The thing that makes her potential downfall all the more delicious is that she’s to blame for her own predicament.

Prior to meeting her for the first time back in February 2025, Homewrecker Hayley was apparently a top-notch con artist. We’ve only been told some of the details about her past, but, unlike Lynette Wise, it doesn’t seem like Hayley ever found herself in legal trouble.

Now, though, Hayley has suddenly become sloppy. Her cold, calculated cons have gone off the rails. Rather than continuing to play the long game with hubby Bill Hamilton, Hayley decided to go off-script and poison Bill as quickly as possible. Cousin Randy (who cosplays as Good Samaritan Sammy) warned Hayley to stick to the plan, but I guess having to put up with Bill’s family was too intolerable for Hayley.

Hayley’s insecurity about how Bill interacted with ex-wife Dani and even his own children didn’t help. Hayley enlisted Lynette’s help to help refocus Bill’s attention on her. But it was the fake mugging and Hayley’s unusually close relationship with Lynette that started to raise eyebrows.

What’s Next for Hayley

On social media this week, several people posted an image of the iconic Soap Opera Weekly cover promoting the “Who Killed Will?” murder mystery on All My Children. Gone are the days of buying a soap magazine in the checkout line of the supermarket, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t imagine what might have been.

If you’ve read my column over the past month, you’ll know that I’ve suggested that the stage had been perfectly set for a “Who Killed (or Tried to Kill) Leslie Thomas?” mystery. While I still think that would be a lot of fun, I don’t see that happening right now. I don’t think the show would kill off Hayley either, but there is certainly a growing list of suspects.

Instead of focusing on unaliving anyone, maybe we can have a “Who Exposes Hayley’s Lies?” mystery instead. In spite of her being a bad seed, I enjoy watching Marquita Goings’ work as Hayley. And now, I am loving watching nearly everyone become suspicious of her.

Tomas to the Rescue?

I still find it surprising that Tomas was the one to get the ball rolling with putting the Hayley/Lynette relationship under a microscope. Tomas must be a fairly decent attorney to have been promoted to Junior Partner at Bill’s law firm. Yes, that did happen after Tomas caught Bill and Dani smooching, but Tomas was in the running even before that.

I can’t believe I’m saying it, but I actually feel bad that Tomas’ livelihood is being threatened. Tomas is still very ick. I don’t forgive his rationale that sleeping with Eva was okay because he and Kat had broken up 30 seconds earlier. But the issue with Hayley is about his job. He is being punished for actually doing his job.

Katlock Is On the Case

Though it’s possible he overshared, Tomas has now roped Kat into this Lynette/Hayley matter. It was funny to see Kat sidle up to Lynette and try to pump her for information. Kat goes into every life situation thinking she can conquer it. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but she also has no idea when she is overmatched. We saw that in her recent square-off with LSD (That’s Leslie/Sherry/Dana for newer readers), and we saw it again when she tried to outplay Lynette.

Kat is a very determined young woman. I don’t think she’s going to give up on probing Hayley and Lynette’s connection. Unlike her involvement in the “red market” blood and plasma theft, I don’t think Kat is any kind of danger here. Yes, Hayley is actively trying to off Bill, but I don’t see her trying to do the same to Kat.

Kat tries to probe Lynette for details. | Beyond the Gates | PHOTO: CBS/Screenshot

Exhibit B(ill)

Thanks to Kat’s persistence, Bill is now starting to get a little suspicious of Hayley, too. Kat and Bill are a lot alike. Both are headstrong, determined, and a touch arrogant. We’ve all been wondering for months if Bill had any inkling that Hayley was up to no good. In fact, I took a poll on Twitter/X and nearly 75% of the respondents felt that Bill was just a big, clueless dummy.

Obviously, something that Kat said struck a nerve and made Bill look past Hayley’s “hourglass and that wiggle.” Or maybe it was that $15,250.70 hotel charge that Lynette racked up. Or it could have been a combination of all the things that, when combined, made a lot of sense. Now, Bill has sought out Joey Armstrong to enlist his help in figuring out the truth.

Are All Bets on Joey?

It didn’t take Joey long to drop a bombshell on Hayley: he knew that she wasn’t really mugged. At this point, I think that is more of an educated guess on Joey’s part. Obviously, we know he’s right, but I think he was more trying to call Hayley’s bluff. Hayley remained mostly nonplussed, but the way that she responded will undoubtedly get Joey digging even deeper.

Right now, Randy is the weak link. Will he crack if Joey starts asking questions about Hayley? I think Joey still believes that Randy and Hayley are lovers. If Joey threatens to tell Bill about the not-really-happening affair, will Randy fess up and admit that he and Hayley are cousins? And what more could Randy say? If I had to guess, I’d say that Randy would more than likely turn on Lynette. Blood is, as they say, thicker than water.

(Lynette) Wise Guy

The wild card in that scenario is that we don’t know what Lynette is capable of. Now that she’s made it clear that she doesn’t believe that Hayley loves Bill all bets are off. Lynette is demanding a cut of the grift, but I’m not sure what Lynette’s leverage is.

Lynnette could blab that the mugging was staged. I think Hayley could easily turn that around on Lynette by saying that Lynette came up with the idea and forced her to go along with. Why? Maybe because Lynette wanted to experience some of the good like that her old pal Val had found. I suppose Lynette could expose Hayley’s past as a scammer, but Hayley could bat her eyes and gush that Bill – or her love for him — reformed her.

My BFF is A Homewrecking Con Artist

Naomi doesn’t believe that Hayley is reformed. I’d say that Naomi is the one who knows Hayley best, but since she has no idea that Hayley is and was a con artist… that might not be true. Nevertheless, Naomi is also sticking it to her former bestie. It was interesting how Naomi focused on the sexual harassment allegations that Hayley had leveled against Tomas. It made sense since Naomi once, albeit briefly, represented a group of women who sued her father’s law firm for sexual harassment. The trial that never materialized was ranked as one of my Worst Storylines on Beyond the Gates in 2025.

Hayley did make a valid point: Tomas might not have been a creep back then, but that didn’t mean that he wasn’t lecherous now. Naomi, like her dad, is a little slow to pick up on the clues, but I don’t expect her to stop watching Hayley’s every move.

I’ve Had Better Nights…

Remind me never, ever to go on a double date. With anyone. For any reason.

I don’t think there is a Beyond the Gates viewer out there that thought the Vanessa/Joey and Nicole/Carlton double date was going to go smoothly. But I don’t know if anyone thought that the double date would go so wrong so fast. Because this column is a full-service editorial, I took the liberty of timing things. It took only 18.83 seconds for things to fall apart.

And if I can share a dirty little secret… I loved every moment of it.

We’ve known for some time that Joey’s mother died while undergoing plastic surgery. What I don’t think we knew was that Joey still harbored a grudge against every and all plastic surgeons. The first sign that the date wasn’t going to be a friendly chat over pub food was Joey asking, “Everyone survive?” when Carlton mentioned that he’d been in surgery all day.

While I was a bit shocked by the remark, it seemed very Joey, and I thought nothing more of it. Less than 30 seconds later, Carlton had apologized to Joey for Joey’s loss. Nicole, too. But seconds later – 7.26 if you’re keeping tabs of such things – Joey blasted the plastic surgery industry as “predatory” and the doctors in the field as “parasites.”

Vanessa tried to defuse the situation but it didn’t help. Surprisingly, Carlton also tried to change the tone of the conversation. He agreed that “illegitimate, unqualified hacks parading around as plastic surgeons” also ticked him off. Joey fired back that calling someone a “legit plastic surgeon” was an oxymoron on par with the term “jumbo shrimp.”

Normally, this might be where everyone would call it a night, but this foursome was just getting started.

… But the Martinis Were Perfect

Vanessa really, really wanted to talk about the weather. Hell, at that point politics might have been a less stressful topic. Joey continued on, claiming that no one needed liposuction or tummy tucks. He cut Carlton off before he could mention all of the non-elective surgeries that he performed. That reminded me of an episode of Seinfeld where Jerry called the dermatologist he was dating a “pimple popper.” She then reminded him that dermatologists also screen and treat skin cancer.

The blame game or shade parade or whatever you want to call it was not one-way. As Joey lashed out at an industry that fueled addiction, Nicole fired back that it was rich for Joey – the operator of a casino – to talk about the dangers of addiction. The unflappable Joey responded that, unlike both Nicole and Carlton, he had not taken a vow to “do no harm.”

I was surprised that Joey went after Nicole as much as he did. I suppose it’s that natural fight-or-flight reflex or maybe just the way that Joey is. His comment about politicians and “all those dead bodies – sometimes literally” was a bit of a low-blow.

Normally, this might be where everyone would call it a night, but nope — this foursome had not yet had enough. There was a moment of levity when the server walked over to the table to ask if anyone wanted or needed a drink and everyone quickly ordered up another round.

Vanessa, Joey, Nicole, and Carlton’s double date wasn’t quite a good time. | Beyond the Gates | PHOTO: CBS/Screenshot

But Wait! There’s More!

The double date was so enjoyably messy that it stretched into a second episode. If you worried that everyone would calm down, you were very much mistaken. Vanessa tried again to turn down the temperature by claiming that Joey was just being funny.

Carlton tried to turn the tables by mentioning the rumors of Joey’s “side businesses” that don’t show up on any tax returns. This was Carlton’s “Kat moment.” He thought he landed a good jab only to find out that he was about to be knocked out. Joey zinged back with a rumor of his own – that Carlton had slid into his “best friend’s ex-wife’s bed” before the ink was dry on the divorce papers.

Even that wasn’t what brought the double date to an end. I kind of want the Vanessa role, an eyewitness to all the drama without really having to engage.

Nicky With the New Hair

Things didn’t get better for Carlton after the date. I knew the minute he opened his mouth and insinuated that the reason Nicole was so worked up about Vanessa was because she was “projecting” that his night was about to get even worse – and I didn’t think that was possible.

Carlton did his best to explain himself – Nicole had endured a divorce, her mother’s cancer diagnosis, and a host of other things in a short period of time. But it was a wrap the minute he said that Nicole had started to act “out of character” with her new hair and clothes.

I’ve made it known that I think Carlton is a bit too cocky for my taste, but I really appreciated how he didn’t leave with a hot-headed remark. He apologized for his “clumsy and well-intended” words and assured Nicole that he loved spending time with “every iteration” of Nicole.

There was a bit of a fake out there that got me good. Carlton took a long, long pause after dropping the word “love.” I thought he was going to admit that he loved Nicole. But, no. He simply loved spending time with her.

Beside, Behind, and Beyond The Gates: The Speed Round

Here are some of the thoughts and observations about other things happening on Beyond the Gates.

Love Is a Four-letter Word

Speaking of love, Ted got himself in a bit of trouble by using that four-letter word in conversation with Shanice. It’s a total buzzkill. It seems the more serious her relationship with Ted becomes the less fun it is to watch. I’m not about to tell anyone what to do, but I think Shanice might want to talk to someone about her issues.

Family Tree Shake-up

As Eva was thanking Joey for all that he had done for Izaiah, a crazy thought crossed my mind. Luckily, I have a DVR and was able to zoom in on the bill that got Hayley so shook. In addition to lodging and valet parking, Lynette indulged in a Botox facial for $1200, two one-hour massages at $350 a pop, a tea time service for $189.95, six “designer dress” purchases that totaled over $7100. There were a bunch of other charges, but if you take all of those non-lodging expenses off the bill, it would put the nightly rate for her room at under $700 – which is a steal at a five-star hotel in any major metropolitan area.

Lynette is living large at the Bowman Hotel on Bill and Hayley’s dime. | Beyond the Gates | PHOTO: CBS/Screenshot

I Won’t Have What She’s Having

While Nicole might not have liked what Carlton said about her acting out of character, she sort of proved him right by running straight from their fight into Kial’s bed. Watching Dani and Bill be civil this week almost made me forget how crappily he treated her a little more than a year ago. That said, the chemistry between Karla Mosley (Dani Dupree) and Timon Kyle Durrett (Bill Hamilton) is so good. I like watching them be friends and I like watching them spar. While I am sure that they were happy in their marriage at one point, I think that chapter has closed and I don’t want to see them reunite.

Coming In Hot

It occurred to me this week that Deanna McBride has two settings: 100% and 200%. I don’t think we’ve seen her have a chill moment since she made her debut earlier this year. To be fair, she’s had very little to be chill about. When Deanna started yelling and Vanessa — in public, no less — I wondered if they’d have Vanessa holler back. She did and that felt very real, unlike some of granola and twigs parenting I’ve seen recently.

It probably wasn’t the easiest conversation for Vanessa to have with Deanna and Donnell, but it was a little troubling to hear Vanessa lie about when she started having sexytimes with Joey. The truth will eventually come out and, this being a soap, it will more than likely happen only after Vanessa and Deanna get back on good terms. That, of course, means mom and daughter will once again be at odds. And Donnell might not be thrilled that his mother lied, either.

Bringing Sexy Back

I know that I shouldn’t really go scrolling through social media, but I was bored while on hold one day this week and I came across a salacious thread that claimed an actor on another soap was refusing to do any sort of love scenes or kissing because it was against their morals.

I have no idea whether it’s true or not – and that really doesn’t matter for the purpose of this column or anyone else’s everyday life. What it did do, though, was make me realize that Beyond the Gates has been incredibly spicy without being overtly sexual. Yes, there have been some sexy moments – like Carlton hoisting Nicole into the air to make love to her against the wall – but there are other moments that seem spicier than they are because they rely on our imagination. For example, this week we saw Dani standing over Andre and dropping her undergarments. What we saw was the back of Dani’s legs and said panties hitting the ground. It was surprisingly provocative in today’s daytime environment.

BTG: Behind the Graphic

If you are wondering what the heck this week’s header image is all about, you’re in luck. I know the guy who created the graphic so I was able to get some answers. And yes, “the guy” is me.

The $20 burger is what Ted passed up eating so that he could sample Shanice’s homemade power bars. The $0 drink is and a nod to the free drinks Kat and Chelsea score by flirting with bartenders. The pricey hotel is the current tab Lynette has racked up. And the “half off” pants are a wink to Dani feeling up her husband.

Quick Takes

It’s a really small detail, but I liked that Beyond the Gates filmed Grayson and Jacob’s drop in an actual stairwell. It felt more real than a constructed set. Plus, it allowed for some fun camera angles of DracLia (This was a working nickname for Lia, but I like it so much that I think I am making it permanent.) spying on Grayson.

Ted sure does keep some strange company. The woman he is dating is afraid of birds and his best friend and business partner is afraid of rabbits.

This week that weird space adjacent to the coffeeshop was given a name. It’s “The Atrium.” I still have no idea what the space actually is.

I loved Dani’s rapid-fire trip down Saturday morning cartoon memory lane.

I chuckled inappropriately when Vanessa said that she wished Deanna could see the parts of Joey that only she sees. Um, no ma’am… you do not.

It’s fun that Anita’s EGOT status makes it so easy for the Beyond the Gates team to have celebrities drop on by Fairmont Crest. I thought this week’s special guest was going to be Jill Scott, since Dani made a reference to “Jilly From Philly” the other week. But Jennifer Holliday is always welcome on my screen.

Beyond the Gates: Lines of the Week

The Beyond the Gates writing team seems to be having a little too much fun.
