General Hospital Commentary: Truth or Consequences

The truth might set you free, but there are always consequences for actions. Good and bad. Willow put the brakes on Drewโ€™s plans. Is it the beginning of the end for them? Even though Cyrus confessed to his crimes, was justice served with his death? Letโ€™s discuss in this weekโ€™s General Hospital commentary for the week ending February 21, 2025.

Folks, I watch soaps because I absolutely love twists and turns. My daughter accuses me of being โ€œextra.โ€ I walk to my own beat, like to zhuzh things up when I go out, and I’m a bit high-strung. Okay, a lot high-strung. I think thatโ€™s why I love soaps. Soap characters tend to be extra.

However, with the good comes the bad, especially on a soap like General Hospital.

Confession is good for the soul, but thatโ€™s not true when you have a dark and evil soul like Cyrus. All that poppycock spouted by Cyrus about releasing Lulu to God and easing the suffering of those poor souls at General Hospital and Turning Woods was nonsensical word salad. As I listened to Cyrus explain his reasons for killing Sam and Dex, I realized that we would never get a satisfactory answer. Cyrus had a twisted mind and a black soul.

Cyrus killed Sam because heโ€™s a killer and thatโ€™s what killers do. All the excuses he made for what he did to the innocent people he murdered were empty words. Cyrus was diabolical and he saw himself not as a hand of God but as someone who was a god. Liz pointed out the fatal flaw in his logic. She reminded him that it had been God’s plan for Lulu to survive the transplant. He promptly dismissed it. In fact, Cyrus became downright combative at the suggestion.

Serial killers keep mementos of their heinous crimes. People of God know better than to commit them.

It took months to get to the truth of Cyrusโ€™ crimes, but justice was served in a matter of hours. Was it the right call? One of my followers on X (formerly Twitter) suggested that it had been a missed opportunity for the writers to give us a murder mystery.

It’s true that there wasnโ€™t a shortage of people who had threatened Cyrus and had motive to kill him. Jason and Dante being at the very top of that list. While I agree that it was a good set up for a whodunit, I wouldnโ€™t have wanted his killer to end up going to jail. Cyrus deserved to die, and no one should pay for that public service.

Jail would have been too good for a man like Cyrus because he wasn’t capable of being rehabilitated. He never was. Keeping him alive might have possibly given him an opportunity to escape and free to wreak more havoc on the good people of Port Charles. Worse, the writers might have been tempted to go down the same ridiculous path that they did Heather Webber. No thank you.

Jeff Kober will be dearly missed, but good riddance to Cyrus Renault.

Viewers got quite a surprise at the start of the week when Guy Wilson temporarily stepped into the role of Lucky Spencer. Jonathan Jackson was back on our screens by the end of the week, but he missed all the action. Literally.

What is with General Hospital sliding in temporary recasts for big scenes lately? They did it when Michael learned about Drew and Willowโ€™s kiss (Robert Adamson temporarily covered for Chad Duell), and now with Lucky and Lizโ€™s first kiss and the showdown with Cyrus. What a buzzkill. In both cases, I felt let down.

Couldnโ€™t they have waited for Jonathan to become available again for those scenes or written around Lucky? The kiss could have waited, in part because Liz was brutally raped in her teens following a Valentineโ€™s Day dance. Lucky was such a big part of her recovery from that awful assault. The kiss between Lucky and Liz would have been far more poignant if it had been between Becky Herbst and Jonathan Jackson. Nothing against Guy Wilson, but part of Lucky and Lizโ€™s magic is the history and chemistry that the actors share.

Note to Liz: Get a doorbell camera or a peephole so you can see who is on your doorstep before opening the door.

I hope the hospital faces several lawsuits for the crimes that Cyrus committed while they conducted their own investigation without alerting the police. Itโ€™s not like Cyrus was able to make himself invisible or find a secret passage into the hospital rooms of his victims. There are cameras all over that hospital, and they should have known within a matter of minutes that the killer was posing as a doctor.

The same goes for the Port Charles Police Department.

I donโ€™t know why the writers insist on making Anna look like the most incompetent person on Earth.

After Cyrus pushed his way into Lizโ€™s home and attempted to kill both Liz and Lucky, he managed to escape. Where was Anna? Was she at the police station organizing and leading a search for him? Setting up a dragnet? Nope, she was at General Hospital sipping coffee with Jordan and questioning Liz. Couldnโ€™t Chase have done that?

It galls me that Anna was able to arrest Jason and hold him for 24 hours, but she couldnโ€™t detain Cyrus while the evidence that Liz gave Anna was processed. Heck, Liz even advised Anna to contact the company that had sent the incriminating syringes and Digitalis to ask for their records. It was as if the idea hadnโ€™t even occurred to Anna.

Josslyn had quite the week, and Jack Brennan played a pivotal role in it.

After shooting Cyrus dead, Josslyn called Jack. He convinced her to let him handle things and get rid of the body rather than call the police. Josslyn agreed to do things Jackโ€™s way because she was certain no one would believe that it was self-defense.

Josslyn did break into Cyrusโ€™ secret hideout, but that didnโ€™t give Cyrus the right to attack her with an axe and chop her to bits. Additionally, Cyrus was a serial killer who was on the run from the law for trying to murder both Lucky and Liz. It would have been incredibly easy to convince any jury — if it even made it that far — of self-defense. Josslyn didn’t know that at the time, so I give her a free pass. She was traumatized and not thinking clearly.

It turns out that those of us who suspected that Jack was considering recruiting Josslyn as a WSB agent were spot on. Jack quickly made Josslyn the offer, but she didnโ€™t readily accept. I have no doubt that Josslyn will. Truthfully, the idea of Josslyn working for the WSB makes much more sense than Josslyn joining the ranks at General Hospital.

Things are also heating up between Jack and Carly. Iโ€™m not sure how I feel about that. The chemistry between Chris McKenna and Laura Wright is completely different than what I saw between Laura and Charles Mesure. Itโ€™s not bad, but the sizzle factor is gone. Can it be recaptured? Iโ€™m not sure, but Iโ€™m willing to give Chris and Laura time to tap into that special mojo that makes a soap couple shine.

Now, letโ€™s talk about Drew and his devoted acolyte Willow.

Drew and Willow are no longer hiding their tawdry relationship. Willow canโ€™t understand why people aren’t happy for them. They are in love. Meanwhile, Drew thinks people have no room to talk. Everyone is a sinner in Drew’s book. He likes to point out the hypocrisy of flawed people judging him and his ladylove. This of course is pure deflection to weasel out of being held accountable for their own rotten behavior.

I donโ€™t disagree that all the Quartermaines have a history of adultery and poor choices. However, that doesnโ€™t mean that they canโ€™t be mad at both Drew and Willow for betraying Michael. The truth is, Drew and Willow did Michael dirty and there are consequences for that.

Lucas and Brad were right. Willow doesnโ€™t look happy. Drew is not her soulmate, and what they share is not the love of a lifetime. Willow doesnโ€™t even know the real Drew. The man who is happy to be in league with a man like Sidwell, and who slept with her mother — repeatedly — while wooing Willow.

Iโ€™m glad that Willow turned down Drewโ€™s invitation to move in with him, but I donโ€™t hold out much hope that she will stick to her guns for long. Drew easily manipulates her. I applaud Willow for finally putting her kids first, but Iโ€™m stunned that she didnโ€™t point out to Drew that he bought the Dawn of Day house. Why would she ever want to live there?

Willow works at General Hospital, so she can easily afford a nice place for her and the kids. She needs to focus on her kids. She also needs to own her choices and face the consequences of her actions. Iโ€™m starting to believe that she clings to her illusions about Drew because deep down inside she knows that heโ€™s not the prince she believed him to be. Rather than admit that she was wrong about everything, she lies to herself.

A man of honor would never get involved with his nephewโ€™s wife. Nor would such a man want to set up house before his great-nephew was told about his parentsโ€™ divorce and his fatherโ€™s grave injuries. It was so callous of Drew to suggest that the kids would be happy to live with him and Scout as a blended family. It shows that Drew really doesnโ€™t care about Wiley and Amelia — or even Scout.

Further proof that the man claiming to be Drew Quartermaine is a diabolical imposter. Someone like Shiloh.

Jason despises the man that Drew has shown himself to be, but he still made an effort to make peace for the sake of the kids. Itโ€™s the least that Danny and Scout deserve after losing their mother. Unfortunately for Scout, Drew is a jealous crybaby who is bitter that Jason is the family’s golden child. Drew spent a few years with Betsy Frank and then grew up in an orphanage.

Of course, Drew engaged in a little revisionist history when he whined about how the Qโ€™s rejecting him. For starters, Jason and Monica reconciled years ago. Long before Drew ever came to town. Jason moved home, but he’s been a part of the family fold for over a decade now. Jason had nothing to do with what happened to Drew. That was all on Heather and Heather alone.

I still donโ€™t get how Drew went from being the upstanding kindhearted man who selflessly put his loved ones ahead of himself to this detestable shell of a man today. I could never imagine Billy Millerโ€™s Drew saying the ridiculous things that Drew spewed to Jason in the Dawn of Day living room.

Of all the sets, why did they stick Drew in that one? Probably to mess with us. LOL

Chase was still reeling from being told that he was sterile when Brook Lynn was forced to drop another bombshell. I have no idea why no one has suggested that Chase get a second opinion from a fertility specialist, but that aside, I can appreciate why Chase is struggling.

I donโ€™t blame Brook Lynn for admitting that sheโ€™d been pregnant and had experienced the miracle of birth. Her heart was breaking for Chase because he was tortured by the idea that he might have robbed her of that experience. She had been wanting to tell Chase the truth about her baby for some time now.

Chase of course was magnificent and said all the right things, including asking if she wanted to find her child. However, the one thing he didnโ€™t ask was the name of the babyโ€™s father. I wonder if he will confide to Dante what Brook Lynn shared and if Dante will put the pieces together.

Either way, I see a confession in Loisโ€™ near future, and a family reunion between Brook Lynn, Gio, and Dante. I can’t imagine that Lulu is going to like that. She already feels like Brook Lynn had stepped into her life while Lulu was in a coma. In many ways, she has, but it was not deliberate.

Becky Herbst is such a fantastic actress. Her scenes with Jeff Kober were incredible, and they both share performer of the week in my book. I hope it earns her a Daytime Emmy win.

My husband — who is stuck watching General Hospital in the winter because Iโ€™m in charge of the living room tv between 2:00pm and 3:00pm Monday thru Friday — had an observation about Deputy Mayor Jordan Ashford. He said, โ€œSheโ€™s the most competent law enforcement person in that town.โ€ Heโ€™s right. Jordan gets more done with a phone call than Anna does with an entire police department at her disposal.

Curtis needs to sell the Savoy to Nโ€™neka. Itโ€™s time. He has his hands full with Aurora Media.

I find that I like Emma a lot more when Gio is around to keep her in check.

For a good non-soapy read, be sure to check out this week’s The 80s Countdown by our very own Dan Kroll.

Happy viewing!

  1. So, what happens to Cyrus story. Will they find a body? Joss suddenly lets go of trying to find Dex’s killer?

    • JDF

When Brennan said to clean up the scene except for one thing, I thought he meant Cyrus’ body. What was the one thing they didn’t clean up?

    • Liz Masters

Well, we know the body was moved because it wasn’t on the floor when the cops entered the cabin. It seems likely that Cyrus will simply vanish, and people will assume he skipped town.

Unfortunately, Josslyn shot him with Dex’s gun, which means if they find the body the evidence will lead them straight to Josslyn. It’s harder to claim self-defense if you engaged in a coverup, so the dye has been cast.

    • CeeGee

Excellent questions. And although I’m not against the idea of Joss becoming an agent, this path in that direction leaves me uninspired. I don’t know why they insist on writing the characters and actions of both Joss and Anna as soooooo stupid, especially if they expect us to invest in the directions they’re going.

Aside from the self defense being so glaringly obvious, if Joss was going to call anyone other than 911 why in the world would it be Jack Brennan and not Dante (to make sure the authorities were involved properly and in the best way for her), or even Sonny or Jason (if she was so scared and muddled she thought covering it up might be needed?)

And despite really trying, I just can’t engage with the new actor as the Jack Brennan that was starting to be a really interesting addition to the canvas. Just doesn’t have the same vibe or presence in this role

  2. Humor Me

Bravo Liz! A Great Column for a week that blew the lid of literally every story line going currently.
~We finally have a mental fix on Drew
~ We are seeing Joss in a new light and a literal change of life experience. She will never be the same. O/T – I just wish EH would be brought back in the new role to link up with Joss, as she needs a new confidant that is parallel to her new life. I cannot see EMcC with anyone else.
~ Whattaman is Chase – understanding, caring, loving, and sterile. Dear lord, BLQ – do not turn loose of him! Adopt, get IVF, but keep this man!
~ Willow put the Brakes on Drew and his pipe dream family. ’bout time she stood on her own two feet.
~ and the most fun of all: Where or Where is Cyrus’s body? and the trophies from his kills? How will Brennan tie this up in a neat package for Anna to find and close the books.

    • I want to know too about Cyrus. Good week then the dud with that.

      • Liz Masters

        Thank you!

I can’t wait for Monday to see how things play out at the cabin.

I’m not sure how long Willow can keep lying to herself about Drew. Since that kiss of death in July, Willow’s life has completely imploded, she’s the town’s pariah, and her kids are without a father. At some point, she has got to see that Drew is no good for her and there’s a reason that he no longer has any friends or family that respect him.

I thought it was interesting when Anna, Jordan, and Laura agreed that it was time to do a deep dive into Drew. Everyone can see that he is not the same man that he once was. Will they find something? If Jordan does the sleuthing, they will. I don’t have much faith in Anna sussing things out.

  3. JDF

I don’t get this Joss and Brennan thing. She breaks into Cyrus’ apartment and leaves clues that she broke in and then she trashes his cabin and gets caught by Cyrus! But Brennan thinks she would be a great WSB agent. Her decision to call Brennan instead of the police shows that she doesn’t know what she’s doing. Cyrus went after her with a hatchet so it was clearly self defense and the cabin was full of evidence that Cyrus killed all those people. PC would have thrown her a parade. The new Brennan just doesn’t possess the charm of original Brennan.

    • Panhandlerann

It wasn’t Cyrus’s apartment. It was Austin’s cabin, where Cyrus has been squatting to stage his crimes.

    • Kathie

Brennan also fed Josslyn a lot of information. He pointed her in Cyrusโ€™s direction, told her about the hideout. So itโ€™s not like she did a lot of great detective work. This also seems like a relationship killer as far as Brennan and Carly go. I donโ€™t see Carly being thrilled with Brennan manipulating Joss and telling her to keep secrets from Carly.

As for the logic of cleaning up the crime scene instead of calling the police as it was a self-defense killing, I see two reasons for that. The first is for the story the writers want to tell moving forward. Maybe weโ€™ll see Joss dissembling or maybe she goes all in working with Brennan. Maybe Jasonโ€™s going to be in hot water because he publicly threatened to kill Cyrus and make his body disappear. Weโ€™ll see.

The second is that some people are just liars. Being honest does not occur to them. This is like when Michael killed Claudia. That was a justifiable homicide. But Sonny and Jason do not deal in justifiable homicides, so they did what they always doโ€”lied and covered up. Which made everything worse. Probably Jack is the same. The consequences of his course of action are to be determined (probably not good)

  4. JDF

I think I have a great way to get rid of Drew. It’s crazy enough for the soap world as well. If you remember, Franco once claimed to be Jason’s fraternal twin. I propose that they make Drew the fraternal twin of Franco. That would make Heather his mother and Scotty would be Drew’s father. If that’s not bad enough, Drew would lose all his Quartermain money. I think that’s better than Shiloh in a Drew mask or a memory transplant from
    Shiloh to Drew.

    • Liz Masters

For clarification: The cabin is not owned by Cyrus. It was his secret hideout.
The cabin is one of the properties that Jordan found when she looked into Austin Gatlin-Holt, who was one of Cyrus’ known associates.
Additionally, that’s the cabin where Austin was murdered.

    • Liz Masters

Anything is possible, especially when Heather was involved. However, I seem to recall a DNA test confirming that Drew was in fact Jason’s identical twin back when Jason returned, and they realized that Drew couldn’t be Jason.

      • Kathie

Carly ran a DNA test when she suspected Jake Doe was Jason. When Jason came back, it was fingerprints that distinguished Jason from Drew because identical twins have the same DNA but different fingerprints. Plus Andre Maddox confirmed the memory mapping or whatever it was called. I canโ€™t recall who told the story of the stolen twin baby, but it must have been Betsy Frank when Franco was having childhood memories of Andrew Cain.

In addition to the DNA, Jason and Drew looked the same. The only reason they donโ€™t now is the plastic surgery Drew had after Ava ran into him with her car. When Shiloh and Kim Nero knew Drew before his time in Port Charles, he looked like Jason. That would be a remarkable coincidence if he were Francoโ€™s twin.

    • Terry

I really like that idea!! However, there was a DNA test done at the time. Plus, we saw pictures of Drew in the Navy. Since they were actually Jason, we know that before Drew’s accident, he looked just like Jason. Robin also thought Drew was Jason when she dropped him off in Port Charles just before the accident.

  5. CeeGee

Totally agree about how completely unfortunate (and surely avoidable) it was to have the Lucky replacement actor play him in the only two days since he came back to town where anything notable happened for him! What a complete letdown to not have Jonathan Jackson share that first new kiss with Elizabeth, or be the Lucky we saw arrive at the critical moment. It felt more like “who’s this rando Elizabeth thinks is Lucky, and why are they kissing?”

Certainly they could have at least delayed the kiss until after Lucky wakes up…

    • MLG

I get that they might not have been able to delay the kiss, but it was sure apparent how good RH and LW are as actresses when I saw them interacting with their new screen partners. Definite professionals!

  6. CeeGee

Question that’s been bothering me for a while regarding Dreeewww and Aurora. Didn’t he start Aurora with Sam using the $ that was “his” when he was still Jason? And isn’t that the vast wealth Jason made working with Sonny and not Q money? (And then when Jason returned, he let Drew keep Aurora and a lot of the $?)

So, wouldn’t that make everything he insists is his only his because of Jason and the occupations Drew spits upon so vehemently?

Maybe I’m not remembering it all accurately, anyone else?

    • Kathie

Drew and Sam bought Aurora from Julian. Yes, with Jasonโ€™s money. I vaguely remember that when Jason came back and divorced Sam, the idea was that Drew & Sam would gradually pay him back. But I may be wrong; even if Iโ€™m right, we donโ€™t know if there was follow through.

  7. Gg

They could of done this without dex dying

  8. MLG

There are several plot holes that keep nagging at me.
    1. If Cyrus was trying to release Lulu into/by death, why did he arrange to move her secretly to South Carolina? What was the point of that?
    2. If Austin G-H had owned the cabin prior to his death, it surely would have changed hands by now. A (long) dead man wouldnโ€™t be on record with the city as the current proprietor for Anna, Jordan and co to find. And if it had changed hands, it wouldโ€™ve taken a lot longer for them to find the connection.
    3. The WSB cleaned up everything in record time, given how quickly the PCPD found the cabin.

Also, did anyone notice the Nursing textbook on Joss and Trinaโ€™s coffee table? I highly doubt an art history student and an environmental science student would have that.

    • JDF

All good points, but the writers change things in mid stream. Remember when Austin and his cousin were supposedly connected to a boss lady that we never saw or even got a hint as to who she might be and then suddenly their connection is to Cyrus. Then all that was dropped and I thought we would never hear the name
      Dr. Austin Gatlain Holt again.

    • Evelyn Sackfield

It could possibly still be in Austin’s name. If someone dies with no will or direct heir it is a legal nightmare that can go on for years.

    Hello, Soap Friends.

Answer: The local teleporter of course! ๐Ÿ˜‰

      • Missez Premise

        I need one of those.

  10. Kathie

Pure speculation, but I wonder if the show passed on โ€œwho killed Cyrusโ€ to save up for โ€œwho killed Drewโ€. Everyone on the show hates Drew; viewers do not like Drew, so I donโ€™t see how this can continue. I could easily see Willow or Ninaโ€”hardly models of stabilityโ€”snapping and accidentally killing him. Or Sidwell since that alliance canโ€™t end well. Yes, killing Drew would be sad for Scout, but after this week, Iโ€™m certain sheโ€™d be better off. What an awful person he is to let his petty grievances control who his little girl spends time with. Drew is basically doing the same thing to Scout as he is to Willowโ€”isolating her to ensure she stays his acolyte. He is no longer the man who would build a tree house with Jason to honor the wishes of his late son.

Drew is also not a good congressman if heโ€™s focusing his attention and influence on settling scores instead of governing. I canโ€™t tell you how much I do not want to see that right now. And guess what Drewโ€”Jason does not care about that stupid warehouse.

    • JDF

Well, more people might hate Drew right now than Cyrus. I do think the Brennan has a bigger con going on. He mentioned that he didn’t witness Cyrus approaching Joss with the hatchet and later said that he did not know that Joss had a gun. Doesn’t make any sense because she would have been killed if she didn’t have the gun. I am convinced that Brennan witnessed every thing that happened at the cabin. He knew that Cyrus was a killer and I doubt that he would leave Joss unprotected. He’s using Joss for another reason.

  11. Kam

While I always did suspect that Jack was planning on recruiting Josslyn to the WSB, a part of me always felt like there was a longer con here. I think she might be a small fish that he’s using to reel in the big fish that he really wants. Once it becomes clear that he’s recruiting Josslyn, I think that in order to stop it, Jason will take Jack up on his original offer to work for him and join the WSB.

It’s interesting that Jordan seems to be a competent law enforcement official NOW. I find it interesting that whenever somebody is actually part of the PCPD, they seem totally inept at their job. But once they leave the position but still investigate matters, they’re much more competent than they were while they were actually on the job. It’s okay for someone who isn’t in law enforcement to solve or help solve crimes every once in awhile, but I don’t see why soap operas are so allergic to having an actual competent police force solving crimes on their own, without outside help or interference.

    • Evaine

I’m with you, Kam! There is something more to this Joss/Brennan thing than him just being impressed by her um… investigative savvy.

It will be interesting to see where Dex got that gun. Can it be traced back to Sonny? I know Sonny once gave Dex a gun but I can’t recall Sonny or Jason ever handling a revolver. I do remember Ava with a revolver.

Sonny did give Dex a gun, but it wasn’t a revolver. Also, I believe Dex got rid of it because he used it to shoot Heather Webber when she attacked Britt as she was defending Josslyn. The revolver was likely just a personal weapon.
