Can Drew keep his promise to Willow that she won’t lose her kids? Will Nina blow up the court hearing with a bombshell about Sasha? Meanwhile, Gio’s world has imploded, and Lois is facing the music for her choices. It’s all about family affairs in this week’s General Hospital commentary for the week ending May 30, 2025.

Family drama was front and center this week on General Hospital and I loved it. Wow. There were so many powerful performances, and every episode was a must see. I can’t remember the last time I was this excited to tune in each and every day. I’m not alone. Several of my friends and co-workers who watch General Hospital were equally eager to see what would unfold next. No one was disappointed, and almost everyone agreed that Drew needs to be taken down. Let’s start there with Michael’s long-awaited return. It’s been glorious from the start.

Father knows best

Michael came out swinging and reminded Willow that their children come first — not her fickle heart.

I have loved every single scene that Rory Gibson has been in since his first appearance at the Nurses Ball. He has jumped into Michael’s shoes and taken off running. It’s not often that a recast fits in so seamlessly, but it honestly feels like Rory has been playing Michael for years. He has a natural chemistry with everyone, and his scenes have been fire.

The writing for Michael deserves accolades too. It feels like the writers have heard our complaints about Drew and Willow and they’ve given us someone to dispense the justice that we’ve been asking for. It’s been thrilling to watch, and I have high hopes for the upcoming hearing. Hopes that I didn’t have when Carly was leading the charge to get the kids away from Willow. Michael has proven to be a worthy adversary, and I’m delighted to see that he’s ten steps ahead of Drew.

The children must come first — even on General Hospital

Not only did Michael wisely secure temporary custody of his children, but he also made prior arrangements to have Amelia picked up and taken to Carly’s mansion. Michael also had Jason on standby to stop Willow and Drew from making a scene when Michael took Wiley home. It was so satisfying to watch that smirk disappear from Drew’s smug face.

Willow is finally coming to the realization that she doesn’t have the upper hand or an inherent right to primary custody of the children simply because she is Wiley and Amelia’s mother. That pleases me immensely. It’s also nice to see someone truly holding her feet to the fire and calling her out for putting her own needs ahead of her children. I applauded Michael for giving Willow an ultimatum because it turns out the kids weren’t as happy with their new living situation as Willow had led everyone to believe.

Kudos to the writers for finally addressing that too.

Willow’s priority is Drew and only Drew

From the start, Michael has put the kids first. Willow has not. It’s why she was surprised when Michael shared that Wiley had been unhappy living at great-uncle Drew’s house. The fact that Willow had been oblivious to her son’s distress spoke volumes. Drew has dominated her attention, and Michael is done indulging her. “It’s time to choose, Willow. Who do you love more — Drew or our kids?” Michael had asked.

Cold, but necessary. Drew is not a good guy, which Willow would know if she would just open her eyes. Unfortunately, she refuses. For the life of me, I just can’t understand why. As a mother, I wouldn’t hesitate to choose my kids. Every day, all day. From what I can tell, Willow barely considered it. She slid into the passenger seat of Drew’s car looking for a reason to choose him. Drew obliged by painting a bleak picture in which she was alone and vulnerable without him.

An honorable man would have stepped aside.

Sasha’s explosive secret

That brings me to Sasha.

Nina has figured out that Michael is likely the father of Sasha’s unborn child. Nina is certain that she could secure Willow full custody of the children by dropping that little bombshell in court during the divorce hearing. I disagree. As much as Nina would like to pretend otherwise, Michael was not the first to betray his wedding vows. That dishonor belongs to Willow, and Willow alone. Infidelity isn’t about just about sex.

Michael and Willow’s marriage became irrevocably broken when Willow began an emotional affair with her husband’s uncle months prior to her being caught doing the nasty with Drew in the nursery. Drew and Willow had shared two passionate kisses and embraces during that time, as well as confessed their romantic feelings for each other. It was the discovery of that betrayal that had sent a brokenhearted Michael to the bar to drown his sorrows.

Luckily, Nina sees the folly in giving Willow that win in court. As hard as it might be to watch, Nina realizes that it might be best for Willow to lose custody of the children. She hopes it will make Willow see how bad Drew has been for Willow and finally leave him.

Still, Nina could end Willow and Drew in a heartbeat with the revelation that Drew has a dirty secret of his own.

Nina, General Hospital’s cowardly ninny

Nina is a coward — and an idiot. I have no idea why she’s been so afraid to tell Willow that Drew was knocking boots with Nina long before he began sniffing around Willow. That reflects badly on Drew not Nina. Nina was unaware that Drew had been stealing kisses with Willow. She learned about that after the affair between Willow and Drew began.

Drew lied to both Nina and Willow. Even if he were to try to accuse Nina of pursuing him, he still shagged Nina while making crazy eyes at Willow. I get that Nina is afraid Willow will be mad because Nina didn’t speak up sooner, but that’s the price she will have to pay to get Willow out of that toxic situation. Once Willow sees Drew for who he really is, she will forgive her mother.

Will Nina tell Ric about Michael and Sasha’s love child? I hope not because Willow is deep in the cult of Drew. She’s going to have to hit rock bottom before she can break free of him and his manipulative ways. And there’s no doubt that Drew has nefarious intentions because we learned during Fridays’ episode that Drew had been talking to Wiley about Michael. What other insidious things has Drew planted in that poor child’s head?

No drama mamas

Normally, I would root for parents — even on soaps — to work together, but Willow has been blind to all the red flags floating around Drew’s head. I know what a vile creep he is, so as a viewer I have no desire to see the kids near Drew’s wicked ways.

Michael is no saint, but at least he’s honest. I appreciated that he took responsibility for some of the cracks in his marriage by acknowledging that he had held a part of himself back. Michael had tried to show Willow only the best parts of himself because he thought she was darn near perfect. That’s a big self-own. One that I haven’t seen from Willow. She’s always the victim in her narrative.

The cult of Drew

Willow has exposed Wiley and Amelia to months of instability by bouncing them from one home to another. She’s made selfish choices starting with taking Wiley on an out-of-state trip with her new lover without so much as letting Michael know. She also used a medical proxy as leverage to keep Michael’s family away from him when he was in critical condition. Now, we’ve learned that Wiley has been unhappy at Drew’s house and Willow had no clue. That’s not a mother putting her children first.

I also notice that Willow keeps referring to Wiley and Amelia as “my kids” or “my children” when talking to Michael. Not Michael. He always says, “our kids.”

Until Willow gets away from Drew, I’d rather see Wiley and Amelia with their father.

Gio’s newfound family

In other family matters, Gio is reeling. He has learned that his whole life was built on a lie. It’s a gut-punch, but in time, the shock and anger will subside. His musical talent might not have come from Camilla, but she recognized it in him and nurtured it. They might not have shared DNA, but they did share a deep love for the violin. That is the gift she gave him, and nothing can take that away from him.

Once again, our General Hospital scribes delivered soap gold.

Giovanni Mazza has been absolutely incredible since Gio learned the truth about his birth. His scenes with Tracy have been some of my favorite. He held his own with a powerhouse like Jane Elliot and had me ugly crying as Tracy tried to get through to a devasted Gio. Tracy’s reaction to the news that Gio was her great-grandson was everything. Touching, heartbreaking, and beautiful all at once. I saw the exact moment that Tracy fell completely and utterly in love with her great-grandson. The pride in her eyes was unmistakable.

I can’t wait to watch Gio and Tracy forge a bond. It’s going to be wonderful, and Lois will soon see just how wrong she was about the Quartermaines.

Lois faces the music

Lois infuriated me this week. Her pain meant nothing to me. She wanted absolution, but she showed little remorse except for being caught. She betrayed everyone by putting her own wants and needs first. I say this because all I heard was a bunch of selfish excuses to justify her choices.

What Lois did was wrong. She had no legal right to make decisions about the placement of Brook Lynn’s son. The argument that Lois had feared the baby would end up with the Quartermaines is poppycock because Gio would have gone to Dante if Brook Lynn didn’t want to raise him. Even if the Qs had taken Gio in, they would have loved and protected him. Ned would have made sure of it.

I’m also annoyed that Lois clearly called her mother for reinforcement to pressure Brook Lynn into forgiving her. I hope it backfires, and Brook Lynn gives them both the boot. Lois and Gloria need to spend some time in Bensonhurst reflecting on the error of their ways. They have some nerve judging the Qs when they spent decades lying to Brook Lynn and Gio.

Olivia reads Lois like a book

Watching General Hospital this week was such a treat. We got some epic showdowns including the confrontation between Olivia and Lois. It was sooo good, which surprised me a little. I felt worse for Olivia than I did Ned.

Lois insisted that all she did was support Brook Lynn’s decision like any good mother would, but Olivia saw through the lie. “You did what was best for you. You set it up so that you could keep your grandson close and not have to share him with anyone — not even his mother. Shame on you” Olivia spat. Later, Olivia asked the question that many of us have been wondering. “Did you ever even talk to Brook Lynn about the possibility of keeping her baby?” As Olivia pointed out, no one is ever ready to be a mother, especially a scared teen. Lisa LoCicero was brilliant in these scenes.

Naturally, Lois tried to throw Olivia’s teenage pregnancy back at her, but it fell flat. Sonny was a mobster, so it was a matter of safety to keep Dante’s paternity a secret. With Gio, it was about Lois keeping him close.

Dante denied a voice and a choice

I love General Hospital, but I have an issue with how fathers are often treated on this show. It’s as if their rights take a back seat to the moms. There are a few exceptions like Sonny and Jason, but pretty much whenever a mother faces a choice with her unborn child, a father doesn’t get a voice. Dante appears to be no exception.

Dante is full of regret because he now realizes what a complete turd he’s been. It’s a bit of a shame that it took learning that Gio was his son for Dante to come to that realization, but he gets a pass right now because I feel so bad for him that he was never given an opportunity to be a part of Gio’s life. As he told Brook Lynn, he never had a choice in the matter because Brook Lynn took it away by not telling him about the pregnancy.

Brook Lynn had every right to decide not to be a mother, but she also had an obligation to be honest with her baby’s father. Dante could have — and likely would have — raised their son as a single father.

General Hospital Quick Takes

Who else hit rewind when Mac stopped by Carly’s house to talk to Michael and Jason about the kidnapping accusations that Drew and Willow had made? I thought I had missed a scene when Mac had seemingly vanished into thin air without explanation only to turn up at the police station with answers for Willow.

Speaking of missed scenes, when exactly did Portia tell Curtis about her plot with Nina to drug Drew? That was a pretty big confession that I would have liked to have seen.

Drew has some nerve. He snatched up Lila’s ring like he was Gollum himself and reminded Willow that he was Lila’s grandson. This is the same grandson who just a few weeks earlier was ready to toss Lila’s coffin out in the street and tear down her final resting place. I hope every dead Quartermaine haunts him.

What General Hospital viewers are saying

Nothing but praise for Giovanni Mazza and Jane Elliot

“I had to go to the Video and watch Gio like Six More Times.
