General Hospital Commentary: Drew Cain is a royal pain

Drew is stirring up trouble for everyone. Are the writers setting things up for a murder mystery? Is Brook Lynn’s reluctance to adopt going to send Chase into Willow’s arms? Now that Jason and Britt have locked eyes, will we get some answers or more questions. It’s an all-new General Hospital commentary for the week ending August 15, 2025.

Dearest readers, I am done with Drew. I was done with him even before he threatened to have his 15-year-old nephew arrested for putting his little sister on his bike and bringing her to the Quartermaine for a visit. Drew is despicable and irredeemable to me.

If there was a General Hospital murder mystery, the suspect list of people who want Drew dead would be so long! Michael, Jason, Tracy, Alexis, Nina, Carly, Willow, Sonny, Portia, Trina, Curtis, Molly, Kristina, and even the kids, Danny, Wiley, and Scout might be on the suspect list if Drew ended up at the bottom of the Q staircase.

One viewer chastised me for saying this, thinking I was wishing ill will on Cameron Mathison. Not at all! I love Cameron Mathison; itโ€™s Dark Drew I hate! Keep Cameron on by all means, but make Dark Drew be Shiloh, and resurrect the real, kind, hero Drew. Explain that he is being held at the Five Poppies with Britt. Give Drew some reason for becoming so evil and redeem him, but he canโ€™t stay evil forever.

Just like with Peter August before him, the writers have allowed this to drag on too long. When Drew came to see Willow at the hospital this week, like Lucas I was furious with her when she gave Drew the time of day. Just say, โ€œNope!โ€ and keep walking. Do not engage. He broke up your marriage and he lied to you about multiple things for months. His lies and manipulations cost you your children. Be done with him Willow!

Will Drew’s attempt to blackmail backfire on him?

I was thrilled at the end of Fridayโ€™s episode when ADA Turner was at Sonnyโ€™s place having homemade pizza and personally witnessed Drew blackmailing Sonny with the, โ€œDo what I want, or Michael goes to prisonโ€ bit. Of course, she canโ€™t testify on Sonnyโ€™s behalf because sheโ€™s hiding the fact that she is in his home to begin with. But now she will know who Drew really is.

While I envy the people who write for General Hospital, I find myself getting frustrated with their pacing. The last four big returns — Jason, Lucky, Lulu, and now Britt — have had severe timing issues.

Jason came back from the dead, and it was forever until they gave him a scene with Sonny, Liz or Danny. Instead, he got drawn into some dumb plot with Jagger accusing Jason of shooting Dante and trying to murder Sonny. Not to mention having Sam, the former love of Jason’s life, treat him like a stranger instead of her long-lost soulmate.

Un-Lucky in love

Luckyโ€™s highly anticipated return fizzled out because Lucky spent a month in Sidwellโ€™s prison playing poker with the Dread Pirate Robertsโ€™ threat hanging over him, โ€œIโ€™ll most likely kill you in the morning.โ€

It dragged on way to long before Lucky got home. We thought Lucky was coming back to save Lulu, but then Lucky wasnโ€™t a match. Extremely anti-climactic. Of course they used that as a way to kill off Sam, but thatโ€™s a completely different rant. The Davis girls could really use Sam right now, if only she wasnโ€™t dead. After that, Lucky vanished and wasnโ€™t seen for weeks, and when he was, it was to mope around town not knowing what to do with himself.

From soulmates to strangers

Luluโ€™s return is also lackluster because she and Dante still have not reunited and are not even friends right now. When Alexis Haven came on, that โ€œLanteโ€ reunion was the one thing we were anticipating an entire year ago in September of 2024! We are still waiting!

And now, Britt is back, but rather than give us the exciting reunions we hoped for Britt seeing Jason, Dr. O, and her BFF Brad, they have Britt interacting with some snively little creep who is bossing her around at a 5-star resort where sheโ€™s apparently a prisoner?

How can the General Hospital writers continue to blow the good will and anticipation they have built up time and time again? Make a big soapy splash! And over the top dramatic! Make us cry! Make us feel something.

Are any of you old enough to remember the Luke and Laura reunion of 1983? If not, here is what I want. Watching this again made me cry again, decades later.

The nearest we have had to this sort of passion in years is Trina and Spencer, but we canโ€™t have nice things, so now we are stuck with Trina and traitor Kai. (Side note: Aunt Stella, I love you, but donโ€™t try to push your niece on this dude. Kaiโ€™s boss Drew is the one who sent people to harass Aunt Stella over some โ€œfinancial fraudโ€?)

But I digress, I hope the writers speed up the Britt storyline before we are bored to death and no longer care why sheโ€™s there, like โ€œHat Daddyโ€ Marshall before her.

Please make Brittโ€™s reunion with Jason and Dr O. a thing I will still remember and cry about 40 years from now. There are many things you are great at, but reunions is not one of them. Jason and Britt finally locked eyes today, but it appears that before a romantic reunion they will have to dodge bullets.

As to the other guests at Five Poppies, is it just me or was โ€œMrs. Nashโ€ looking a little jealous of โ€œMr. Nashโ€ flirting with Britt? I donโ€™t think that was part of the act. I think Joss has developed genuine feelings for Vaughn, which is a big spy no-no. Vaughn should be thankful Joss didnโ€™t leave when he ordered her to, or heโ€™d probably be dead by now. That is assuming that Joss shot the bad guy and not Vaughn with her wiggly aim.

I am waiting for the day when Carly finds out that her baby is a spy and Jack Brennan recruited her and was sending her baby off to do dangerous things while he was romancing Carly. Laura Wright is going to eat those scenes up; I can feel it in my bones!

Secret Agent Emma

I hope that Emma is also an agent. I donโ€™t even care if sheโ€™s a double agent for the DVX like her grandma was years before. Maybe sheโ€™s not worried about Professor Daltonโ€™s animal testing. Maybe she wants to take his findings to some evil Cassadine third cousin who wants to create people eating robot dinosaurs. Setting Joss and Emma up as rival spies could be fun.

But first, Jack Brennan should focus on discovering that Colette is working with the enemy, whoever that may be. Coletteโ€™s always been a little sketchy and has gone rogue a time or two, so itโ€™s odd that Brennan didnโ€™t notice. Or did he? Is he double crossing her, too?

Iโ€™m also getting bored watching Emmaโ€™s almost boyfriend Gio still not speaking to either of his parents. Nor is he interacting with any of the Qโ€™s or Cerulloโ€™s. Again, with the timing!

We waited so long for the big payoff of Gio discovering that BLQ and Dante were his parents, but then — zilch. Heโ€™s handing out towels by the pool at the Metro Court, and walking a bladder challenged Beagle, but is never given the opportunity to develop a relationship with anyone in his family. It’s so lame.

Giovanni Mazza gave us absolutely stellar scenes at the Nursesโ€™ Ball when Gio overheard the truth about his parents. We know that he has the acting chops to handle deep scenes and hold his own. He would be a powerhouse with Amanda Setton and Dominic Zamprogna. Let him! Letโ€™s open this door and get Gio completely infiltrated into the family!

Hunky Chase wants his family to grow, but BLQ wants to make things right with Gio before she adopts a child. Chase is becoming discouraged and impatient even though logically he understands her reasons. How long will it be until Weepy Willow decides she made a mistake letting Chase go and breaks up another marriage to switch guys again?

Van Hansisโ€™ Lucas was spectacular this week when he told Willow about herself. I loved that he reminded her of all the people who were putting themselves on the line to testify for her to get her kids back while she still makes terrible choices. And Lucas is invested because he loves Wiley as a son. Maybe someday Wiley will go to Brad to ask about his baby years, and everyone will freak out like they are doing to Rocco now.

Will Mollyโ€™s cowboy romance novel get turned into a Hallmark movie starring Cameron Mathison and send Drew to Washington D.C. for a year? Will Scout ask Charlotte for advice on running away from your parents? Is Outback going to pee on Luluโ€™s carpet? Will temp-Maxie ever discover her inner sassiness?

Do the General Hospital writers ever plan to give Jordan a love interest to keep? Will Willow start timing her boo-hoo meltdowns to ensure sheโ€™s on the park bench whenever nearly naked Chase is jogging? Will Brad be there to catch Lucas when Marco invariably teams up with baddie-daddy Jenz Sidwell? What will Sonny do next to impress ADA Turner? Will he take her dress shopping or gambling first when he whisks her off to his private island?

Are Liesl and Laura going to become Grandma coffee buddies? Will Donna start calling ADA Turner Auntie Justine? Will Wiley eat grape popsicles until his whole face is purple? Is Sonnyโ€™s sauce on General Hospital better than Danny Romalottiโ€™s sauce on The Young and the Restless? Will Portia return the dress she only wore for 14 minutes and then balled up in the floor?

Will you also check out Dan J Krollโ€™s latestย Beyond the Gatesย commentary,ย At the end of a fake ass rainbow?

Only tomorrow knows dear readers and I will tune in tomorrow as long as there are tomorrows.

    Lulu is in serious need of a serious smackdown. I do hope that Outback pees on Lulu’s carpet!

    It is so annoying watching Drew run around town ordering town officials to do things like making arrests. He does not have any authority over local matters, yet he seems to think that he is both mayor and police commssioner. Go to DC and learn what a Congressmans’ job actually is.

    Why Britt? Of all the brilliant doctors and scientists on the planet, why do they need Britt? I guess one could say that they have leverage over her because they have medication for her Huntington’s disease, but if her bosses are brilliant enough to develop an effective treatment for Huntington’s, they should be able to do what ever work they have Britt doing.

    The limp wristed way that Joss was holding that gun didn’t exactly inspire confidence that she could actually hit anything that she was aiming at. Joss as a WSB agent keeps losing credibility rather than gaining credibility.

    I’ve had enough of the Curtis-Portia-Jordan triangle. They should both tell Curtis to hit the road.

    Do I detect a bit of “hound dog” in Isaiah?

    • Tamilu

      I can’t quite figure Isaiah out yet. I think he wants Portia for himself.

      • JBJ

        They do seem to be making him overly invested in her personal life. I really don’t know why they couldn’t have just had Isaiah and Jordan sneak around behind Sidwell’s back.

    • Kathie

      Britt being held hostage to do medical work would be right out of the playbooks of either the Cassadines or Jerry Jax. Remember Jerry and later Victor Cassadine did the same thing with Robin, allowing for varying degrees of freedom of choice on her part. Nikolas kidnapped Finn and Anna in order to get Finn to treat Cassandra Pierce–something I always wondered if Victor had organized once we learned he was behind Nikolas’s resurrection from the dead from the beginning. I always thought that was ridiculous. Maybe not for Jerry who got his kicks toying with people. But the Cassadines were always perfectly capable of finding doctors they could pay off, blackmail or manipulate into doing amoral things. I’m not sure why they had to resort to kidnapping.

    I can’t buy the Drew is Shiloh theory. As bad as Drew is, he’s just not like Shiloh. There are moments when he seems almost decent. Very short moments , but moments. By now, we have to assume that he no longer has any of Jason’s memories. If he did, he could easily make trouble for both Sonny and Jason. Maybe he is just 100% Drew now and that’s not a pretty picture.

    • Tamilu

      Agreed. Maybe prison really did turn him dark, but I would hate to see the story go in that direction because I want the kind, generous, selfless Drew back.

    • Kathie

      I know the show toyed with the idea of Billy Miller’s Drew using Jason’s memories against Sonny back when yet another in a long line of DAs was looking to take down Sonny. And Port Charles has its own legal universe. But using transferred memories would not have any credibility in court. There would not be anything you could reference to prove those were accurate. Unless you had corroborating evidence. Not totally out of the question since having Jason’s memories means Drew literally knew where the bodies were buried. But Jason and Sonny have had years to clean up anything Drew would have otherwise known.

  3. Humor Me

    I haven’t read your column yet but just had to write the list of suspects is over 20 characters who have been righteously angered by Drew, or threatened by Drew. He has brought out Natasha Cassadine, who has Helena’s dagger back in her possession, and threatened Jenz Sidwell, who tortures people for funsies. He has sent Willow screaming and given Tracy a new reason for her inner Edward to emerge. Heck, add his daughter to the list, as he is ready to enroll her in the DMV schools with all the Beyond the Gates characters, when she wants to rerturn to PC middleschool.
    And hell hath no fury like NIna scorned….
    Back to reading your treatise for the week….

    • Tamilu

      By the time we get there, the entire town might be on the suspect list. Maybe Monica’s sister will come on to off Drew to avenge the heel he has brought to her sister’s family. LOL

  4. Brittany

    This was the first week where every scene Drew was in, all I could think he just needs to disappear. I don’t need anybody to kill him, or for him to get his comeuppance, he just needs to never been seen or mentioned again. No explanation needed. I believe something is wrong with Drew going back to his time in prison. However if the writers choose to go that route, there are 2 major problems that come with that. One, they have given us no actual indications that there is anything wrong him besides becoming a jerk. At least when he was programmed by Helena in the past we could see the switch. And Drew has been so entirely awful, trying to retcon this so viewers can soften towards Drew is too much to ask. Two, they would have to acknowledge that when Drew was beaten Cyrus was behind it, but I don’t think anyone on screen actually knows Cyrus was responsible. I don’t remember any of that coming out when Cyrus was killed and I guess the only people who could corroborate that at this point would be the people who attacked Drew. Side note, does anyone feel like Cyrus isn’t actually dead? Yeah Joss shot him and it was stated he was dead, but I don’t trust Brennan and for all we know he is sitting in a prison somewhere.

    I hate whatever mess they are doing with Portia/Jordan/Curtis/Isaiah. I have honestly never been able to get behind the Curtis and Portia pairing because I was so upset by how Curtis treated Jordan. Curtis is definitely a do as I say not as I do, and why Jordan, heck even Portia gives him the time of day I will never understand.

    This may delusional but I am becoming a Brante shipper. They have had some really great scenes lately and we all know wherever this Chase/Willow situation is heading is not good. So I support a good cheating storyline since the last one we got (Drew and Willow) has been a total disaster. However, the only downside with that is it would send Lulu into a total spiral and we really don’t need to give her more ammunition to becoming more annoying than she already is

    • Tamilu

      Haha. Your last lines about Lulu are spot on. I thought they were pointing her in Cody’s direction, but now he’s got Ava and Molly both to keep him busy, so I have no clue what they are going to do with Lulu.

  5. Missez Premise

    Hey Kids! Sorry I’m Late, But I worked last night and I don’t know what day it is.

    More Views from the Cornfield, jotted down as I viewed.

    I loved Tracy’s Chat with Cooty.
    I hope he listens to her.
    He won’t.

    Anna keeps talking about Faison.
    Don’t tell me they reinstalled his Brain?
    What about the Huntington’s?

    Agents Barbie and Ken as Newlyweds is Nauseating.
    Seriously, if Joss giggles like a Five Year Old one more time I WILL Vomit.
    And her Maxi Dress is Hideous.

    What Gives with Frau Blรผcher’s Hair?
    Did Wardrobe comb HER Hair with an Eggbeater now??
    She needs to go a few shades darker.
    Way too many Blondes in PC.
    oops! In the next scene her hair is fixed!!!
    She must have passed a Mirror.
    At least someone fixed her hair.
    ~~~
    Perhaps Liesl can take Outback!
    Don’t know what the MC Policy is on Doggos, but I’m sure Olivia could be talked into it.
    Or, like I said before, why don’t they offer Outback a Room in the Q Manse? She and AnnaBelle II or III can be like Lucy and Ethel
    Of course, ShrewLu now wants Frau Blรผcher banned from the Metro Court.
    Why? Because ShrewLu is a SPENCER. She’s also an Alleged JOURNALIST.
    And because the Evil Dr. O was smiling and chatting with a Dog and Rocco and Gio in a Public Place.
    Um, why was Chase at the MCPool for his “Morning Swim” before Work,
    when he lives in a Lakeside Mansion with a Pool??
    Why???
    ~~~~
    Lucas hit the Nail on the Head with Wallow and EwDrew.
    “When I was watching You and Drew earlier, it was like watching an Addict with their Drug of Choice!”
    Exactly.
    The whole time Lucas was trying to get through to Wallow, she had that “Nellish” Look on her face.
    Y ‘All know the Look.

    Then EwDrew storming into the Q’s with Chase.
    Are TPTB trying to turn us against Chase as well??
    Cuz he’s becoming a Major Tool.
    Since when can a Kid’s Brother be arrested for picking her up at Camp??
    That’s NOT Kidnapping, it was a Rescue!!
    Someone PLEASE Kill EwDrew Now.

    Okay, Wallow should be FIRED for striking Lucas.

    ShrewLu’s taking OutBack just to get on Rocco’s Good Side.
    Poor Doggo.
    Wait until Rocco does discover that ShrewLu had Carly evict Grandma O.

    Omg don’t tell me NotMaxi and her Bad Hair are back!!
    Even Cody yelled “Waagh!!” when she entered the MCPool with James.
    At least her Blouse was nice.
    And Well Fitting.
    BLQ, see the Top that NotMaxi is wearing?
    Y’All would look Nice in something like that.

    Some things never do change, do they?
    I see Britta is still going after Unavailable Men.
    Looking forward to Jason getting there.
    If EwDrew doesn’t have him arrested for Breathing near Scout.
    ~~~
    So, that WSB Agent Broad with the Fake French Accent seems to have *lost* her Accent.
    She did gain that AWFUL 1998 Eggbeater Hairdo.
    What’s with that?
    Don’t tell me that Awfulness is Back in Style?
    Cuz it’s NOT a Style.
    It’s Just Stupid.
    ~~~~
    Speaking of Stupid.
    Now EwDrew wants to keep Scout away from Alexis, her Grandmother?
    Did you see the look in Alexis’s Eyes?
    She looked like if that Cassadine Dagger was anywhere nearby it would be Firmly Imbedded in Drew’s Cold, Unfeeling Heart.
    I’m Totally Up for That.

    Speaking of Hair.
    Why is Liz wearing a Wig??
    She definitely is.
    The scene with Liz and Nellow on the stairs, all I could see was the Fake Wig Part in Liz’s hair.
    What’s up with that?
    ~~~~
    Will OutBack be in the opening credits before Alexa Havins?
    Evidently the Doggo is WAY more popular than ShrewLu.
    I just hope the dog doesn’t pick up ShrewLu’s Bad Habits now that she’s adopting her to stay in Rocco’s Favor.
    We definitely need Fleas to Whack EwDrew in the noggin with a Tire Iron like she did to Heiney (Peter August).
    So!
    Questions.
    (Rhetorical at Best.)
    Is Jordan turning to the Dark Side?
    Will Chase fall under Wallow’s Spell and Do BLQ Dirty?
    Will BLQ and Dante end up together after all these years?
    Boy would that drive ShrewLu Crazy or what?
    I think I’d actually enjoy that to no end.
    Is Trina Stupid enough to take Kai back?
    I hope not.
    Does Gannon have the Hots for Porthole?
    Will Alexis stab EwDrew with the Cassadine Dagger?
    Oh I hope she does.
    How stupid was it for Mikey to leave Wiley alone at the table while he went to talk to Tracy?
    Especially with EwDrew and that Slimy Turtle Boyle in the room?
    I absolutely love the suit Justine Turner was wearing on Friday.
    (BLQ, Take Note!!)
    I sure hope she doesn’t Hook Up with Sonny.
    Gross.
    I don’t care how good his Pizza is.
    Gee, does anyone care who Joss shot?
    Neither do I.
    EwDrew Must Die.
  6. CeeGee
    Tamilu, you are so incredibly right about the show dragging out storylines to the point of impatience and sheer boredom for us viewers. I would add to the very good callouts you’ve already made that I am beyond done with the curtis-portia-jordan-isaiah nonsense as well. They just have all of these characters doing endless rinse and repeat, whether it’s to what new depths Drew can sink to, how long and boring they can make a character’s return be, how grating Lulu and Dante are whenever they’re in the same room, how they’re ruining the character of Gio by making him one-dimentionally fixated on being mad, how delusionally self-righteous Kristina is (and how that whole storyline has curdled the character of Alexis)…I could obviously go on but won’t!
    For a brief week or two (around the Nurse’s ball before, during, and after) where it felt like things were finally moving in new and exciting ways. Then it’s been back to the doldrums and boring, repetitive storylines. Sigh
    • Tamilu
      I agree completely. We know the writers are capable of writing exciting storylines, because they do it around sweeps time twice a year. I could use a few more exciting storylines in between the big payoff months though.
  7. Kathie
    Interesting accounting of all the less than exciting returns. Pacing has always been a problem on soap operas so that may be its own issue. I obviously don’t know exactly what happens in casting, but from the outside, what it looks like is that GH has a habit of hiring actors without a clear plan as to what to do with them. There were also the examples of Eva La Rue and the wonderful Avery Pohl who came on with clear purpose, but the show tried to extend their runs beyond that without a good idea as to how to develop them.
    Lulu would be an exception because the show was looking for an actress for that specific role, but from what I’ve read, Drew may have been the other way around. CM has said he wasn’t sure what character he would be playing and even though he might be a recast for Ric Lansing. This may have been the biggest mistake with Drew–hiring an actor and forcing him into a role rather than looking for someone to fill a role they wanted to do something with. Even when Billy Miller was in the role, the show seemed at a loss as to what to do with Drew after Jason came back. With CM, they’ve cycled through different looks for the character, and none have made him compelling or particularly likeable. This is why I think there’s no reason to try to redeem him and Drew must die. Now that we know he’s even making life miserable for his sweet little girl, he’s got to go.
    The fact that an actor will lose his job is an unfortunate result of that, but GH is a business. They can’t keep everyone who is nice person on the show even when their storylines aren’t working. I’m sure Wes Ramsey and Marcus Coloma are very nice men but their characters were intolerable. Charles Shaughnessy, probably nice, but the role he signed on for had a shelf life. Johnny Wachter, Evan Hoffer, that guy who played Rory, all wonderful people I’m sure. I could go on and on. Of all of those, Cameron Mathison is the one I’m least worried about as it seems like he can make a living doing Lifetime movies or hosting game shows.
    Anyway, back to the original point, I’m optimistic about Britt’s return because it seems to be centering her in a storyline that was already going on. So looks like a definite purpose PLUS it gives Jason a storyline where he can be the lead instead of a side character.
    • Tamilu
      Excellent points, Kathie! I completely agree about Eva LaRue and Avery Pohl! Two magnificent actors- Esme was a wonderful villain, but when Spencer left, they didn’t really have another avenue for her. If Spencer ever returns, I predict we will learn that Esme isn’t dead either, and she will come back with a vengeance. But Eva LaRue- she is a wonderful actress who got a bum character and storyline. She went from being a homophobic mom which alienated a large part of the audience, to an accountant at Deception which was boring. They danced around a relationship between her and Sonny, but nothing ever materialized. Like you I am also thrilled about Britt’s return. Kelly Thiebaud and Steve Burton have mad chemistry. Let them be the new Luke and Laura adventure couple. It would be a fun ride!
  8. Kathie
    Surprised not to see anything about the passing on Tristan Rogers in the column. Maybe not enough time between Friday and Saturday for a fitting tribute? Huge part of GH history that man was and what a charmer. I am very grateful for everything he did on the show.
    Seems like since Jackie Zeeman’s passing a couple of years ago, we can’t go longer than two or three months without losing someone else. I don’t remember any other stretches like this. Is that just selective memory?
