Let’s discuss the good, the bad, and everything in between in this week’s General Hospital commentary for the week ending February 14, 2025.

I love Valentine’s Day because I’m a hopeless romantic. I have four bookcases filled with romance novels of every genre and have been known to spend weekends binge-watching rom-coms. I’m especially partial to anything Jane Austin. In 1995, while other couples were exchanging gifts and declarations of love over dinner, my husband and I spent Valentine’s Day at the hospital awaiting the birth of our firstborn. He ultimately made his appearance on the 15th, but that year still rates as my favorite Valentine’s Day. Ever.

This week, love was in the air on General Hospital, but trouble loomed. Let’s kick things off with my least favorite pairing.

No love for Willow and Drew on Valentine’s Day

Willow has been knocked off her pedestal of perfection and she doesn’t like it. She resents being called out for the faithless wife she is. In her fairytale world, she and Drew have a love that just can’t be denied. Least of all by a pesky husband. Willow wants to be able to play house with Drew and the kids without being judged as an adulteress. Too bad she’s a serial cheater.

What frustrates me about Willow is how self-serving she has become. One minute she’s all about putting the kids first and finding a way forward with an amicable divorce. In the next breath, she decides the best course of action is to dig up dirt on Michael to use as a bargaining chip in divorce negotiations.

The same thing happened when she decided to use the medical proxy that Michael gave her by blocking his family from seeing him until Tracy produced the kids. At first, she nixed the idea, but then went all in. At no point, since this whole affair with Drew started has Willow put her kids first. Not that I’ve seen. It’s always what she wants not what they need.

Even now, knowing that Michael will be gone for an extended time receiving treatment for his burns, she thinks the kids will be perfectly happy having Great-uncle Drew step into the role of daddy. I’m so disgusted by this pairing that I would be perfectly happy if the writers sent them both over a cliff to their deaths.

I don’t see love between Willow and Drew. I see lust — and a whole lot of delusion.

The blame game

Willow’s conversation with Nina was equally annoying. I hated how Willow partially blamed Michael for the marriage falling apart. She tried to equate Michael not telling her about that recording until after the holidays to her spending months carrying on an emotional affair and kissing his uncle.

Willow needs for Michael to be the bad guy so she can feel justified in cheating. It’s almost as abhorrent as using a critically injured burn patient as a bargaining chip. That is a stain on her character that will forever follow her.

I know that Michael has his own secrets and that he’s not innocent. However, he has more than atoned for his sins by consistently putting the children first and treating Willow with far more respect than she has treated him. Also, that firebomb left him with horrific injuries that has now taken him away from his kids and family, while Willow seems to be getting everything she wants. It’s unfair and imbalanced.

A Narly Valentine’s Day union

Nina and Carly (Narly) have decided to join forces and take Drew down because they can see what Willow refuses to. This was a completely unexpected union that I find myself rooting for. Is this the beginning of a beautiful friendship? Probably not, but at least Nina and Carly are no longer hissing and spitting at each other. They have Drew in their sights and the arrogant jerk will not see them coming.

Nina just needs to come clean to Willow about sleeping with Drew. I want Willow to know that Drew is not the honorable man he pretends to be.

Port Charles’ resident dunce

Clearly, Martin lost far more than his unique southern drawl. A good number of his IQ points seem to have vanished too. Does he truly believe that Willow shacking up with Drew won’t hurt her case or have a negative impact on the kids? If so, he’s as delusional as they are.

Then there’s Martin’s brother Cyrus, the Demon of Death sulking the halls of General Hospital and Turning Woods. Martin, more than anyone else, knows what Cyrus is capable of, yet he never once stopped to ask himself why Danny would accuse Cyrus of murdering Sam. Instead, Martin was outraged on Cyrus’ behalf and marched down to the police station to demand that Anna arrest Jason for threating to kill Cyrus.

When Anna actually arrested Jason, I was gobsmacked. She can arrest Jason on some weak charge but men like Jenz Sidwell and Cyrus Renault are free to wreak havoc and mayhem until she can build a case against them? She is utterly useless.

Third time’s a charm

There are some promising couples on GH this Valentine’s Day. Lucky and Liz are reconnecting, but danger lurks. Cyrus has Liz in his evil crosshairs because he seems to have deduced — based on little evidence — that she is the one who broke into his apartment. Apparently, he hasn’t taken the time to ask around to see if anyone — like the building’s super — saw someone enter his apartment.

It’s a race against time. Will Anna be able to build a case against Cyrus before he claims his next victim? I don’t have high hopes.

While I fully expect some harm to befall Liz before Cyrus is vanquished, I’m not too worried. It’s clear that the writers are investing in a reunion between Lucky and Liz. To be honest, while I’m okay with the writers going there, I feel they rushed things with Lucky’s deadbeat past. He hasn’t truly atoned for all the years that he’s been an absentee father. It’s been all about Liz and very little about Aiden.

Aiden deserves better than that, and so does Liz. She’s the one who was there for all the highs and lows, including Aiden’s heartbreak over losing Franco. Where was Lucky when Liz struggled to make ends meet and worked long hours with three young boys to raise? How about when Charlotte was bullying Aiden? The writers have given Lucky a free pass, and now they are poised to make him the hero who saves the damsel in distress. I’m sure it’s going to be exciting, but also predictable. Lucky’s honor will be restored and all will be right with his world.

Steve Burton as Jason and Sofia Mattsson as the seemingly always unlucky Sasha | PHOTO: Disney/Bahareh Ritter

Secret baby daddy

That brings me to Jason and Sasha. I’m sure no one was shocked when Sasha and Jason decided it would be best for everyone to believe that Jason is her baby daddy. I certainly wasn’t. In my last column I mentioned that Jason’s love language is playing baby daddy. He fell in love with Carly pretending to be Michael’s father, and he later fell in love with Sam while she was pregnant with Sonny’s child and living in Jason’s penthouse. By the time Sam had reached her third trimester, Sam and Jason were planning on raising Lila together and sharing custody with Sonny.

I’m pleased that Jason was honest with Danny about the baby, but I do think he made a huge mistake. The poor kid is grieving his mother, and his emotions are all over the place. This is a secret too big for him to keep.

Sasha and Jason are allies at the moment, but I suspect that they will be far more than that by next Valentine’s Day. The signs are there. She reminded Jason that he needs to put his son first by not avenging Sam’s murder because Danny would carry the guilt with him for the rest of his life. Sasha was right, and Jason knew it. I saw it all over his face, along with a glimmer of respect and admiration for Sasha. She will soon be the new Jason whisperer.

Alexa Havins as Lulu Spencer and Dominic Zamprogna as Dante Falconeri | (Disney/Bahareh Ritter)

The Valentine’s Day blues

Meanwhile, Dante is grieving Sam and is being frozen out of the investigation into her murder because he might jeopardize the case. I can’t fault Anna for telling Dante to take some time off. He has a lot going on in his life including the return of his ex-wife, Lulu.

Lulu recently admitted to Maxie that her feelings for Dante haven’t changed since the night of the explosion that put Lulu in a coma. To Lulu, only a few days had past, since that night four years earlier. I get that, and I respect Lulu for recognizing that her feelings need to stay on the backburner while Dante mourns the woman he loved and built a life with while Lulu was in a coma.

Initially, Lulu annoyed me, but the writers have corrected course, and I’m finally able to see some chemistry between Alexa Havins and Dominic Zamprogna. I’m not ready for romance, but I do see potential.

Natalia’s past rears his evil head

I don’t see potential between Sonny and Natalia, even with Natalia’s ex-husband Jenz Sidwell in the picture. Is Jenz the father of Natalia’s children? Don’t know, don’t care. Jenz is evil and Natalia is still a homophobe.

Giving Natalia a job at Deception and making her Sonny’s new confidante and cheerleader hasn’t done anything to address the damage the writers created when she spouted all those ignorant things during Blaze and Kristina’s relationship. Just because Natalia is friendly with Kristina doesn’t make it all better.

An unexpected switcheroo

Jack has a new face and whole different vibe from the Brennan that I loved and now dearly miss. The spark that Jack and Carly once shared is gone. I’m not sure that the writers can recapture it. I don’t blame Chris McKenna, but rather the choice to change Jack so drastically. All the things that I loved about Brennan — his easy charm, dry wit, those twinkling eyes, secret smiles, and that sexy Aussie accent — are gone.

I feel a bit like we are starting from square one, only this time there isn’t that natural easiness between the actors that I saw with Charles Mesure and Laura Wright. Watching Chris, I find myself wondering about what could have been with Charles. I know that’s not fair to Chris, but it’s how I feel.

To me, this Jack is a whole new character, and I have yet to take his measure. (Sorry, I couldn’t help myself)

General Hospital quick takes

I see what the writers are trying to do with Molly and Cody. I’m not liking it one bit. Cody might act like he’s twenty-something, but he’s pushing fifty much like his childhood best friend, Dante. Molly needs someone much younger — not a man-child. Also, did T.J. leave town? Where’s he at?

I can’t believe that Alexis told Danny about Sam without discussing it with Jason first. Worse, she told Danny not to tell Jason about Sam’s murder. What a horrible position to put her grandson in. It was also reckless to drop Danny off without altering an adult — like Dante — to what Danny was dealing with.

Folks, I’m trying so hard to like this new Emma, but she just rubs me the wrong way. This is not the little girl that I watched grow up. I know the writers are hoping to give her an edge, but they are going about it the wrong way. Instead, they are making her annoying.

Happy anniversary to Tony Geary and his husband Claudio Gama whom he married in 2020. Here’s to many more years of wedded bliss.
