Let’s discuss that and more in the latest General Hospital commentary for the week ending January 03, 2025.

Happy New Year, dear readers and fellow General Hospital fans. I hope 2025 is filled with good health, prosperity, and blessings for each of you. Sadly, it didn’t get off to a good start for the poor souls in New Orleans. My heart goes out to the victims and their families of that senseless terrorist attack. I will never understand the mental gymnastics it takes to plot something that evil on innocent people, especially in the name of religion. That sounds more like the devil’s work.

Naturally, the terrorist attack dominated the news, so we had an unexpected pre-emption of General Hospital on Wednesday, leaving us with just three new episodes for the week. But, boy were those episodes filled with juicy developments.

The tainted lovers

Willow and Drew have zero shame. Worse, they see themselves as victims even though their nasty little romp on the nursery floor — not to mention their months long emotional affair — imploded Willow’s marriage to Michael. Nope, in their delusional world, Michael is the bad guy. He is the one who put the nanny cam in the nursery — to monitor the new nanny — which captured Drew and Willow having illicit sex. Willow is mad that Michael didn’t immediately tell her about the recording, and she blames him for Tracy inadvertently playing the recording for all to see at the Christmas party.

The truth is that Willow needs for Michael to be the bad guy because it lessens the sting of her own misdeeds.

Willow and Drew are being pitched as a supercouple in the making, but General Hospital viewers aren’t buying it. | PHOTO: ABC

A good spin on a bad sin

In a recent Soap Opera Digest interview, Katelyn MacMullen (Willow Corinthos) spoke about the end of Willow’s marriage. I realize that the actors are going to put the best spin on things, and that they often parrot what the show’s powers that be say. I have nothing but respect for Katelyn, but I don’t see things the way that she does.

Katelyn said of Willow, “She’s in the frame of mind of not ever having dealt with this kind of thing; she’s a little in over her head and overwhelmed.” According to Katelyn, “She’s like, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa, I’m not ready for a lawyer. Michael and I will work this out, we’ll talk about it, we’ve always been able to figure things out and I know we can make this fair.’ But then, of course, events transpire to change that.”

Never a good time for bad news

That’s not what I saw unfold. Willow knew her tryst in the nursery with Drew would be the end of her marriage, so she decided to give her kids one last happy family Christmas before coming clean to Michael. But who knows if she would have. She spent months waffling between confessing about the kisses and keeping mum for the sake of her marriage. She might have done the same about her infidelity.

I don’t think Willow ever wanted to save her marriage. She was just biding her time waiting for an excuse to leave Michael where she could play the wronged party. When Tracy accidentally outed the affair during the Quartermaine Christmas party, Willow went straight home. It didn’t take much for Nina to persuade her to pack up the kids and leave. The next day, Nina hired Willow an attorney, and Willow greenlighted Martin filing for divorce.

There was never any conversation with Michael. Never any attempt to save her marriage.

Actions have consequences, even on General Hospital

I realize that both Katelyn and Cameron Mathison are at the mercy of the writers, but it’s a bad romance. Drew comes across as calculating, selfish, and overall gross for pursuing a relationship with his nephew’s wife. Willow might be naive about Drew’s true character, but she is not innocent. She was quick to judge and condemn Michael, while taking no accountability for her own transgressions.

Willow acts like her affair with Drew couldn’t be helped, and that they should get credit for trying to fight their feelings. She makes excuses for allowing her lover to spend Christmas Eve with kids, while relegating Michael to a measly Christmas morning breakfast in a hotel with Wiley and Amelia.

I loved Lucas storming in and calling Willow out like that. He spoke for so many of us.

Willow spent months being dishonest by hiding her growing feelings for Drew and twice acting on them. Actions have consequences, so seeing Willow play the victim feels a bit like gaslighting. The writers are not winning viewers like me over by doing this. I can only speak for myself, but I don’t see a whole lot of support for Drew and Willow online.

Mommy dearest isn’t much better

Nina is just as manipulative as Drew. Nina isn’t looking out for Willow or the children’s best interests by pushing Willow to file for divorce and custody of Wiley and Amelia. That benefits Nina because she has always resented having to share her daughter and grandchildren with Michael. Having been robbed of raising her twins, Nina is desperate to have Willow, Wiley, and Amelia all to herself.

What Nina is doing is all about Nina. If it was about Willow and the kids, Nina would have been honest with Willow about sleeping with Drew the moment Willow told her about the kiss. She would have helped Willow see Drew for the sleazy dirtbag he is and given Willow a real chance to save her marriage. Willow wouldn’t have been mad because Nina was sleeping with Drew long before he kissed Willow. Had Nina been honest then, she would have spared herself all the heartache that is to come.

I can’t wait for the day that Willow learns Nina lied to her too.

What’s good for the goose is good for the gander

I realize that Michael isn’t without sin. He had a tequila fueled one-night stand with Sasha that resulted in an unplanned pregnancy. However, he wouldn’t have been sitting in that bar in the first place if he hadn’t been blindsided by Willow’s infidelity.

Like Willow, Michael decided to wait to tell Willow about Sasha until after Christmas. He wanted to give their children one last happy family holiday. As a parent, I understand that. In this instance, both Willow and Michael put their children’s happiness first.

Unlike Willow, Michael continues to do that. Well, he did up until he learned that Willow took Wiley to Washington, DC for Drew’s swearing in ceremony. Not only that, but she posed for pictures with Drew, which were plastered all over the news websites. Talk about flaunting your affair.

Breaking the cycle

Michael explained that he didn’t want to take the children away from Willow because she was a good mother. He also didn’t want his kids to endure what Michael, and his siblings went through during Sonny and Carly’s tumultuous breakups. I commend him for that. I also respected Michael for not being vindictive toward Willow. He offered her far more grace than she did him. Unfortunately, Willow’s latest move was the last straw.

Does Michael owe Willow the truth about what happened with Sasha? No. Not anymore. Willow walked out on the marriage and has filed for divorce. He owes her nothing. Willow burned that bridge when she had served Michael with legal papers without so much as a conversation.

Will Sasha ever be happy for more than 2.3 seconds? She’s flawed, but she owns it. She also makes an effort to do better. That said, I hate that she wants to cut Michael out of their baby’s life. It’s not right, and it’s not what is best for the baby.

Sasha’s arguments ring hollow to me. Michael has shown in the last couple of weeks that he puts his children first, and that he’s a good man. He’s not vilifying Willow or talking about her disparagingly. He respects her as a mother and wants what’s best for his kids. Why would Sasha not want a man like that as a father for her baby.

It was wrong of Sasha to tell Michael that she doesn’t want him to be a part of their child’s life because of his father and his family. She’s punishing him for the actions of others. He can’t help that he was born a Quartermaine and raised a Corinthos any more than Sasha could help being Holly and Robert’s daughter. Given Holly’s history — and the fact that Sidwell was recently seen seated in church behind Sasha — I would say the baby is in far more danger from Sasha’s family’s enemies than Michael’s.

I know much of this is being dictated by Chad Duell’s exit from General Hospital in the coming weeks, but the writing makes Sasha look selfish and unfair. A child is not a procession, and Michael has as much right to be a part of the baby’s life as Sasha does.

Children need both parents to step up and do right by them.

Braedyn Bruner is the new Emma Drake on General Hospital. Don’t get me wrong, I love that Emma is back and appears to be sticking around. It’s great too that she’s spirited, but it’s the same tired schtick we’ve seen for decades going as far back as Laura’s introduction.

Emma was always a kind and intelligent child. Often far wiser than the adults around her. Surely that Emma would have known that Anna would eventually figure out that Emma had been kicked out of school and moved to Port Charles without running it by her parents first. Why lie about it? Last I checked, Emma was an adult and free to choose her own path in life. The Emma I knew and watched grow up on General Hospital would have been upfront and honest about something like that.

Emma also wouldn’t have picked someone’s pocket to right a wrong. She would have called that person out — loudly and proudly. The only thing that is consistent with the old Emma was her dislike for Josslyn.

It’s nice to see that Joss is going to have a little competition, but can the writers please tone it down a bit and let the real Emma shine through? After all, variety is the spice of life.

Trouble brewing at General Hospital

Is Cyrus an Angel of Mercy serial killer or are his reasons for injecting people with deadly doses of Digitalis more personal? I suspect the latter. Sam was healthy and would have made a full recovery but for Cyrus. The same is true for Dex.

I’m more certain than ever that Cyrus tried to kill Lulu by turning off her ventilator, and that he murdered both Sam and Dex to keep his secrets buried.

Just before Dex was stabbed, he’d had a tense exchange with Cyrus about Cyrus’ presence at the hospital during the incident with Lulu’s ventilator. When Dex survived the attempt on his life, he was murdered the same way that Sam was. Thanks to flashbacks, we know that Cyrus was responsible for Sam’s murder, so it’s safe to assume that Cyrus was also behind the deaths of both Dex and Elizabeth’s other patient months earlier.

What secret is Cyrus hiding, and is he intentionally framing Elizabeth?

Friends like these

Elizabeth is up to her neck in trouble. As the investigation ramps up and new victims are uncovered, all eyes turn to Elizabeth as a prime suspect. Elizabeth has been the one common denominator in all of the deaths, so it doesn’t look good. At least not on the surface.

However, the people at General Hospital are doing a poor job of investigating because a quick look at security footage would exonerate Elizabeth and implicate a mystery doctor entering the victims’ rooms in the minutes before each died of a heart attack. Yet, no mention has been made of those tapes except a few weeks ago when Portia claimed they were being reviewed. I have my doubts.

Instead, Terry and Portia seem to be zeroing in on Elizabeth as a person of interest. As her best friends, you’d think they’d know better.

I was so disappointed that both Terry and Portia let their friend walk in on an ambush. With friends like that, who needs enemies? I know that Terry and Portia have a responsibility to General Hospital, and that they were asking questions to get to the bottom of things, but it was not an informational meeting. It stopped being that when the hospital’s lawyer showed up and questioned Elizabeth like a suspect.

I was never so happy to see Ric as I was when he walked in and cut the meeting short. Go Ric!

Cassadines on the run

Lulu managed to reconnect with Charlotte, but things ended in disaster when Jack’s assassin Colette Moreau took aim from a sniper’s nest. Fortunately, she’s a bad shot and missed her target. The only damage was to a window, but the commotion gave Valentin an opportunity to make a clean escape from the Prague restaurant, He also managed to take Charlotte with him, which left Lulu stomping her feet in frustration.

After ditching the AirPod that Lulu had planted in Charlotte’s bag, Valentin and Charlotte hopped into a car and took off. Once the coast was clear, Valentin pulled to the side of the road and had a heart-to-heart talk with Charlotte about her future. He gave her a choice: stay with him or go to her mother.

Guilt is a powerful motivator

It was clear that some of what Lulu had said had gotten through to Valentin, but instead of being the adult and doing the right thing, he let Charlotte make the decision. Naturally, Charlotte chose Valentin because it’s been just the two of them from the start.

It’s just been Valentin and Charlotte for all these years because he selfishly cut Lulu out of Charlotte’s life since conception. Not only did he hire a surrogate to carry Charlotte, but he never told Lulu that an embryo had been created from her stolen eggs. Worse, he lied to Charlotte by allowing her to believe that Claudette was her birth mother.

If Valentin truly wanted what was best for Charlotte, she would be returning home with Lulu and Dante. But he’s a selfish man who uses guilt to manipulate his daughter into staying by his side. Charlotte will never be free to spread her wings and be her true self as long as she lives in hiding with her father.

An exit strategy for retirement

In an interesting twist, Sonny suffered two incidents of chest pains. The last one dropped him to the floor. Luckily, Dr. Isaiah Gannon was on hand to assess the situation and get Sonny some fluids. But he warned Sonny that it was not an isolated incident, so Sonny needed to get checked out at General Hospital. Sonny was resistant at first, but Isaiah made it clear that Sonny could end up suffering a fatal heart attack or stroke.

And that is what it took for Sonny to finally consider retirement. Not just consider it but to start making plans for it. Sonny had hoped to pass the reins to Jason, but Jason wasn’t interested. Jason explained that he would step up and temporarily run things, but he had no desire to take Sonny’s place. Good for Jason. Then again, he was always more comfortable following orders than giving them.

I’ve waited years to see this storyline. Will Sonny and Jason be able to walk away, and who will take their place?
