Why do the bad guys keep winning? Soapy drama is great but is it worth it when there’s no reckoning for dirty deeds? How long can Drew hide is true nature from Willow? Should Sonny sell to Sidwell or find another way out? What happens when Lois’ secret is finally exposed? Let’s discuss in a new General Hospital commentary for the week ending May 16, 2025.

Folks, soaps are my guilty pleasure. I love watching characters face challenges and navigate difficult situations — often poorly — because good ultimately prevails. Soap justice may take a bit, but karma comes for everyone eventually. Or at least, it used to.

War of the Corinthoses

Six months ago, Willow and Michael’s marriage blew up when he found out that Willow had done more than kiss Drew. She had sexual relations with his uncle on the nursery room floor. Worse, it was all caught on a nanny cam for him to see. Ouch. There’s no coming back from that, so off to divorce court they went.

From the start, Michael tried to do what was best for the kids. He didn’t want Wiley and Amelia to suffer the way that he and Morgan had whenever Carly and Sonny broke up. Michael hoped for an amicable divorce for the sake of the children. On the other hand, Willow has been her own worst enemy from the jump because she keeps taking bad advice from Drew.

Willow sees herself through the lens of victim. Her only sin? Falling in love, and she just can’t understand why she should be punished for that.

The blame game

Some are quick to defend Willow by pointing out that Michael slept with Sasha and got her pregnant, as if that somehow equates to a months-long emotional affair. Don’t get me wrong. Both are wrong, but a drunken ONS during moment of weakness isn’t the same as months of lying and betrayal. The latter is intentional and insidious.

Willow likes to further mitigate the damage and pain she caused her soon-to-be ex-husband by insisting that there had been problems in the marriage for a while. Yes, there had been problems. She had kept her cancer a secret and almost left Wiley without a mother and Michael a widower. She had decided — without any evidence — that Michael wouldn’t support her choices.

Michael also kept secrets. He threatened to expose Nina’s role in tipping off the SEC to Drew and Carly’s insider trading unless Nina kept her distance from Willow and the kids. Nina agreed, but she still found plenty of ways to work around that rule. However, Willow and Michael worked through all of that, and they seemed happy and in a good place until Willow smacked lips with Drew on the 4th of July.

That was the first sign of trouble that I saw.

Corinthos vs Corinthos

I used to love Willow, but this relationship with Drew has ruined her for me. For some reason, she has an all-or-nothing philosophy about the kids. She acknowledges that Michael is a good father, but she insists that the kids belong with her. No mention of shared custody these days, which I find disturbing. Even during her conversation with Isaiah, she seemed closed to the idea. She talked about what a great father Drew was and how they were building a new family together. She seemed to have this idea that she should be allowed to dole out visits to Michael when she deemed appropriate simply because she is the children’s mother.

Willow — and Drew — don’t seem to realize how ridiculous and unreasonable they sound. Michael was the wronged party. He’s also a sympathetic character because he’d been gravely injured and underwent extensive and painful medical treatments. Treatments that Willow and Drew intend to weaponize by accusing Michael of abandoning his children. What? Any decent judge would see right through that disgusting ploy and rule against them just on principle.

Michael didn’t move to Germany. He has lived in Port Charles his entire life and he has filed for custody, which a father who had abandoned his children wouldn’t do. Also, since when do video chats with the kids not count unless they go through Willow? Willow sounded like an idiot when she told Ric that Michael only talked to the kids when Kristina was around. Newsflash Willow, that’s not proof of Michael deserting his children; it’s his prerogative.

Karma is long overdue on General Hospital

I’m so tired of Drew and Willow winning. It’s been nearly a year since that first kiss and there haven’t been any real repercussions or a reckoning for either of them. Drew is a diabolical shell of the honorable man he once was, and Willow is straight up delusional.

More than anything, I want this madness to end. This is not entertaining. It’s painful and frustrating to watch. Willow comes off as weak, gullible and selfish. Her kindness is limited to those who agree with her and support her poor choices. She is doing to her children what Harmony did to her. Taking them away from their father and handing them to a man who doesn’t care about them.

It’s long past time for Drew to pay for his sins. If Willow wants to stand by her man, then she can do it without Wiley and Amelia. They shouldn’t be pawns in Drew’s treacherous plan. More than ever, I’m convinced that Drew doesn’t love Willow. She’s merely a means to an end.

Time for Kristina to pay for her sins too

I’m adding the General Hospital writers to the list of people who coddle Kristina.

I don’t care how regretful Kristina is about cutting the brake lines of Ric’s car. It means nothing if she doesn’t go to the police and own up to what she did. All the heart-to-heart talks with her loved ones and proclamations that she’s ready to move forward means nothing. Talk is cheap, especially with Kristina. I’m not fooled one bit. Kristina remains a ticking time bomb.

This is a pattern with Kristina. She does something terrible, gets busted, expresses remorse, and then moves on as if everything is better. It usually is because Sonny and Alexis clean up the mess and make excuses for her destructive choices. Kristina has never taken full responsibility for the damage she causes, so ends up repeating history.

What happens when she learns that Ric and Ava have been blackmailing Alexis? Nothing good, that’s what.

General Hospital’s Liars Club

Poor Elizabeth. Both of her exes are liars. With Ric, it’s to be expected, but with Lucky…it’s the last straw.

This week, Lucky tracked down Ric’s car to the same storage unit that Spinelli pointed Alexis to. Too bad for them, Ava and Ric were one step ahead. All that was left was a puddle of brake fluid and a note. With a little prodding, Alexis spilled the beans to Lucky about Ric and Ava’s blackmail.

I’m pissed. Elizabeth deserves better, and frankly so does Aiden. Lucky is choosing to protect Kristina over being honest with Elizabeth. The woman he claims to love. Why? It’s such a betrayal of trust and makes zero sense.

My only consolation was the conversation that Elizabeth had with Lucas. She seemed to recognize that she and Lucky are two fundamentally different people. He likes to ride off into the sunset in search of adventure (hence Luke gave Lucky the nickname “Cowboy”) while Elizabeth prefers being settled in Port Charles surrounded by cherished friends and family. Elizabeth will be hurt, but her heart won’t be broken and for that I’m glad.

Now that Isaiah is single again, maybe sparks will fly between him and Elizabeth at work.

The intern war

Meanwhile, at Port Charles University, things are heating up with Professor Dalton. After handing in a corrupted file, Dalton decided to pass on Emma and offer Josslyn the summer internship. Emma did not take the news well. She was livid and felt betrayed by Josslyn. All justified, but the devastation seemed a bit misplaced. I know that Emma wanted to get evidence to prove that Dalton is engaged in animal testing on cats and dogs, but why not just try to enlist Josslyn to help?

Emma acted like the class itself, and therefore the position, was important to her personally. It’s not. At least, that was the impression I had when Emma told Joss why she needed to land the internship. I’ll give Emma a pass on being a drama queen though. She’s young and a passionate activist. Emma is one of the bright spots on General Hospital right now.

Same dance, different partner

My hope is that Gio will help put things in perspective for Emma, and that Emma and Joss will join forces to take down Dalton. Until then, Joss will be stuck two-stepping with Vaughn to the soap trope, “I hate you, but I’m also attracted to you.” Boring and predictable. We saw this same dance with Dex, whom Vaughn bears a striking resemblance to. Joss definitely has a type.

General Hospital desperately needs some romance. The only relationships that seem to last these days are the toxic ones — with one or two exceptions. I want the writers to wow me. To hook me with an unexpected romance between two characters I can root for and who make each other better people. I had high hopes for Lucky and Elizabeth, but we clearly can’t have nice things.

Happy birthday, Gio

During Friday’s episode, Brook Lynn mentioned that it was her son’s birthday. However, Gio told Donna that his birthday was June 4, which begs the question, why the deception? Was the lie about Gio’s birthday another way to keep Brook Lynn from figuring out that Lois had kept Gio in the family?

I feel terrible for Gio. Everything about his life has been a lie right down to his birthday. It’s wrong, and I’m getting to the point that I don’t care how the secret comes out. I just want it out. Not for Dante, but for Gio. Love doesn’t change. Camille will always be the mother who raised him for the first10 years of his life, but he deserves to know who he is. He’s not a child.

I thought Cody’s conversation with Lulu was particularly poignant because Cody spoke as someone who has stood in Gio’s shoes. I found myself agreeing with everything Cody said.

Father doesn’t always know best

I know that Dante is hurting, but I really hate how pigheaded he’s being about Gio. What I hate more than that is the likelihood that Dante will only have a change of heart once he learns Gio is his son. Poor kid. It shouldn’t take that for Dante to accept that Rocco and Rocco alone is responsible for making poor choices that night. I love that Rocco recognizes that at least. Gio will have Rocco to talk to and of course Emma. 💜

An end of an era for General Hospital?

To my surprise, Sonny actually considered Sidwell’s offer to buy the piers. Sonny thought it might his off ramp to retirement and a great way to get his good friend Laura out of hot water with her constituents. Jason immediately raised concerns, including the fact that Sidwell is still a very bad guy. Laura had similar objections and implored Sonny to save Port Charles from Sidwell’s evil ways.

As much as I would love to see Sonny and Jason retire, I do not want to see the rise of Sidwell. If the mob storylines must continue, then I would rather see a new generation of mobsters with a heart of gold be ushered in. Honestly, Brennan would make a perfect successor. He’s a wonderful mix of bad and good.

General Hospital Quick Takes

I cracked up when Josslyn locked Dalton’s office door and slid on a pair of gloves to search his office. Girl, you’re his intern. That’s unnecessary. Equally lame was the way both Joss and Vaughn swept the office with their little spy devices. A passing glance would have been more thorough.

Lulu could save herself a lot of time and energy by simply getting a DNA sample from Gio and Dante to run a paternity test. She needs to talk to Felicia. Stat.

Why is Willow still wearing Lila’s ring? Shouldn’t she take it off now that she’s shacked up with Drew? I doubt Lila would want her wearing it.

Last week, news broke that Denise Alexander had passed away. I felt a bit blindsided. My first thought, “It’s too soon.” We’d just lost Leslie Charleson (Monica Quartermaine), and now this. It broke my heart. We have some sad days ahead of us on General Hospital. I expect a proper tribute to Lesley after we say goodbye to Monica. Until then, my dear friend Dan J Kroll wrote a beautiful tribute to Denise, which included a podcast that both Denise and her television daughter Genie Francis appeared on.
