Will Lulu figure out Lois’ dirty little secret? Can Sonny hold onto his piers — and power — or will fate force him into retirement? Will Willow regret signing Drew’s parental guardianship papers? It’s time to dive into all the red flag warnings of imminent danger in an all-new General Hospital commentary for the week ending April 18, 2024.

I’ve come to the conclusion that everyone in Port Charles is color blind because I’ve never seen so many people willfully ignore all the red flags fluttering around their heads. Top of the list of people who have zero sense of impending doom, or a smidgen of common sense is our newly crowned village idiot, Willow.

No rest for the wicked, especially on General Hospital

Willow truly is an imbecile. That’s the kindest thing I can say about her these days. She is blinded by lust, which means red flags appear green to her. The man she loves is an illusion because he only exists in their carefully crafted bubble. The real Drew has thrown away all of his friends through lies and betrayals, his family has disowned him for similar reasons, and he’s a complete failure as a congressman. Instead of working in Washington, D.C. serving on committees, toiling away on legislation — and voting — he’s at home scheming against enemies of his own making.

Despite all of that, Willow sees Drew as a heroic figure. She actually believes that he was justified in weaponizing the remains of his dead relatives — including his father and siblings — to punish Tracy. It’s shameful. Willow is easily manipulated with romantic drivel and self-serving lies. She also thrives on playing the victim. In that regard, she’s exactly like her twin, Nelle. Willow’s predicament is of her own making too, and she deserves every bit of misery coming her way. Unfortunately, her kids are also likely to pay a price for their mother’s poor choices.

Good foresight or evil masterplan?

One of those poor choices was Willow’s decision to sign Drew’s legal document appointing him legal guardian to the children if anything should happen to Willow. Even if Drew were on the up-and-up, which he most certainly isn’t, it would have behooved Willow to proceeded with caution. She should have had a lawyer look things over for no other reason than to make sure it couldn’t be used against her in the custody hearing.

As soon as Drew produced those papers, I knew he’d been plotting this for some time. This was part of his masterplan. I’m certain of it. Drew had vowed to destroy Michael and take everything that Michael held dear away from him. Willow sealed her fate. I fully expect something to happen to her and for the guardianship to come into play.

Side note: I saw this great clip of Cameron Mathison on LIVE with Kelly and Mark talking about Drew — and another character he played on All My Children. A nice reminder that Cameron is nothing like Drew — or Ryan Lavery.

Love is not enough

I have no doubt that Willow loves her children, but she is not a good mother. For months, I’ve been watching her put herself first. She made no real effort to stay away from Drew. Willow is drawn to the forbidden — likely because of her upbringing in a cult — so the lure of a scandalous liaison was catnip to her. She has put her emotional needs ahead of Wiley and Amelia, and she is more focused on starting a life with Drew than doing what’s best for her children.

Wiley and Amelia have bounced around from one home to the next since Christmas, all the while not seeing their father or even being told what was really going on with him. In her mind, the kids are fine because they love Drew. It’s ridiculous. Michael still has custodial rights, and it is past time that they were asserted. Willow needs a taste of her own medicine.

No more Sonny days on General Hospital?

PHOTO: Disney/Christine Bartolucci

It seems like everyone is gunning for Sonny these days. Someone set a firebomb in his penthouse that seriously injured his son, Drew is colluding with Ezra Boyle to seize the piers, and now Natalia has betrayed his trust and told Jenz about Sonny’s heart issues. Oh, and there’s a new A.D.A who is eager to make a name for herself by taking down the great and powerful Sonny Corinthos. On top of all of that, Sonny needs surgery.

Sonny was a fool to ever trust Natalia. She’s been a walking red flag since her arrival. He should know that she no longer has any reason to guard his secrets, which means the cat will soon be out of the bag. I just don’t understand why Sonny doesn’t see his health issues as fate giving him an opportunity to bow out. Months ago, Sonny and Jason talked about taking steps to retire from the mob. Sonny had hoped to pass the reins to Jason, but Jason made it clear that he couldn’t take them because he was Danny’s only parent. I would think, given that conversation and Sonny’s heart troubles, that the time to announce his retirement was now.

Sonny could turn everything over to Selina Wu and let her and Jenz battle it out.

A new era for General Hospital

I think it would be fascinating to see Sonny and Jason explore a new path. They still have their coffee business which will keep them on the piers and in the thick of things if danger should lurk. However, instead of being part of the criminal activity, Sonny and Jason could be the first line of defense by helping Anna and Mac root it out the evildoers.

I have a feeling that Jenz will give everyone a run for their money because he’s had nefarious intentions written all over him since day one. Contrary to what Marco believes, Jenz is not a good guy. Viewers saw exactly what Jenz was capable of during his days in Africa. Jenz has an agenda, and it’s for certainly not good for the people of Port Charles.

I would love to see everyone team up to run Jenz out of town. He can take that backstabbing Natalia with him.

Alexis jumps from the frying pan into Ava’s fire

Last week, I blasted Alexis for conspiring with Diane to thwart Ava’s blackmail scheme by having Kristina committed before Kristina could be arrested for three counts of attempted murder. In the end, Alexis chose not to commit Kristina, but she made the situation worse by agreeing to Ava’s demands. Alexis funneled money out of Ace’s trust fund and into an offshore account. Foolish woman. Ava made it clear that she intends to milk Alexis dry.

This will blow up in Alexis’ face. Unfortunately, I fear that Molly will be the one to pay the highest price.

General Hospital history

I like Marcos Rios, but I found his conversation with Alexis a bit silly when he tried to defend representing his father, Jenz Sidwell, by pointing out that Alexis’ clients are criminals too. That’s generally how it works, Marco. Criminals hire criminal defense attorneys.

Also, for context, Alexis did not adopt the “Davis” surname to hide her Cassadine roots. Her birth name was Natasha Alexandria Mikkosovna Cassadine, but it was changed after Helena murdered Alexis’ mother. Helena had used the same deadly dagger that Jenz had recently offered to return to Alexis. Mikkos was furious with Helena, so he decided to rename his young daughter “Alexis Davidovitch” and raise her as the orphaned daughter of a distant Cassadine relative. It was Helena’s punishment for murdering Mikkos’ beloved mistress. Eventually, Alexis chose to anglicize Davidovitch to Davis.

Alexis grew up in a den of vicious vipers. It was so much more complicated than Marcos’ relationship with Jenz.

Chase-ing a dream

Chase’s desire to be a father hasn’t changed, but it’s taking a different path. He and Brook Lynn decided that they would adopt. More importantly, they will be open to whatever child finds their way to them, whether that child was an infant, a toddler, or even a teen. I love that so much. Being a parent isn’t about biology; it’s about love.

Our orphanages and foster care systems are filled with children of all ages in need of a good loving home.

Of course, viewers know that Chase and Brook Lynn will get their wish sooner rather than later when Lulu connects the dots. It’s not going to be hard for Lulu to figure things out because Lois practically oozes proud Nonna vibes whenever she is near Gio. Lois also gets a panic-stricken expression every time Gio talks about his mom.

I can’t help but worry how Chase might react to the news. My gut tells me that the reason he was so eager to keep Brook Lynn’s secret was because he felt threatened by Dante. A part of him resents that Dante was able to give Brook Lynn what Chase never could. I get it. He’s still struggling to come to terms with his infertility. But still waters run deep. Someone like Chase is bound to go dark sooner or later.

It wouldn’t be General Hospital if there wasn’t that potential.

Bad Nonnas

Lois and — to a lesser degree — Gloria will each need to work hard to atone for their sins. The moment Brook Lynn expressed an interest in finding her son, they both owed her the truth. Instead, both mother and grandmother talked Brook Lynn out of it. It was such a red flag because both women have always bent over backwards to indulge Brook Lynn, even some of her worst impulses. Brook Lynn should have known something was up.

I adore Lois, but I’m so frustrated with her right now. Lois knows where her grandson is, and she gets to spend time with him whenever she wants. She’s never had to go without being a part of his life, even if she couldn’t publicly acknowledge that Gio was her grandson. Lois never had to wonder how Gio was doing or try to envision what he looked like. She never had to worry if he was okay or had a happy childhood. Lois even had the opportunity to have a close and loving relationship with him knowing that he was her grandson.

Brook Lynn was denied most of that. Lois and Gloria know that they would have to expose their own dirty little secret if they were to tell Brook Lynn that Gio was her son. If they admit to what they had done, Brook Lynn would rightfully feel betrayed. Gio too. They’d rather protect themselves than do right by Brook Lynn, Gio, and even Dante

General Hospital Quick Takes

Daniel Goddard as Professor Dalton on General Hospital | PHOTO: (Disney/Christine Bartolucci)

Professor Dalton (Daniel Goddard) gave off such a creepy vibe when he offered Emma an opportunity to intern for him over the summer. One of my favorite scenes this week was his visit with Carly to tell her about Marco’s encounter with Jason. After Carly told Lucas about Jenz’s little crime spree and assured him that Jack had quietly taken care of everything, Lucas had the perfect response. “”Oh, Jack took care of it.” Well, then I guess everything is good now, ” Lucas said in a delightfully sarcastic tone. I cracked up. Van Hansis is absolutely wonderful in the role, and I so enjoy seeing Lucas match Carly’s energy.

Why did I picture Tracy’s steed as a feisty black stallion? Not in a million years would I have guessed that gentle white horse with brown patches, which Cody rode in on, was the infamous Hades.

What General Hospital viewers are saying

Willow’s inability to see Drew’s true nature

“Liz, Nina’s grown on me too, but I partially blame her for Willow’s blindness of who Drew really is.
