General Hospital Commentary: Heartbreak Hospital

Nina and Portia set a bold plan to take down Drew in motion. Will the ketamine trail lead Mac to them — or someone else? Brook Lynn shared her adoption secret with Tracy. Is Tracy about to uncover where Lois and Gloria hid Gio? There’s heartbreak on the horizon for many in Port Charles. Let’s discuss in a new General Hospital commentary for the week ending May 02, 2025.

It was quite a soapy week on General Hospital. Secrets were shared, trouble was brewed, and storylines were moved. Let’s kick things off with a bold plan that quickly backfired and turned a cad into a victim.

Willow arrived home feeling raw from the sting of Michael’s rejection only to find Drew passed out in bed and an escort in their bedroom. Ouch. I loved it. It was so satisfying to see Willow blindsided like that. Karma is a bitch, and she delivered big time! My only regret is that it was an illusion, so the satisfaction was fleeting. That rat Drew managed to prove he’d been drugged and just like that the two-timer turned into a victim. Grrr.

Michael felt exactly the same way Willow did when he saw that nasty video of her and Drew rolling around the nursery room floor. I wish Willow would have taken a moment to let that sink in and to perhaps finally see how deplorable and hurtful her actions were. We didn’t get that. Willow quickly got the excuse she needed to go back to Drew when a drug test at General Hospital confirmed that Drew had been drugged with ketamine.

I agree with Carly. Why use ketamine? There are other equally effective drugs that are harder to detect. You’d think a doctor like Portia would know that. Looks like Portia is going to have to go back to Drew’s medical file. I’m certain the key to his downfall is there anyway.

Drew was drugged, but he was definitely receptive to Jacinda joining him before the drug kicked in. The ketamine lowered his inhibitions, but those impulses were all Drew. The man we saw at the Savoy doing belly shots was the same jerk who slept with Nina while he was seducing her daughter. He’s just been better at hiding that side of himself from Willow. Not so much with Nina or Carly. He seems to truly believe they both still want him.

Despite the brief appearance of Willow’s sanity and backbone, she quickly crumbled at General Hospital once she learned that Drew had been drugged. When Monday rolls around, I’m certain that she’s going to suspect or possibly accuse Carly of setting Drew up. I’m confident Carly will cover for Nina because Carly’s hands are clean and there’s no evidence against her. Willow will only have her accusations, which amount to a hill of beans in court.

Kai checked into General Hospital for risky experimental surgery to repair his career-ending injury. It doesn’t take a crystal ball to know that this is going to end badly for him. It’s a soap. The odds are not in Kai’s favor.

I find it difficult to have much sympathy for Kai. He went about this in such a reckless manner. Once that carrot was dangled by Drew, Kai was ready to put everything on the line. Anyone who raised objections and reminded Kai that there were no guarantees, were immediately shut down. He’d insist that he’d done the research and was confident that he would be a success story. Kai is a good kid, but he’s an athlete not a med student. How good could his research have been? Certainly not better than Portia’s.

Kai ignored Portia’s warnings, he didn’t talk to his parents, and Curtis’ words of caution fell on deaf ears. He even dismissed Trina’s concerns. When this goes south — and it will — Kai will have only himself to blame. As much as I despise Drew, even I can’t blame him. Yes, he had an ulterior motive for suggesting this surgery, but Drew didn’t force Kai into this.

I hope I’m wrong. I would like nothing more than for Kai to enjoy a full recovery and lead the Port Charles University Tigers to a winning season next year. Unfortunately, that’s just not how it goes on General Hospital. More than likely, Trina is going to be stuck picking up the pieces of Kai’s broken life. Trina doesn’t deserve that after losing Spencer.

Josslyn is on a mission: snag an internship with Professor Dalton. The only problem is that Emma is the frontrunner.

I’m not sure what to make of this storyline. It’s a bit confusing in large part because both Professor Dalton and Emma made their way from the West Coast around the same time. I haven’t seen any indication that Dalton and Emma knew each other prior to arriving in Port Charles, but there are no coincidences on soaps. I’m certain there’s a connection between the incident that landed Emma in hot water at Berkeley and what’s going on now. Somehow, Henry Dalton is in the middle of it all. Also, I’m certain that Dalton’s interest in Emma extends beyond academia.

One interesting theory I saw floating around is that he’s a DVX agent/asset out to recruit Emma. For those who are not familiar with the DVX, it’s the evil rival of the WSB. What DVX stands for is anyone’s guess, but it’s not important. It’s where all the devious villains train. As for Emma, it makes sense that they would want to entice her to join their ranks. Emma’s grandparents are the infamous Robert Scorpio and Anna Devane, and her great-aunt is Alex Marick. Spy games are in Emma’s genes.

However, I can’t see Emma signing up with the DVX unless it was to take it down from the inside. At her core, Emma is a justice warrior.

So, what’s the deal with Professor Dalton (Daniel Goddard)? Is he a bad guy — or a good guy caught up in bad situation? It’s too soon to tell.

What we do know for certain is that the WSB is interested in him, and he’s working on something that involved a small lockbox, which he took to a secure lab at General Hospital. A new weapon of mass destruction? It’s possible. Henry is a world-renowned physicist when he’s not teaching environmental studies at PCU.

I landed in some hot water with one viewer on social media who took offense to my suggestion that Dalton has shown a decidedly unprofessional interest in Emma. I was accused of having malicious intentions and trying to stir up controversy for the sake of controversy, which I found amusing. It’s a soap opera. Controversy is the bread-and-butter of daytime dramas. They certainly don’t need any help from me in that area.

I stand by what I said. It’s not unheard of for a college professor to be attracted to a student. It happens. Less often these days than in the past, but still enough that I know someone who married her college professor. They have 3 kids and are happy. However, I don’t want to see Emma’s first relationship be with a much older man who is in a position of power over her. I have watched Emma since conception grow up to be a beautiful young woman. I want more for her. Luckily, she seems way more interested in Gio than her professor.

Enough with the older guys creeping on younger women. I’m looking at you Cody (Molly), Drew (Willow), and Jason (Sasha). I will concede that Jason isn’t pursuing Sasha, but he’s been known to fall for women who need him to stand in as their baby daddy.

That brings me to Brook Lynn.

Folks, I’m so frustrated with both Chase and Brook Lynn. The minute Brook Lynn realized that Lulu knew about the adoption, Brook Lynn should have come clean to Dante. Lulu was never going to keep that secret for long because Lulu’s loyalty will always be to Dante not Brook Lynn. Brook Lynn and Chase only made matters worse by trying to bully Lulu into remaining silent rather than using the opportunity to bridge a gap and make friends with her. Lulu never went looking for that secret; she stumbled across it by accident.

Despite my annoyance with Brook Lynn, I did love her scenes with Tracy when she told Tracy about the baby. Amanda Setton and Jane Elliot have such wonderful chemistry, and the love their characters have for each other is palpable. You could see by Brook Lynn’s reaction that everything her grandmother said was sheer perfection.

Tracy has her faults, but she loves with all of her heart and soul. She’s going to make Lois and Gloria rue the day they hid Gio from everyone. I almost feel sorry for the two ladies.

I don’t blame Brook Lynn for not telling Dante about the baby when she found out that she was pregnant. She was a teen, and we’ve seen how emotionally stunted Brook Lynn has always been. I blame Lois because she was the adult in the room, and it turns out she’s an exemplary liar and manipulator. A confused teen didn’t stand a chance against Lois and Gloria’s machinations.

I realize Brook Lynn said it was her idea to give the baby up for adoption, but I’m certain that Lois was relieved. I can’t help but wonder if Brook Lynn might have made a different choice if Lois had been supportive of Brook Lynn keeping the baby. It doesn’t matter though because that was then and this is now.

Like it or not, the truth is out and it’s only a matter of time before the whispers reach Dante’s ears. Lulu’s intentions aren’t pure, but she is not the problem. The problem is Brook Lynn’s guilty conscience. She knows that she did Dante dirty and she’s lashing out at Lulu because it’s easier than having a difficult conversation with Dante. Lulu’s article won’t out Brook Lynn’s secret because Lulu would never do that to Dante and Rocco.

Now that Tracy knows, it’s time to tell Dante. I want Brook Lynn to be the one to have that talk with him. Only she can give him the answers to the questions that he’s bound to have. He will be hurt and mad, but I think he will understand. Brook Lynn had been Rocco’s age and faced with a lifechanging predicament. She made the choice that she thought was best for everyone.

I found Jason’s explanation of A.J.’s murder interesting. He said he chose to believe Sonny’s self-serving version, but even so Jason left out some important details. Sonny was furious because he believed that A.J. had murdered Connie. He never gave A.J. an opportunity to explain what Sonny had walked in on. He just fired. Had Sonny given A.J. just 10 seconds to plead his case, Sonny would have learned that Ava had killed Connie, and it was Ava’s initials Connie had written in blood before dying.

It was wonderful seeing Max Gail make an appearance as Mike Corbin following Sonny’s surgery. The minute he popped up on the screen, my husband said, “Oh, here we go” and reached for a box of tissues. He knows me well. I was a weepy mess during Mike and Sonny’s sweet reunion.

Nina and Carly have come such a long way. I loved their scenes this week, and I really hope they build on what they’ve started. Nina is going to need all the friends she can get when her secrets catch up with her.

Whose phone did Drew find under the sofa? I assumed it was Jacinda’s because of the bra, but others think it was his. If it was Jacinda’s phone, Nina is in trouble. Her number will appear in the call log.

I always love getting to read what readers think of not only the column but also the show. So please join in the discussion in the Comments section below the column. Since I am also active on quite a few social media platforms, I also share viewer feedback and comments from there.

“How Lulu could buy a house without a job or money that we know of is beyond me, not to mention that even when one buys a house it is a lengthy process. It doesnโ€™t happen in a day. Oh, and itโ€™s fully furnished. Lulu is also now writing an article for The Banner. Does this mean that weโ€™re going to have to hear โ€œIโ€™M A JOURNALISTโ€ over and over again? Brick has security all over the hospital but no one guarding Sonnyโ€™s room? Gotta love it.” — JDF

“I want Portia gone. She has accumulated a whole stack of lies. Curtis deserves better. As for Alexis, she is embezzling. When found out, she should be permanently disbarred, sent to prison and ordered to get psychiatric care. It will damage if not destroy the practice and I donโ€™t see her friendship with Diane surviving. This is real world projection of course. In Port Charles’ world another wacko stack of lies will be created to cover up the cover up, Kristina, Molly and Alexis will all stop speaking to each other and Alexis will start drinking again.” — MAF

Until next week, friends. And if you are watching Beyond the Gates, check out Dan J Krollโ€™s latest commentary. Itโ€™s calledย Gatecrashers.ย It talks a lot about one of the best episodes of a soap in quite some time.

Happy viewing,

Who brings a thumb drive to the beach? Emma didn’t have her lap top so she must have dropped it off at home. Why would she keep the thumb drive in her pocket other than the writers needed an easy way for Joss to steal it and how would Joss know that Emma would be walking around with it in her pocket?
This Joss as a WSB agent story line just isn’t cutting it and needs to end. Maybe Emma is an agent in training as well and this is a competition.

I disagree with you about Brook Lynn. We do agree that as a teenager she made the right decision for herself. It was a one-night fling with Dante, and I really don’t think she ‘owed’ him the truth. Lulu found out, but it wasn’t ‘by accident’ as you believe. She discovered this because SHE BROKE INTO Martin’s room and read his confidential notes. Lulu is NO innocent here. She committed a crime. Her hubris in confronting Brook Lynn and forcing her to relive this whole painful part of her life was NOT HER business despite knowing this ‘baby’ is Rocco’s half-brother. It was also cruel of Lulu to judge Brook Lynn’s choice not to tell Dante. And although you think Brook Lynn should have immediately told Dante once she was aware Lulu knew, I also disagree. Brook Lynn should never have been pressured by ANYONE, much less Lulu into telling Dante the truth, but Ms. High and Mighty demanded it. And we both know, Lulu deliberately chose adoption as one of the topics for the Lanview editor to choose. She probably knew of the three choices she submitted, adoption would be the most interesting. You don’t think Lulu will tell, but I think Lulu is going to use what she learns in interviewing people to justify telling Dante. What I DO think Brook Lynn did that is wrong is demanding MAXIE choose between being friends with her or Lulu.

    • Noelle

I agree with you 100% on everything here.

She owed him the opportunity to be the one to raise the child if she didn’t want to. She took away his choice, which would not be cool with me if the roles had been reversed.
Technically, she broke the law by claiming the father is unknown and giving the baby up for adoption, even privately. Adoptions have been overturned because the law recognizes that the father has rights too.
Beyond that, I’m not so sure that she did make the right choice for herself. I think she made the choice that was less scary. Had Lois been supportive of her raising the child, she might have made a different choice.
To be clear, I don’t think Lois pressured her to give Gio up for adoption, but I do think she created a safe place in doing do. We shall see how the conversations go in the coming weeks when Brook Lynn finds out that her mother never really gave her grandson up — she just hid him from Brook Lynn. There will be a reckoning for that.
As for Lulu, what I mean is that she did not go looking for that information. She was on the hunt for clues about where Valentin took her daughter. It was illegal, but she was a desperate mother worried about her child. I can’t really hold it against her.
I don’t know about you, but if I saw something not meant for my eyes and it’s about someone I love (like it or not, Lulu does love Dante) I’m not going to be able to turn away.
It’s unfortunate, but Lois created this mess not Lulu. She is the one who went to Martin to seek legal advice about keeping her secret hidden.

Lots of conjecture about Drew. Is he Shiloh in a mask? Is he Shiloh with plastic surgery? Did someone do a memory transfer? I hope the writers don’t go down any of those roads again.
Drew first arrived in Port Charles as Jake Doe, who was supposed to be Jason but he had amnesia after being hit by a car and under going plastic surgery to repair his face. Then, when SB returned as Jason, Jake Doe/Jason became Drew Cain, Jason’s twin brother who was captured by Faison and subjected to a memory transfer of Jason’s post brain injury memories. The personality of the Drew we knew before going missing in the plane crash was largely forged by his time in Port Charles. So, do we really know what Drew was like before being taken by Faison and being subjected to the memory transfer? Maybe we are seeing the Drew Cain that existed before Faison got his hands on him.

    • Kathie

I’m with you on this. We don’t know much about pre-memory transfer Drew. We saw what may have been him when Franco thought he was Drew. That guy was a JERK. Like current Drew, he was cold, self absorbed and perfectly willing to use a clearly disturbed woman for his own gratification. So how much of that was Drew and how much of that was Franco? We don’t know. Just like we don’t know how much of Billy Miller’s Drew was Jason, how much was actual Drew and how much was neither.

    • Liz Masters

Kim Nero is the closest we have to knowing what Drew was like in the past. She described him as near perfect.
We also know about Drew’s history in the military thanks to conversations with Shiloh and flashbacks.
Drew had displayed heroism when he pulled Shiloh out of a Jeep in Afghanistan when it was hit by an IED. Sometime later, Drew found out that Shiloh and a friend of theirs (Tex) had done some illegal stuff with stolen fuel. Tex had confessed everything to Drew right before Tex died. Shiloh tried to bribe Drew by offering Drew a cut — he even pointed out that it would be enough to pay off Kim Nero’s med school — but Drew had refused to take the bribe.
Ultimately, that’s what why Shiloh ambushed Drew and handed him over to Helena. Drew had decided to turn Shiloh in, so it was the only way for Shiloh to silence Drew.
Franco’s version of Drew was not truly Drew any more than Drew’s version of Jason was Jason.
As Jason, Drew chose Sam and Danny over Sonny and Carly. The real Jason has never done that.
Franco’s version of Drew was more gullible than Drew.
I think the memories are transferred, but certain personality traits bleed through.

      • JDF

I recall a scene where Drew expressed bitterness over being the twin that wound up with Betsy Frank while Jason wound up with the Quartermains. That scene might have been with Jason and I think it had something to do with young Drew seeing an article about the young Jason Q. who was obviously a dead ringer for himself. That could explain some of his behavior.

      • Terry Mangnall

I completely agree. The only thing to add was that Drew knew that Jason and the Quartermaine’s were out there. Drew saw a picture of himself when Jason received an award. He then investigated. Drew was upset that Jason had a great life whereas he didn’t. I really don’t think that SEAL Drew would act on that.

Drew’s life changed when Franco pushed him down the stairs to save him. That’s when he was sent into foster care. That had nothing to do with Jason or the Quartermaine’s. This Drew is about revenge on the family that didn’t raise him.

      • Kathie

Kim Nero had a tenuous relationship with reality. I wouldnโ€™t put too much stock in her opinion.

As for the rest, I have tremendous respect and gratitude for people who serve their country in the military. But in GH world, acts of heroism do not preclude someone from being a dirtbag in another situation. Exhibit A would be Sonny. B through the next half of the alphabet are all the people who went from the right side to the dark side to try to take down Sonny.

I LOVED Laura’s spot-on advice to Lulu…despite what Lulu thinks, this is not her story or her life…and LOL to JDF’s comment last week, we got to hear I’M A JOURNALIST! come right out of her mouth this week!

Liz, there’s one thing I disagree with about your comment about Lois. Don’t get me wrong, I think they have Lois acting like such an idiot right now she’s super annoying and bumbling all over the place, but my recollection of what they’ve told us is that when Brook Lynn shared her pregnancy news and her choice about it as a teen is that Lois said she’d support whatever Brook Lynn wanted to do. I don’t want to undercut that Brook Lynn sincerely did what she thought was best back then by implying that she would have made a different (meaning: “right”?) decision if Lois had supported keeping the baby.

As far as age differences, I do think there’s a world of difference between an older college professor in a position of power over a young student and adults in their 30s having a mutual attraction to someone in their 40’s or early 50’s. Just sayin’! I know Molly is a bit younger than that but she’s also an old soul character who has a lot of life experience and if she had a fling with Cody (who definitely vibes younger and fun) it would not offend me…nor would Sasha and Jason. The age difference is actually the thing about Willow and Drew that offends me the LEAST, ha. There is SO much more to hate about this couple!

One thing I’ve hated about the efforts to take down Drew is that they’ve given us potentially juicy and highly entertaining collaborations to do just that (Nina and Carly partnering up, and less interesting but make it something Nina and Portia)…and then they just fizzle. Nina and Carly just give us scenes where they whine about how terrible it is. Portia is a master planner that has Brad under her thumb and got the drugs to Nina but then couldn’t organize herself to make sure the drug test came up nada in her own hospital with Brad as the lab tech? Ugh.

I suppose they are setting it up to all come to a head at the Nurse’s Ball, sigh. In the meantime, things I wish we had more of: Maxie and Spinelli! Mac and Cody! Diane in whatever scenes we can get her in! (And Alexis returning to being a highly intelligent and strategic attorney.) Sasha and Jason (platonic or not!) And more of the teens (LOVED the 2 dads and their boys, wished that had gone on much longer) — I’m actually enjoying the Joss/Vaughn and bring that world together with Emma, Gio, Trina, reminds me of the days when those storylines gave rise to the characters who grew up to be the main storylines in our showQ

  5. Panhandlerann

Who in Emma’s generation would use a thumb drive? They’d put the data in the cloud. (At the university I’m retired from, faculty and staff aren’t even allowed to use thumb drives, and I’m sure students are discouraged from doing so as well.)

    • JDF

Well, I guess Joss can’t steal the contents if it’s in the cloud. Can’t have that!

There seem to be a number of people in the Q mansion who are not being honest about their motivations. They just donโ€™t make sense. Which makes me speculate a lot.

First off thereโ€™s Lois. I donโ€™t know whose life she thinks will be ruined if the truth about Gio comes out. There will be some hurt feelings for sure. But once those are worked out, the new relationships should be a positive for the three principals, the grandparents and Rocco. Maybe Lois means itโ€™s her life that will be ruined. Iโ€™m not going to speculate on how many people she will have angry at her and for how long because it doesnโ€™t matter. Lois should take that hit for whatโ€™s best for her daughter and grandson. I think the introduction of Gloria is interesting because I can understand her thinking the truth will be a disaster better than I can for the others. In her youth, a baby very well could have ruined a young girlโ€™s future. I know Lois, when rational, isnโ€™t going to buy into that for the current age. But if sheโ€™s trying to make difficult decisions and her mother is whispering a certain perspective in her earโ€ฆwell, maybe. Not that that excuses Lois; but Iโ€™d like to have some sort of understanding as to why someone whose hallmark characteristics have been honesty and straightforwardness is going to behave in a way that is completely the opposite.

Brooklyn keeps talking about how she doesnโ€™t want to disrupt her sonโ€™s life, but thatโ€™s not really convincing logic for not telling Dante the truth. Dante is a reasonable guy. If he found his kid, heโ€™s not going to disrupt his life just so he can claim his son. Itโ€™s possible that Brooklyn needs to continue to keep her secret in order to justify it. And yet she told Chase, she told Tracy. What I think sheโ€™s really afraid of is that, if she knows where her son is, she wonโ€™t be able to keep her distance. Same reasons she didnโ€™t hold him after he was born and wanted a closed adoption. Lucky for her, sheโ€™s not going to have to.

In unrelated matters but in the same house, there is also Tracy. I love Jane Elliot and Tracy, but she is often disingenuous. I donโ€™t think she cares that Drew slept with his nephewโ€™s wife. She just doesnโ€™t want this Johnny-come-lately in her family and ELQ. That one I get. What I donโ€™t get is why sheโ€™s willing to be on his side to get rid of Sonny. Donโ€™t make me laugh that this is about AJ. Tracy hated AJ and took great pleasure in making him miserable. I donโ€™t think she really cares about Sonny co-opting Jason or Michael either. Really, taking charge of paying back Sonny for the grief he caused her brother and sister-in-law will make much more sense once Monica dies. Right now Iโ€™m kind of confused.

  8. The ketamine twist really threw meGH Commentary Blog Commentโ€”classic GH misdirect, but it does keep Drew’s redemption arc alive (for now). Iโ€™m curious to see if Mac ends up catching wind of Nina and Portiaโ€™s scheming, especially since theyโ€™re playing a dangerous game. Also, Brook Lynnโ€™s confession to Tracy felt like the calm before a major Gloria/Gio stormโ€”canโ€™t wait to see how that unfolds.

  9. Kam

I actually don’t think Lois pushed Brooklyn into giving her child up for adoption. I’m basing this on the fact that she gave the child to a close friend. This makes me think that even if she wanted to respect her daughter’s right to give him up, Lois definitely wanted to have a tie to her grandson and be part of his life in some way. Otherwise, she would have gone the traditional adoption route and given him to a random yet suitable family.

I am curious as to what the connection is between Emma and Professor Dalton. He doesn’t seem to know her, and while she also doesn’t seem to know him, she seems to at least know OF him or what his research is about, and I think that’s why she wants to be in his class and become his assistant. My guess is one of the things she was protesting back in California, he is connected to it in some way, and she sees this as an opportunity to get in on the inside.

    • Liz Masters

You can push without pushing. By that, I mean Lois could have reinforced to Brook Lynn that adoption was the best option, and that Brook Lynn had made the right decision.
However, did Lois ever tell Brook Lynn keeping the baby was also an option? That Lois would welcome a grandchild and give Brook Lynn the same support if she opted to raise the baby as a single mother?
I hope we get some clarity on that in the coming days when this bombshell drops.

  10. Dann78

Yeah I donโ€™t think what Lois did she kept her grandson safe and loved and itโ€™s all going to work out good for the family itโ€™s why she didnโ€™t tell Ned he had the right to know . And lulu I donโ€™t blame her for wanting to tell Dante Gio could have had a miserable life if strangers adapted him but Lois and lulu are going to be the bad guys here I donโ€™t agree
