Is it like when youโ€™re still referred to as โ€œPresidentโ€ even after youโ€™ve left office? Yeah, yeahโ€ฆ I understand the irony of it all since I am the guy who still refers to himself as โ€œFounder of Soap Centralโ€ even though Iโ€™ve sold the site and it no longer has any resemblance to the one I created. But thatโ€™s a whole chapter in my memoir that Iโ€™ll probably never write.

What I am trying to figure out is why Dani chose to say โ€œmy husband.โ€ Was it an honest slip? Bill was her husband for so long it might just have been an innate response. Was it a sign that Dani is inching toward reuniting with Bill? Or was it, as Dani said, a way to zing Hayley and an illegitimate bride? I suppose it could also be any or all of the above. Iโ€™d hoped weโ€™d get some sort of admission during the very bougie country club intervention, but that didnโ€™t happen. Surprisingly, Dani kept her composure and she remained fortified behind the wall she put up for the entire meal. She even got a couple of zingers in about โ€œall of Nicoleโ€™s menโ€ being on the same team for Martinโ€™s charity basketball tournament.

A Gentle Ribbing

There was an equally good sparring match between Kat and Hayley which had kind of made me want to see them go toe-to-toe in the future. For whatever reason, Bill asked his โ€œfavorite nieceโ€ to smuggle one of Orphey Geneโ€™s barbecue rib sandwiches into the hospital. First, I wasnโ€™t aware that Bill would even think to call up Kat to ask her for a favor. Second, I didnโ€™t think that Kat would answer his call. I guess with the whole hospitalization thing it makes sense that she did. Third, I cannot even fathom why Kat would think it was a good idea to take ribs to a man whose heart had just stopped beating on no less than three occasions.

Nevertheless, UberKat delivered the bag of food to Bill at the hospital. We also need to quickly acknowledge Katโ€™s sunglasses-wearing entrance. You can tell she listens to true crime podcasts because she obviously thought she was a secret agent the way she was sneaking into Billโ€™s hospital room.

But all of that cloak and daggering was for naught. Bill didnโ€™t get to eat the sandwich because his doting wife showed up and told him that he needed to have vegetables instead. That led to a testy exchange between Kat and Hayley and I absolutely loved it. We know Kat is really good at being shady and it was nice to get to see her flex her talent on someone other than Eva.

My favorite exchange was Hayley turning up her nose at Orphey Geneโ€™s food and claiming it was โ€œstinking up the room.โ€ Kat cocked her head to the side and replied, โ€œOhh, gurl. Your perfume handled that.โ€

As much fun as the hospital scenes were, I do need to take some issue with Billโ€™s really quick recovery. Bill looked better after three cardiac arrests and the implantation of a pacemaker than he did on his wedding day. Iโ€™m not sure what I was expecting, but maybe the makeup department could have had him look paler post procedure.

If I am being totally honest, Andre is the one who looks like his heart stopped beating. For most of the time that weโ€™ve known Andre heโ€™s always had a smile planted firmly on his face. Ever since Dani zoomed to Billโ€™s hospital bed and these mystery texts started popping up on his phone, Andre has looked like he lost his best friend. Or, maybe more accurately, that heโ€™s about to lose his best friend.

Letโ€™s start with the Bill issue. If I remember correctly, Andre once downplayed any worries he had about Bill. Whatโ€™s changed? Andre wasnโ€™t at the hospital when Dani referred to Bill as her husband and, to the best of my knowledge, no one has told him about it. Other than racing to Billโ€™s side, Dani hasnโ€™t done anything now that she hasnโ€™t done in the past. Maybe this is a cumulative thing and all of the times Dani has gone to Bill have started to add up and the dam has finally burst.

Orโ€ฆ

Maybe Andre is worried that whatever happened in his past might cause issues. He could very well be okay (or okayish) with Dani constantly being in Billโ€™s orbit, but the added pressure from this mystery person might be amplifying his displeasure. As the week progressed, the texts were more of a cat-and-mouse game. When Andre received the โ€œturn aroundโ€ message, he looked absolutely terrified. The question isโ€ฆ why?

Another Piece of the Puzzle

The week ended with a classic Friday soap cliffhanger. Andre was summoned to the Bowman Hotel by the mystery texter. Andre was skulking around the darkened room like he was in a horror film. When the light flicked on, we got the answer to the โ€œwhyโ€ he was scared. His mystery texter was Heather Armstrong.

So much of this makes absolutely no sense. Or rather, we donโ€™t know any of the details so how Andre and Heather are connected is very much a mystery. I think itโ€™s safe to assume that they had some sort of relationship โ€“ probably sexual. I could be wrong, but considering Andreโ€™s playboy past it isnโ€™t too far of a leap to assume that. From there, everything else is totally unknown.

Do we think Andre realized that Heather was a villainess and thatโ€™s why he deserted her? Or was Heather so heartbroken by Andre hitting and quitting that she turned to a life of crime. Has Andre known or suspected that Heather is the Impaler? If Andre has any inkling to the kind of evildoing that Heather is capable of, that would make his fear a lot of understandable. The way Andre has been acting is more than just being worried that his ex-girlfriendโ€™s back. Heโ€™s given no indication in the past year-and-a-half that he has been pining over a former love. So, I donโ€™t think heโ€™s worried that he will fall back in love with Heather and break up his marriage. No, Andre is definitely afraid of this woman.

Iโ€™ve said it before, but it is worth repeating: Beyond the Gates has a really great roster of recurring characters. First, in case youโ€™re not quite sure what the term โ€œrecurring characterโ€ means, let me offer a bit of an explanation. Any performer that does not have a contract with a soap is considered โ€œrecurring.โ€ Without going too much into detail โ€“ and not all contracts are created equally โ€“ if an actor is on recurring status, the show is not obligated to use that performer. Actors with contracts are typically guaranteed a salary and that they will appear in a certain number of episodes. Those without contracts donโ€™t have those same guarantees.

That does not mean that recurring actors are seldom seen. There have been instances where an actor that was not on contract has been seen more often than those who had a contract. Some actors choose not to be on contract so that they can pursue projects outside of daytime. Others have been taken off contract to allow for more flexibility to focus on being a parent.

Another easy way to know if a soap actor is on contract is to look to see if they appear in the showโ€™s opening credits, though this is not foolproof. Some shows donโ€™t update their credits often and others, like General Hospital, have, in recent years, chosen to include all of the actors that might appear in an episode rather than focusing solely on those with contracts.

Now that thatโ€™s out of the way, letโ€™s get back to talking about Beyond the Gates. There are so many interesting characters whose actors are on recurring status. Iโ€™m talking about June, Mona, Randy, Tyrell and Samantha, Shanice, Jan, and the list goes on. This week, I am adding Caroline Lee to the list.

Caroline, or Change

Iโ€™ve always been interested in Caroline and Billโ€™s connection. Iโ€™ve never suspected that she was one of the women that Bill had an affair with, but Carolineโ€™s devotion to Bill has never been fully explained. Sure, heโ€™s her boss โ€“ but in this day and age itโ€™s not common to see an employee be so tirelessly, unflinchingly committed to the person in charge. Well, outside of politics, I guess.

Finding Bill unconscious in the corridor of the law offices has clearly taken a toll on Caroline. Even after getting news that Bill was doing okay, Caroline was still visibly shaken. Obviously, the ordeal was incredibly scaryโ€ฆ but it just seems like thereโ€™s more to the story.

I giggled with Caroline was less than impressed by the fruit basket that Hayley brought her. I mean, it really did pale in comparison to the spa basket that Naomi had given her. But I lost it when Caroline looked at Hayley’s gift basket and said, “One can never have enoughโ€ฆ fruit.”

Impaler? I Hardly Know Her!

I will also add Heather Armstrong to the list. I’ve been vocal โ€“ possibly to the point of annoyance โ€“ about not liking the reveal that Heather was the Impaler. That aside, Heather is wildly fascinating. She gives coldhearted, twisted bitch, but sheโ€™s not necessarily giving murderous head of a crime syndicate.

It was a brilliant story point to have Heather and Vanessa get โ€œdrunkโ€ and bond in the VIP room of Joeyโ€™s casino. I did not expect for a moment that the little tin bucket that Heather was carrying would eventually come into play as a depository for all the alcohol we thought she drank but really didnโ€™t.

At some point, Beyond the Gates is going to have to revisit the Impaler storyline. We need to find out the how and why of Heather becoming this รผber villain. Weโ€™ve heard that being a shady character runs in the Armstrong family DNA, but there has to be more to the story. As I wondered in the previous section: did Heatherโ€™s metamorphosis into the Impaler happen before, during, or after her โ€œwhatever it wasโ€ with Andre?

Here are some of the thoughts and observations about other things happening on Beyond the Gates.

Would I Lie To You?

My eyes opened very, very wide during Vanessa and Joeyโ€™s talk about Bill Hamilton. Vanessa mentioned that Joey was nothing like Bill because he would never cheat on her. Joey quickly agreed and assured Vanessa that she had nothing to worry about. When Vanessa added that Joey would never lie to her face? Joey quickly changed the subject making sure that he never had to lie to her about lying to her.

Break Up To Make Up

It doesnโ€™t look like an extra week to think over things did Tyrell any good. In fact, it might have made things worse. Tyrell went from going to college and flying to California every weekend to see Jessica to barely leaving his bedroom. His dads even threw an IG-worthy Banneker party for Tyrell, but he was an unenthusiastic participant. Actually, I am not even sure you could call him a participant. My years of soaping are making me think a twist is coming (I mentioned Jessica getting pregnant in last weekโ€™s column), but maybe I am just being overly suspicious. In real life, people really do go away to college and breakup with whoever they are dating. Maybe thatโ€™s what will happen here.

From Side Piece to By Her Side

Nicole and Kial have wasted little time in their newly exclusive relationship. There has been wall-to-hoisted-into-the-air-against-the-wall sex. I had to say, I liked how Kial immediately stepped up to say heโ€™d go to the hospital when Nicole was summoned to help get Dani in check. It could have been seen as presumptuous or overstepping (and some on social media did see if that way), but I saw it as someoneโ€™s partner being there for them.

The Enemy of My Enemy

It was fun to watch Leslie cozy up to Hayley at the hospital. Hayley has repeatedly told LSD where she can go โ€“ oh, thatโ€™s Leslie/Sherry/Dana if youโ€™re a new reader โ€“ but she seemed mostly okay with Leslie sitting with her in the waiting area. I donโ€™t think this is any sort of meeting of the minds. Itโ€™s probably more of Hayley realizing that there was no one else who was going to support her in her fake time of need.

Mr. Smitty Goes To Washington

While we have still yet to meet anyone biologically related to Smitty — and I think Smitty is the only main character whose blood relatives we’ve yet to meet — we did learn a bit about his past. Smitty had a goth phase, though, sadly, no photos were shown. We also learned that he is definitely not a basketball player. There were quite a few gentle ribbings about his sportsball skills.

There was a really funny moment that… well, maybe I am just dirty-minded and saw something that wasn’t there. When Smitty and Martin dropped in on the bougie country club intervention, Nicole praised Martin’s jump shot and ball handling. Immediately after the reference to calls, the camera panned to Smitty who had a very big smile on his face. Watch the scene again and tell me if it was a naughty moment or if I need to be put on a timeout.

The Beyond the Gates writing team seems to be having a little too much fun. Here are some of the lines of dialogue that tickled my funny bone or that I found memorable over the past week (and haven’t already mentioned in this column).

โ€œI am willing to risk jail time for the satisfaction of beating you down.โ€
One of the many zingers Dani hurled at Hayley

โ€œBeautiful babes bitches be jealous of.โ€
The working title for Vanessa’s group chat with Heather and Dani.

โ€œI need food to keep this party going.โ€
Nicole, politely explaining that she’d need to be fed if Kial wanted more sexytimes.

โ€œThereโ€™s a thin and blurry line between love and hate.โ€
Nicole on Dani and Billโ€™s relationship.

โ€œI never speculate, Mrs. Hamilton. I observe.โ€
A thinly veiled warning given to Hayley by Joey.

โ€œThe sister who loves the man I love is my friend.โ€
Vanessa explaining to Joey why she liked Heather.

โ€œHappiness and Bill rarely go together.โ€
Nicole.

โ€œWait a secondโ€ฆ all of Nicole’s men are on the team? What could go wrong?โ€
Dani teasing her sister about Ted, Carlton, and Kial all being on Martin’s basketball team.

I could tell that Heather was faking being drunk while she was with Vanessa, so the reveal of her emptying her drink into the bucket wasn’t surprising. As I said last week, despite Vanessa telling Joey that she believed Joey should trust his sister, Vanessa still seemed uncomfortable around Heather. I feel like getting “drunk” was Heather’s way of getting Vanessa to ease up and finally feel comfortable around her.
