General Hospital Commentary: Tricks and Treats

What an exciting week we had. Our General Hospital writers gave us plenty of tricks and treats to kick off Halloween, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a tad disappointed that we didn’t get any costumes. However, we did get lots of soapy goodness, which was a delightful surprise. Trouble is brewing and things are moving quickly as we swing into November sweeps. Letโ€™s kick things off with the man that everyone โ€“ especially viewers โ€“ hate.

Folks, Iโ€™m amazed at how our General Hospital writers keep finding new lows for Drew to conquer. At this point, Drew is walking around twirling his mustache and freely saying the quiet parts out loud. There’s no hiding his evil and treachery. He proudly wears it for all to see. This week, Drew got his grimy paws on Monicaโ€™s treasured home thanks to a little blackmail scheme orchestrated by Martin. Itโ€™s clear that Drew never loved Monica. No loving son would do the things that Drew had done in recent months or talk about his mother in such a cruel and disrespectful way as Drew did during Thursday’s episode.

I’m so happy that Monica had washed her hands of Drew before she died. He was particularly vile as he shared his plans for her home once he took possession of the Quartermaine mansion. Drew vowed to get rid of all the furnishings and quickly turned his venom on Monica. โ€œIโ€™m not going to hassle myself with auction houses and movers and all of that the first night I move in. Iโ€™m just going to create a huge bonfire โ€“ and Iโ€™m going to burn it all. I wonder how long it takes Chippendale to burn. Or maybe weโ€™ll find out that Monica replaced it all with cheap particle board knockoffs,โ€ Drew said in that annoying sing-song tone of his that drips with rancor.

Jason knocking Drew on his keester and marching his twin out of the bar was such a welcome sight. More of that please.

Lickspittleโ€™s master plan

However, it turns out that Drew’s good fortune was courtesy of Martin Grey. It was revealed that Martin had approached Ronnie with his diabolical plan to steal Monica’ stately home months earlier, but Ronnie had refused to go along with it. Unfortunately, Ronnie had a change of heart after meeting Tracy in the crypt. It was sometime after Ronnie had called Martin to let him know that she would help him put Tracy in her place that Martin managed to switch Monicaโ€™s will with the one naming Ronnie the heir. Martin wanted to punish Tracy for tossing him in jail and siccing his ex-wives on him.

While I do understand why Martin hates Tracy, I canโ€™t understand why he punished everyone else. Michael, Ned, Olivia, Brook Lynn, and all the children that live there — including Laura’s grandson — didnโ€™t do anything to Martin. Did it never occur to him that Monica might have had a second copy of the will laying around for her own records? Clearly not. Nor did he consider the possibility that the family might unite, contest the will, and throw everything into probate. To be honest, I still don’t understand why that didn’t happen. It was so weird how everyone readily accepted Ronnie as Monica’s heir.

Martin’s plan was ill-fated and would never have held up under scrutiny. Monicaโ€™s attorney โ€“ retired or not โ€“ could have easily disproven the contents of the will had anyone bothered to ask him about it. At best, Martin risked getting disbarred and breaking his sister’s heart. At worst, he could face jailtime. Hell hath no fury like Tracy on the warpath. She won’t rest until she gets to the bottom of things and heads roll.

Monday can’t get here fast enough.

I did appreciate the wonderfully soapy twist of Monica getting the last word on the matter. Iโ€™m so happy that her real will surfaced because I had begun to worry that the powers that be at General Hospital had lost sight of what this storyline was about — Monica.

I love Erika Slezak. Her scenes with Michael E. Knight were brilliant. Two soap opera powerhouses delivering fantastic performances. The same can be said about Ms. Slezakโ€™s scenes with Jane Elliot. I really wish Ronnie had come to town under different circumstances because I would have liked for Erika to have stayed. Unfortunately, I have no use for Ronnie.

The bad seed

Ronnie dishonored Monicaโ€™s memory by stealing the house from Monicaโ€™s rightful heir, and she compounded her folly by agreeing to sell the house to Drew. Heโ€™s the very last person on earth that Monica would want in her home. It’s why she barred him from it while she was alive. Like Martin, Ronnie didnโ€™t care about the collateral damage as long as Tracy suffered. She didn’t mind that Monica’s loved ones were deceived and cheated of their rightful inheritance. Ronnie’s anger at Tracy was stronger than her love for Monica.

For all of Ronnieโ€™s talk about wanting to know more about her sister through Monicaโ€™s loved ones, she didnโ€™t listen. Had she, Ronnie would know that Monica dearly loved Tracy. Under absolutely no circumstances would Monica have wanted the mansion to end up in Drew’s hands. I’m really hoping that Ronnie does the right thing before Tracy shows up with the will and puts a kibosh on Drew’s plans. Then again, it would be so sweet to see the expression on Drew’s face when Tracy informs him that the sale is illegitimate and promptly tosses him out.

Drew is going to have a terrible Monday. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ

Folks, Iโ€™m so tired of Brittโ€™s attitude. Sheโ€™s cruel, selfish, and someone I just can’t root for. She’s almost as awful as Drew is. The writers arenโ€™t doing Britt — or Kelly Thiebaud — any favors by keeping viewers in the dark about what is driving Britt. Has she truly turned to the dark side or is this all about self-preservation? I simply donโ€™t care anymore. She treats everyone like garbage, and Iโ€™m tired of watching it. If she vanished tomorrow, I wouldn’t miss her. Good riddance.

I have no idea why Jason puts up with Britt either. Their give-and-take relationship is completely one-sided. He gives and she takes. Worse, I believe her lack of transparency is actually endangering people because clearly something big is about to happen. Instead giving people in a position to help fair warning, Britt is choosing to let those she claims to have once loved fall victim to whatever mayhem Faisonโ€™s project will rain down on Port Charles.

The magic serum

Iโ€™ve long suspected that Brittโ€™s Huntingtonโ€™s Disease diagnosis was part of a ruse to lure her into whatever is playing out now. That โ€œserumโ€ sheโ€™s using is obviously a placebo of some sort, and it’s become a huge plot hole in this little saga. Britt is a brilliant doctor. Are we really expected to believe that she never analyzed that serum? That she wouldnโ€™t be able replicate it once it was analyzed or that she didn’t notice she was symptom-free when she first arrived in Port Charles? Even Lucas made that observation, and he wasn’t privy to the serum she’d been taking prior to fleeing the Five Poppies.

Beyond that, it really bothers me that Britt is putting lives at risk โ€“ including Rocco’s โ€“ for her own selfish ends. Shame on her. And yes, everyone is definitely in danger. No good can ever come of anything that involves Faison and cold fusion.

Curtis is right. Portiaโ€™s default is to lie. This week, she did quite a bit of it. Most of it was a lie by omission, but a deception, nonetheless. Portia has confided to a few that sheโ€™s pregnant, but she doesnโ€™t know who the baby daddy is, so she hoped to keep her pregnancy under wraps until she can get a DNA test during the second trimester.

Malarky. From where Iโ€™m sitting (on my comfy sectional sofa), Portia simply doesnโ€™t want to have to fess up to Curtis that sheโ€™s a cheater. That sheโ€™s been guilty of everything that she’s been accusing Curtis and Jordan of doing. Portia is a hypocrite and a liar. She’s also a coward. Unlike Jordan, Portia doesn’t learn from her mistakes.

He loves me, he loves me not

I know viewers were mad that Jordan had shared her suspicion about Portiaโ€™s pregnancy with Curtis, but Iโ€™m not one of them. Jordan owes Portia nothing. They have never been friends, and Portia has been downright hostile to Jordan for the better part of a year all because Portia was jealous.

Jordan had a choice; she could be honest with Curtis or repeat her past mistakes by keeping secrets. She opted for the truth. As I said, Jordan and Portia arenโ€™t friends. Thereโ€™s no reason for Jordan to protect Portia. Yes, Portia should have told Curtis about the baby, but she didnโ€™t. Jordan wanted to be honest with Curtis about why she was turning down his offer to rekindle things. I commend her for that.

It’s hard to feel sorry for Portia when she’s playing the jilted wife, while carrying on a secret affair.

The other man

That brings me to Isaiah. These days, he bears little resemblance to the intelligent, kind, and honorable man we were first introduced to when he first checked into General Hospital. Iโ€™m so disappointed by who Isaiah has become since falling under Portiaโ€™s wicked spell. The way he acts toward Curtis is just so ugly. He’s even worse to Jordan.

I realize that Isaiah doesnโ€™t know heโ€™s sleeping with a fork-tonged viper, but whereโ€™s the shame? Portia is a married woman and his boss! That is all kinds of wrong and inappropriate. I hate how messy Isaiah has become especially since heโ€™s evidently been down this path before and it ended in disaster.

All I see in Portiaโ€™s eyes when she snakes her arms around Isaiah is a woman who is stroking her own ego. Sheโ€™s not being her authentic self with Isaiah any more than she was with Curtis. She likes the way Isaiah sees her โ€“ innocent, mistreated, and above reproach. He only knows her as the brilliant co-chief-of-staff at General Hospital, not the doctor who violated her Hippocratic oath by altering test results to keep a woman in jail or making a risky decision to wake a patient up from a coma so he could testify in court and clear her daughterโ€™s name. Isaiah has no idea that Portia illegally obtained Ketamine and hired an escort to drug a sitting congressman because he was blackmailing her. But he will. Sonner rather than later.

Isaiah is in for quite a rude awakening.

I love Michael, and Jacinda is starting to grow on me. I know sheโ€™s an escort, but itโ€™s not like that makes her a terrible person. I’m sure there’s a story there, so I’m willing to keep an open mind until we hear it. Michaelโ€™s own revered grandmother โ€“ Bobbie โ€“ was once an escort too, and she went on to become the respected head nurse at General Hospital. I love that Jacinda is Team Michael, and I definitely enjoyed how she stood up to Drew. It was a brilliant move on Michaelโ€™s part to give Jacinda a job at Crimson because it will allow Jacinda and Michael to keep tabs on Nina and Drew. Those two definitely need close monitoring.

Ninaโ€™s blind loyalty to Willow isnโ€™t love. Itโ€™s a desperate attempt to earn Willowโ€™s love. She doesnโ€™t care if Willow is guilty of the crime or not, as long as Willow doesnโ€™t go to jail. Time and again, Nina shows what an awful mother she is. A good mother would see that Willow needs psychiatric help and do everything possible to make sure she got it, even if that meant holding Willow accountable for shooting Drew and messing with baby Daisy.

The Usual Suspect

I’m getting pretty tired of everyone acting like Michael is capable of murdering someone in cold blood. Yes, he’s intense, but that doesn’t make someone homicidal.

It really burned my bacon when Sonny had the audacity to tell Michael that Alexis would easily garner the sympathy of a jury by pointing out how Willow had suffered in Shiloh’s cult, lost a child, went through cancer, and so on and so on. Excuse me, Sonny but Michael endured hardships too. He was shot in the head at age ten, spent years in a coma, was brutally raped, was told his son had died, and recently was horrifically burned in an explosion that resulted in Michael spending months in Germany receiving treatment.

The lack of faith in Michael is astounding. It’s another reason that I’m happy Jacinda is Team Michael. Few are. They all see Willow as the victim.

Some quick thoughts about other things going on in and around Port Charles.

I love General Hospitalโ€™s dress code that made it okay for Britt to show up to work looking like sheโ€™s heading to the club in a black mesh top and sports bra. I work in a department store where we have a pretty flexible dress code, but that look would have earned me at least a few points.

Iโ€™m confused. Didnโ€™t Jordan go to work for Sidwell to get the goods on him from the inside? Why arenโ€™t Laura and Jordan discussing that plan anymore? It seems to me that Jordan would be fully aware that Sidwell has a secret partner and that heโ€™s up to some shady stuff, but it feels a bit like the writers have lost that plot.

What an interesting soapy l twist to have Valentin and Carly team up to take Brennan down. However, I hope Carly is ready for the consequences because she might end up taking Josslyn down too. Brennan isnโ€™t the only person who knows that Josslyn killed Cyrus Renault. It was Collette’s job to get rid of the evidence. Even though it was self-defense, thatโ€™s harder to prove when there was a coverup. Just ask Michael.

Does anyone else find it odd that someone packed up Monicaโ€™s things and didnโ€™t think to bring that file with โ€œLast Will and Testament of Monica Quartermaineโ€ on the front to anyoneโ€™s attention? Instead, they stashed the file under a dusty frame of one of Alanโ€™s degrees and put it in a box of Alanโ€™s things.

I’ve enjoyed the little nods to One Life to Live that our General Hospital writers have given us, but my favorite one was when Ronnie walked into Bobbie’s and saw Brennan. “Joey?” Ronnie asked with surprise. IYKYK.

We love reading what other fans have to say about the show, so please scroll down to the Comments section and share your thoughts. Itโ€™s at the bottom of this (and every) column.

“Can I also say as well that I am sick to death of Claudia being used to portray Michael as a violent murderer? Itโ€™s not true.” — Ryan

“Yes! Folks seem to forget that Michael saved both Carly and Joss when he bashed Claudia with that Ax Handle.” — Missez Premise

“Thanks for jogging my memory. Michael was also a teenager at the time and he did not intend to kill Claudia. He was protecting Carly and his baby sister. He hit Claudia one time, it was not a โ€œbrutalโ€ beating.” — JDF

Don’t forget to read Dan J Kroll’s latest Beyond The Gates commentary. The latest column us called “I Have Been Awakened” and it talks about Samantha’s sudden interest in s-e-x, Ted wanting to punch Carlton, and a lot more.

Another great post, Liz! Like you, I am so sick of everyone getting in Michaelโ€™s face and thinking the worst of him.

  2. JDF

I don’t see Isaiah as being under Portia’s spell. He was the same way with Jordan. They have Isaiah behaving like a hormonal teenager. Then we have high horse riding, holier than thou Curtis, buttinsky Jordan and conniving Portia. All are so unlikeable now, why would we care about them? Why is Curtis so worried about Trina? She’s 22 years old, an adult.. she had no trouble moving on from the “father” who raised her.. Taggart.

As suspected, Marty forged Monicas’ will. How he can blackmail Ronnie is a stretch. I think he’s bluffing and Ronnie should know that. Marty can’t expose Ronnie without exposing himself. It is hard to imagine that Ronnie could pull off this fraud from Durham NC by herself.
Of course this will all work out for the Qs. I doubt that TPTB brought in ES to be a villain. She will become an accepted member of the family, thus setting up possible future visits.

I don’t know how Monicas’ will could have gotten into that box. All those boxes were recently packed and surely some were packed by Tracy. That envelope had a pretty big label that said “Monicas’ Will”. Pretty hard for anyone to miss that!

I know there were a lot of story lines going on but did they skip “halloween” so they wouldn’t have to mention it was the anniversary of Sam’s death?

      • JDF

So far they’ve skipped Halloween, but they may still be behind due to pre-emptions during the baseball playoffs. They’ve always been “flexible” with the holidays and they’re not exactly synchronized.

Liz, I’m on your page on every point this week!

I really, really hate the insulting-to-the-viewers turn they have had Martin take. What, TPTB are so enjoying our misery at what they keep shoveling our way with the Drew character, they decided we need two of them? Truly, it’s exhausting and infuriating that our beloved show has lost the difference between a character that we love to hate and one (now two) we just plain don’t want on our screens anymore.

Drew blackmailed Marty into representing him again and Marty has no love for Tracy, but they took that from entertaining sparring and turned it and him into another toxic downer in our lives. In no way is this the same character, Marty would reluctantly but professionally be giving Drew legal counsel to save Stella, but *never* gleefully plotting and egging Drew to even worse impulses.

On the Michael and Jacinda front, I have no issue with her being an escort but just don’t see the chemistry or believable attraction between these two. Once this relationship has served its purpose I hope they part as friends and we move on to something more interesting!

Next, on “The Obvious, The Obnoxious, and The Oblivious”.
Who in the Viewing Audience was not already convinced in their mind that Marty and Ronnie were In Cahoots?
It was Obvious that Tad, er Smarty (Obnoxious) slipped Ronnie (Oblivious) the Mickey.

Who else took a Power Nap during Jordan’s Dinner with Curtis?

Great, now Curtis is confronting Gannon at GH…wait, didn’t he have a Transplant to tend to?

Does ANYONE remember that on Halloween last year, SAM WAS MURDERED? That’s the same night Drillow had sex on the floor of the Quartermaine nursery. There should be ONE scene of Alexsis, Molly, Kristina, Jason, Dante, Danny, Scout and Rocco paying some sort of tribute to her by at least putting flowers on her grave. What about Lulu? Shouldn’t she be honoring the woman who literally gave her life to save Lulu’s? C’mon GH. You can’t forget Sam.

  7. Evaine

Okay, so then that “Joey” thing was nothing to be suspicious about? I never watched whatever that other soap is that the two actors come from, so I immediately assumed it was another of Brennan’s secrets. So is it or is it not? I wish they’d stop pulling that crap.

    • Kathie

Iโ€™m positive thereโ€™s nothing more to that than a nod to the actorโ€™s history. I understand your point about it being confusing

  8. WebberHardyLover

It’s so frustrating when Sonny has talks with Michael and others showing his lack of confidence in Michael’s innocence. Not too long ago, he was convinced that Carly was breaking down while she was going through the hell of Nelle gaslighting her with Morgan’s cologne. Sonny is no prize as a father.

  9. Kam

Last week, I mentioned that I don’t believe Jordan should be getting into Portia’s business and telling Curtis that Porsche is pregnant because it’s not her business to tell. However, when Curtis told Jordan that he wants them to be together and start over, in that regard, I could understand her being honest with Curtis about Portia’s pregnancy. If they were going to start over, she didn’t want to keep secrets anymore, and she thought it was best if he had all the facts before deciding if he wanted to start again with Jordan, or make another go of it with Portia because of the baby.

  10. Brittany

I think a lot of us suspected the will was fake, and Martin’s possible involvement, but I didn’t even expect it to this extent. I get why he went after Tracy, but to have this decision affect so many other people was a huge miscalculation on his part. For his sake, I hope Tracy gets to him first because when Jason gets wind of this he is going to have much bigger problems to deal with. Drew won’t be happy with him either when he learns his one up on the Quartermaines, and specifically Michael, will be null and void.

  11. Michael

I don’t mind Britt being this way. yes she had mellowed out specially towards Jason shortly before her exit, but there’s a reason they advertise it as the britch bis back. and even when she was mellowing she’s always had a sharp tongu and an edge especially when she’s on the defense. she’s obviously hiding a secret hopefully it will be really big and it will make sense as to why she kept quiet and is doing the things she does. It keeps the character interesting. If she has simply come back and jumped into Jason’s arms that would have been boring and played out in a month.

  12. Kathie

I didnโ€™t get that there was supposed to be a comparison between Willowโ€™s and Michaelโ€™s past traumas. I think Sonny had a valid point that Willow could be perceived as sympathetic at trial. Were Michael on trial, his defense lawyer would be welcome to trot out his history. But Michael is not on trial. Alexis just needs to throw around some vague suspicions about him and/or the other suspects to create reasonable doubt. I donโ€™t get why Sonnyโ€™s worried about that either unless he thinks Alexis will hire a PI. Itโ€™s not like Michael isnโ€™t already a suspect.

I am also inclined to give Michaelโ€™s family some leeway in their suspicions until we find out the truth about the shooting. I do not think Michael shot Drew. But I am not sure he didnโ€™t put the gun in Willowโ€™s room. I think thereโ€™s a very good possibility Willow stole the gun, shot Drew then returned the gun to the Qs. Michael could have seen her at Drewโ€™s, realized what happened after the first attempted search warrant at the Qs and moved the gun to Lizโ€™s house before the second warrant. If Willow is guilty, good for him. Ha, I would love that. But Michael has been a bit shifty, and maybe thatโ€™s what his family is reacting to
