Sometimes things are so unbelievable that we need to see them with our own eyes. It’s often the only way to… Make A Stupid Story Make Sense: A Beyond the Gates commentary by Soap Central founder Dan J Kroll for the week ending August 21, 2026.

Have you ever done something so ridiculously dumb that you wonder why you’re allowed to mix and mingle with the rest of humanity? If it makes you feel better, I did something the other day that made me say to myself, “This is why you are not allowed to leave the house.”

Reality is often stranger than fiction, but that doesn’t mean that fictional characters make any better decisions than the rest of us. Showing up to a random hotel room because someone from your past that you don’t want anything to do with summons you. Sexing the woman who serves you alcohol at your favorite bar while your wife is at home recovering from a miscarriage. Having sexytimes with your husband when he’s still confined to a hospital bed after having heart surgery. Sassing your boss’s daughter when she’s trying to hold down the fort while her father is in the hospital being sexed to death.

Sometimes there is just no making a stupid decision make sense. And sometimes it’s even difficult for the writers of a soap opera to make sense of story decisions. But what do all of these things have in common? The need to trust that making mistakes and bad decisions will eventually lead to better things down the road.

Don’t have time to read the entire Beyond the Gates column? A past as lovers. While Heather seems to remember their time together rather fondly, Andre… seems to remember things differently.

We haven’t quite learned yet why Andre seems so fearful of Heather. Andre didn’t know that Heather was Joey’s sister when he met her, presumably because she didn’t tell him and was going by the last name “Wallach.” We don’t know, though, if Heather was engaging in her criminal activities back then or, if she was, if Andre knew about them.

It seems to me like Andre is afraid of more than just his ex-lover strolling into town. Nearly everyone has an ex. Most people have more than one. Those exes are exes because the relationship is over. Andre shouldn’t be afraid of Heather being in the DMV unless things aren’t as over as he’s led us to believe.

When Heather planted a kiss on Andre in her hotel room, he seemed shocked. His face almost immediately flashed “Danger! Danger!” as he pulled himself away. He reiterated that he was married, but Heather doesn’t seem to be someone who gets hung up on technicalities.

Ashley Jones as Heather Armstrong and Sean Freeman as Andre Richardson.
Beyond The Gates | Photo: CBS

Stalk much?

Heather, in addition to being a crime boss, is incredibly messy. The way she strolled into Orphey Gene’s and scurried right over to Andre and Dani’s table was so, so messy. It got even twistier when Andre learned that his wife and former lover were longtime friends. Okay, maybe not longtime friends, but they had hung out on more than one occasion.

After that awkward diner encounter, Andre beelined it to Heather’s hotel room. He warned Heather that if she was trying to “blow up” his marriage, he would tell Dani the truth about their past. Heather insisted that she wasn’t trying to do that and noted that she could have told Dani the truth at any time. She sensed that Andre really loved Dani, and that caught her off guard.

Heather had a very cryptic rebuttal. She would leave Dani alone if Andre would get her what she wanted. “You know what it is,” she said as she glanced downward. To me, that seemed to signal that Heather wanted something sexual. To be fair, I probably would have thought that even without her looking down in a suggestive manner. Andre turned to leave, but Heather warned him that he didn’t have long to make his decision.

The Truth Shall Set You Free, Right?

Let’s assume that Heather wants sex in exchange for her silence. All Andre has to do is tell Dani that he and Heather used to be a thing and her leverage is gone. Andre had already told Heather that he’d tell Dani… so I feel like I am missing something. Dani already knows that Andre was a ladies’ man, so it won’t shock her that he had lovers before her.

That leads me back to my initial belief that Andre knows that Heather is trouble. Maybe I am just overreacting because Dani thinks that Heather is a wonderful human being, in spite of her infamous sibling. “Heather’s really her own person. She’s nothing like Joey,” Dani said confidently.

LSD: The Origin Story

While we still don’t have all of Heather and Andre’s backstory, we do know a lot about when Harry met Sally. Oops, sorry. When Ted met Dana. The Thursday, August 20, episode didn’t really tell us anything that we didn’t already know – Ted first met Leslie in a restaurant (and later in a bar) while he and Nicole were having marital problems.

There were, however, details that filled in some of the missing pieces. It appears that Leslie is the one who caught feelings first. Initially, Ted made it clear that he was married and could not feel the same way. As time passed – and we weren’t really told how much time had passed – the liquor got poured a little quicker and Ted spent more time at the bar. One thing led to another and Ted and Leslie had sex.

Or maybe it wasn’t just sex. Maybe it was “making love” because Ted definitely told Leslie that he loved her before the action got started.

Before moving on, I need to address something because it has been bothering me ever since the episode aired. That plush animal that Ted gave Leslie was most definitely not a teddy bear. It was a dog. It had floppy ears and a tail. Bears do not have floppy ears and a tail. I will admit that some folks refer to any stuffed animal as a “teddy bear,” but those people would be wrong.

I Know Who You Did Last Summer

Now that that’s out of my system, let’s get back to the backstory portion of the column. It’s interesting to me that we now know that Bill knew that Ted was cheating on Nicole. That was something that I expected. Bill tried to talk some sense into Ted, but it did no good. Bill even admitted to having “stepped out” on his marriage. This was proof that Bill had been cheating on Dani more than 20 years before Hayley came into the picture – and Ted knew about it. Maybe he didn’t say anything because he was having an affair of his own or maybe Ted assumed that everyone already knew that Bill was unfaithful.

In that alternate universe where Mona is the Impaler, Ted didn’t cheat on Nicole and they are still living happily ever after. That might seem like a better scenario – that they are still married, not that Mona turned to a life of crime – but that also means that Eva does not exist in that universe. It has to be hard for Ted to reconcile a mistake that changed his life for both the better and the worse.

Daughter Knows Best

I thought that Eva’s romantic advice to her mother was spot on: “I hate that you’re willing to toss aside a sure thing for a never-gonna-happen thing.” That sure thing, of course, being Marcel Malone. Marcel is obviously taken by Leslie and I thought she felt the same way. Now LSD (That’s Leslie/Sherry/Dana) has proven that Marcel was nothing more than a glorified placeholder for Ted. Leslie had many a chance to make things right with Marcel, but she didn’t.

I am not faulting her for not wanting to live on Sheila, Marcel’s boat. Leslie doesn’t really strike me as a houseboat kinda gal. She could have politely declined and suggested that Marcel spend time with her in her hotel suite. No, instead Leslie thought she could show up at Ted’s doorstep (or whatever the equivalent is in a hotel) with a bottle of Champagne and pick up like it was old times.

I have to believe that Leslie mistakenly believes that she is Ted’s Plan B – that if he and Shanice breakup she is somehow elevated to the position of Ted’s woman. That’s not how it works. Given how this week of episodes has played out, I’d guess that Nicole is in the second place position. While Ted was lamenting how he’d ruined his marriage, Nicole was thinking back to how she and Ted almost rekindled their fire in his hotel room – until Leslie pulled the fire alarm and put the kibosh on that.

How long before these crazy kids figure out that they still love each other?

Sex As A Weapon

I can never tell what’s going through Hayley’s mind at any given time. We’ve heard her say that sex with Bill was always a good time, but we also know that she wants Bill dead so she can get her $10,000,000 pay day. We’ve heard her say that she wants Bill gone immediately, but she’s also admitted that Bill needs to die somewhere off the grid so that no one gets suspicious.

Sexing the man to death in a hospital bed is definitely not off the grid. I mean, the man has all sorts of electrodes and monitors connected to his body. The minute they started getting busy, the entire nursing staff knew that something was up.

Was Hayley trying to off Bill in the most carnal way imaginable? Was she scratching an itch one last time? She had to know that there was an entire staff of people who could step in to save Bill in the event of a medical emergency. Was she just checking to see how far she could go before Bill had another cardiac episode?

There is also another possibility. Hayley is getting careless. Even Randy noticed that her grifting skills had taken a dip in recent months.

The Slow-Clap Eviction

I have no idea what is really going on in that pretty little head of hers, but I know that it was funny when Ashley raced into the room and found the no-longer-newlyweds in flagrante delicto. For the first time in I don’t know how long, Ashley was both funny and kind of hot with assertiveness.

The way she clapped each accent in “we’re gonna keep things G-rated” like an elementary school teacher was condescending and hilarious. Then when Hayley jumped in to accuse Ashley of “overstepping,” Ashley fired back with the shady zinger, “I’m sorry did you want to give me the parameters of my job? Because last I checked you barely had one.”

I did see people on social media who agreed with Hayley. But not me. I don’t think that Ashley went too far. I have no idea if hospitals have a no sex policy. Clearly Garland Memorial and Grey Sloan Memorial do not. Sorry, it’s been too long since I snuck a Grey’s Anatomy reference into a column. Maybe the “no relations” policy is just for patients. Whatever the policy is or was, I liked the more assertive Ashley getting Hayley escorted out of the hospital.

Beside, Behind, and Beyond The Gates: The Speed Round

Here are some of the thoughts and observations about other things happening on Beyond the Gates.

Congressman Absentee Father?

I’ve often said that everything happens on a soap for a reason. The examples I usually give are a woman feeling light-headed and anyone having a headache. On soaps, people are not allowed to have normal, everyday conditions. A headache is always a brain tumor. Likewise, a woman feeling light-headed obviously means she’s pregnant. Another example is seeing anyone behind the wheel of a car — an accident is imminent.

That’s why I have to wonder if these repeated mentions that Martin used to date girls/women mean something. It could be nothing more than a gay origin story, but this being a soap I don’t know if I believe that. Might we see a woman coming with an October Surprise in the form of a child Martin didn’t know he had? I mean, Martin is his father’s son…

Joey Armstrong: The Hallmark Movie Version

I don’t know of anyone who thinks of Joey as the warm and fuzzy type. Hell, I don’t even think Vanessa would describe him that way. So, imagine my surprise when Joey turned out to be just that.

We were told quite some time ago about how Joey sent Izaiah off to college to help free him from the wrong crowd that he’d been running with. What never made sense was the why. Why did Joey decide that Izaiah was worth “saving” and better saved than a part of his sprawling criminal enterprise?

Whatever the reason, it was was shocking to hear Joey refer to Izaiah as his “legacy” because he didn’t have any children of his own. I was waiting for the other shoe to drop. I was certain that he’d say something like, “When I die, all of this is yours.” That didn’t happen. Instead, Joey said that helping Izaiah was “one of the few things” that he had done right.

Is there more to the story than we are being told? I’m not sure, but I am sure that I really like this father-sonish relationship that Joey and Izaiah have.

Let’s Settle This Once And For All

It sure looks like Tomas is on his way out of Bill Hamilton and Associates — or whatever Bill named his law practice. It’s one thing to overstep with Hayley, it’s another entirely to upset Naomi. Bill is not a happy man and it’s not the first time that he’s gotten ticked off by something Tomas has done. I have to wonder if Mike’s passing invitation for Tomas to join “the big boys” might soon be an offer that Tomas might have to take.

Quick Takes

I love Chelsea and hate the idea that a year later she is still being tormented by what Allison did to her. That said, I really liked Brianna Roberts as Allison Bailey. Allison was two cups of crazy and Brianna was absolutely brilliant in the role.

We had our own version of American Idol this week as we were treated to performances by both Noah Rollins and Leslie “My Momma Founded the Articulettes” Thomas. Noah’s impromptu performance was nice, though I am not sure that it was something I will remember next year at this time. Leslie’s, on the other hand, was creepy. I don’t think that it was supposed to be, but that’s how it landed with me. I half-expected Leslie to start stabbing someone with the fork she was singing into. Shweedum deedum, indeed.

We don’t condone violence in this column, but Hayley mentioning that she might need more poison so she can off Bill and his entire family definitely got my attention. My eyes widened as I wondered if the show might really go there.

BTG: Behind the Graphic

If you are wondering what this week’s My View From Beyond the Gates header image is all about, you don’t need to go fishing for clues. I’ve got all the answers.

The catfish was referenced when Leslie turned down Marcel’s invitation for her to move into his houseboat with him. The basketball came up when Martin revealed that he and his team won the charity basketball tournament. The screwdriver and the holy water are a combo meal: Shanice said she would have needed both if she had walked in on Bill and Hayley in the middle of doing the do.

Shanice also gets credit for the title of this week’s column. When pressed by Monica for details about what happened in Bill’s room, she started her explanation with, “Well, to make a stupid story make sense…”

Beyond the Gates: Lines of the Week

The Beyond the Gates writing team seems to be having a little too much fun.
